Surprised neither Pulisic or Ziyech starting. Surely a better option than Havertz

Ed – yeah, it’s a toss up there!. I just think that Chilwell is arguably a little more consistent, but honestly I wouldn’t have an issue with Shaw ahead of Chilwell!

Disagree with you there on a few things, Foxy! I’d leave Ramsdale, White, Godfrey, Trippier, Ward-Prowse, Saka and Watkins behind. Trent offers something different to the other right backs, and for me, he just has to go…and bang in form right now. Henderson (Jordan) would go as well, as apparently he is a great leader in the camp and very game savvy. Bellingham would go in case Henderson breaks down as another defensive midfield cover, and Greenwood would go as an alternative to a bang out of form Rashford.

My starting line up would be

            Henderson

            Walker – Maguire – Stones – Chilwell

Rice – Henderson (if fit) (Philipps if not)

            Mount – Foden – Grealish

            Kane

Rashford, Sterling, Greenwood, Sancho, even Trent would be a bunch of great impact subs if we’re chasing a game. Philipps or Henderson, Coady subs to help close a game down.

Think you have to play the players who are in form, so I’m surprised you don’t have Mount in your starting line-up. Only Grealish in my front 4 line up has a question mark against him, having only just come back from injury

Sean…while yes, I agree it’s a miracle that we finished 3rd, if you look at it closely after 17 games we were top of the league, and for the last 10 games we were the form team in the league…it’s just those games between Game 18 and Game 28 where we were abjectly awful. For nearly 3/4 of the season we were the team in the best form! It is easy to think we were lucky to finish 3rd, and in some ways we were, but if our shit run had been more spread out like most teams were, no-one would have quibbled at third place. In all honety, I think what it shows more than anything is that there is one outstanding team in the league, and a number who are pretty average. United finishing 2nd is more a reflection on the rest of the league than it is on United. They really aren’t a great side at all as was shown by their home form, their performance on Wednesday and just how many times that they had to produce fightbacks to pick up points. And I’m not just having a go at United. We obviously were awful for nearly a third of the season (losing to Fulham, WBA etc), Chelsea really ought to have done alot better than they did with the money they spent, and don’t get me started on Spurs and Arsenal. It’s Leicester I really feel for, as they were the only team that actually out-performed their pre-season expectations!

Surprised no one has mentioned Schmeichels save from Mount near the end. Truly outstanding save! Indeed at the same level as the goal from Tielemans. 2 outstanding moments in what was a pretty drab 90 minutes in all honesty, but pleased for Leicester and Rodgers

In a season pretty much devoid of any fun for me and my team, and my fellow Liverpool fans, last night was refreshing to say the least!

But if I hear one more time how much United missed Maguire…! So they had their 2nd and 3rd choices starting. Liverpool had their 5th choice and at times this season 8th choice starting. Try being without Maguire, Lindelof and Bailly since October.

As far as I understand it, the 50+1 does not mean that the supporters have to invest 50% of the value of the club, as obviously that could never happen. But what it means is that supporters have a casting vote for want of a better phrase in the meaningful decisions that a club makes, at least those decisions that affect the supporter e.g price hikes, sponsorships. They don’t have a say in team matters, purchases or selections. They are more like custodians of the club, which is exactly what they should be, and that would prevent people like the Glazers building up these massive debts in their club. I don’t pretend to understand exactly how it works, but I promise you, it wouldn’t involve Man Utd fans having to find £2bn!!

I think the fans yesterday were well within their right to protest, and good on them for doing it. However, the stadium invasion and the violence and vandalism negated any good the protest may have done. The pictures of idiots in the goalmouth taking selfies, and using the banners over the seats as a giant slide just allows people to imagine that all of them were just lads ‘out on the lash’…because that’s what those pictures suggested. And when it gets to innocent passer-bys having their cars attacked and police being attacked it just adds fuel to the fire for those who wish to ignore the justifiable reasons for protest.

The trouble is that every club has it’s share of idiots, without exception, but unfortunately that is society, and we ain’t going to change that. But Sky’s hypocrisy in all this is also just breathtaking, not least Gary Neville. While I agreed with almost all he said the other week about the ESL and it killing the grassroots of English football, it did occur to me that didn’t he do much the same with his purchase of Salford and ignoring the plight of other local struggling clubs, like Bury and Bolton? And didn’t Sky do much the same in 1992 with their investment in the EPL, which really just resulted in the rich getting richer and the gap between the haves and the have-nots growing season by season. Their head in hands faux horror about the proposal was just protecting their own investment, as far as I could see.

