Chelsea Official Club statement from last night:

“As reported earlier this evening, Chelsea Football Club can confirm that it has begun the formal procedures for withdrawal from the group developing plans for a European Super League.
Having joined the group late last week, we have now had time to consider the matter fully and have decided that our continued participation in these plans would not be in the best interests of the Club, our supporters or the wider football community.”

Really pleased to see the end of this nonsense from a Chelsea perspective although it doesn’t absolve us from joining this ill conceived plan.

You do have to laugh Nine. “…now that we’ve had time to consider the matter fully…”. So they just went into it without thinking about it?! Embarrassing from all 6 clubs involved. Very pleasing to see fans of all these 6 clubs uniting in their disgust at these owners and their decisions. There are going to be some very shameful attempts at face-saving these coming days and the PR departments will be working overtime to win back the trust of the supporters.

Ed, if city and Chelsea were approached last week and told this was going ahead with or without them they may have rushed to agree through fear of being left behind

It may have only been the public reaction that gave them courage to back out

However I don’t believe that and the problem with us all being in the dark here is that it leads to endless conjecture and conspiracy theories

That this could be agreed at all without consulting fans is a disgrace that should never be forgotten and we need to take action to ensure this can never happen again

I don’t believe it either Lucky. If Bayern, PSG and co had the courage to not get involved, they’re the only clubs to come out of this smelling of roses. If clubs really cared about the fans like they’re now claiming to, they’d have consulted them ahead of getting involved. Anything else is a feeble and shameful attempt at saving face.

One thing gone under the radar because of this , is the ridiculous revamp of the cl in 2024. More games , more teams abd more boring games. Last 16 is were it got very exciting and what a ridiculous format it’s going to be

UEFA came out fighting this week but they are still changing the game for more money. The hypocrisy of it all is astounding

Lucky…I am also looking for the benifits out of this….at least FiFa and UeFa will have had a shock to the system let alone our own inept FA, it MAY just get them thinking and ACTING better in the future so the situation does not arise. I am not too hopeful that it will not but at least something will be done, again…hopefully

Sean…you are right…I do not see how UEFA or Fifa can claim any victory out of this, What they propose is nothing short of a nightmare and a club will need more than 25 players to cope with ALL the fixtures. No winners in this, least of all the fans who will be paying more money to keep them employed

The traditional pre-season format where a Top Flight ‘Elite’ team would be mixing with teams from the lower leagues was taken away effectively.

Mini tournaments were already designed and football played in different parts of the world. Was that not already enough for these money grabbers?

One other potentially good thing to come out of this is that many of the ‘dirty half-dozen’ cronies who sat on the European Club Association board had resigned to take up positions on the board of the ESL, hopefully that means new members from less self interested clubs will rise to positions where they can influence the association for the better.