Football this season has just been a horror shitshow (except maybe to City fans!) with no crowds, no atmosphere, ESL proposals, VAR decisions, and not least, my own team. The fun and release that football gives people has been sucked out of the game by oligarchs, faceless corporations, media moguls, law makers and, of course the pandemic.

What a deflating night that was! None of them could pas to a red shirt, misplacing simple balls, there was no energy, no aggression, no leadership. Not one of them can say they performed to anywhere near their optimum level, and frankly with the score being only 3-1, I feel we got away with it a bit. There will have to be a vast improvement for the 2nd leg, but as 9 says above, I can’t see Real not scoring themselves.

Allison recently has been playing like a bang average keeper when we know he’s not, Trent and Robbo are shadows of last season’s versions of themselves, Gini looked like his mind was already at the Nou Camp, Mane looks like the victim of having played far too much football over the last 2 years, Philipps looked like the lower Premiership/upper Championship player that really he is, and arguably, Naby Keita has played his last game for Liverpool as everyone’s patience must have run out by now.

                                A woefully depressing night!

9 – your lot still have to be favourites for 4th position…points on the board and all that, plus a healthy goal difference. It’s obviously a lot tighter now than it was Saturday morning, but I’d still have you doqwn as favourites. Think you’re just not wanting to jinx it! The bottom line is that there are cases to be made for everyone from Leicester down to Everton as to why they should make it and also why they may not. Everton and West Ham have no distarctions which will help them. It’s going to be exciting, and I’m just grateful our season hasn’t disappeared like it threatened to a few weeks ago. Have to say, I would happily sacrifice top 4 for a CL win, obviously, I suppose, but the thought of No 7 does excite me. So many echoes of 2005 as well. Istanbul as a venue, Chelsea (probably) in the semis, a crap domestic season. The stars are aligning!!

Very impressed with Arsenal yesterday. That Smith-Rowe is a player, isn’t he? Thought Odegaard did well also. But for me the highlight was Lamala’s goal. Now that is why we all love football! I could watch that over and over again!

Sean, you’re right about Jose. He’s got an array of attacking talent in that squad, arguably as good as anyone in the country, and yet he plays tactics like that. Man, you’d be pissed off if you were a Spurs fan, and then he has the nerve to blame Michael Oliver for the defeat. No, Jose, down to you, my old son! As it happens, it was never a penalty, and yet another example of how crap VAR is. Sort out controversial decisions? Yeah, right! I don’t have a problem with Oliver’s mistake in awarding it…mistakes happen, Suck it up! But stop the wasting of everyone’s time by getting VAR involved.

Sean…you just never know, mate! In 2005 we lost 14 games in the Premier League and somehow won the Champions League, and no-one would argue we’ve got a better team now than we had then. I agree it’s hugely unlikely, but get Porto in the next round, have City play Bayern and Chelsea play PSG, and you just never know. Stranger things have happened…like in 2005!

Nil – can I just say how refreshing it is to read one of your posts after a Liverpool defeat, and for it to be insightful, well written and sporting. Gone are the days of the Nil foul mouthed rants. Well done, sir, keep it up.

Perhaps I’ll have to take over and issue the foul mouthed rants! What the f*** is going on? I know there are injuries, but if everyone was fit, probably only VVD, Hendo and Gomez would have been different in tonight’s team. The issue for me is that we have a whole team playing so far below the level they have shown the last couple of years, and Jurgen appears unable to change it. How does the saying go? The definition of madness is when something doesn’t work, just keep trying the same thing over and over again. I would hope to see some radical changes for Fulham at the weekend, with Keita, Jota, Shaq, Millie and maybe even Tsimikas starting ahead of any of Trent, Robbo, Thiago, Gini, Sadio and Bobby. Partly because some of those players need a rest, and partly because they are so woefully out of form. Something needs to be changed and quick!

I don’t think that is ‘old school’, Brian…I think that is the thoughts of almost everybody who enjoys the pace of football and now understand the realisation that VAR causes as much controversy as the any mistakes the ref made in the past but with the added problem of ridiculous gaps in play.
