21st February 2018 at 7:14 pm in reply to: Champions League: "It's a Knockout" Stage (Goonies need not apply) #16197Thoughts from last night from Nil:
“I honestly thought Chelsea gave a good account of themselves and did actually have them down to beat Barca in my acca at 11/5, if not covered with a draw, at exact odds, 11/5. I honestly can’t fathom the how Willian’s efforts have been dismissed the way they have. Surely if you’re a Striker or an attacking player, there will be times where your attempts are either foiled by the keeper, completely wide off the mark or striking the woodwork. If anything, those attempts were on the back of genuine poise of pressure from the home side.
There’s one thing I’ve picked up from recent years is that Barca simply are not what they used to be to me, Chelsea stood up them even though they did implement spells of play where they knew they really had to be disciplined keeping it tight at the back. There is nothing negative about that at all and if anything, I would praise that approach of play.
The tie is well and truly alive and the Blues should go into Spain with the belief that they can edge past.”

Then #1 tomorrow for Banjo. I can only imagine his joy if all three lose! He needs cheering up, bless him, after the Rochdale debacle ?

Fair points Pagan
I see the Rochdale manager has said almost exactly the same re Alli (& if he did it for England):

I think it’s important to distinguish between making the most of a challenge and diving or blatantly attempting to con the ref, which is the bracket I’d put your Cahill example in. I’m not going to condone the latter but, as I said, I wouldn’t have too much to say if Alli, as an England player, exaggerated a fall at a vital moment.

Oh I’m not a fan of diving at all Pagan. I suppose I’m just making the wider point that we’re all happy to accept a bit of exaggeration if it’s our own team benefitting. Ideally, I’d like to see it wiped out altogether, and I know comments like mine don’t help, but I would be lying if I said I’d be annoyed if Alli exaggerated a fall in the last minute of the World Cup final for England to get a pen.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t actually seen it yet so I can’t comment!
But it sounds from the above comments that he might have made the most of it. One thing’s for sure, I certainly won’t complain if he gets away with it at the World Cup for England!

This was the only clip I could find

My point being that both those managers have the luxury of not being expected to win every single game. At one of the money clubs every game is like this one where there is no excuse to not win

Matches like this are why I’m yet to be convinced that Poch could cut it at one of the money clubs. This match and the Newport one they should be absolutely walking it. I’ve said it before but I wonder with Poch whether he’s one of those managers who are great when they’re the underdog, but as soon as there is an expectation to win, they seem to struggle. Klopp is another one I’d accuse of that. Give them an away game at Real and they’d have you glued to the TV pulling off an upset but give them a cup final over a Rochdale and they crumble

All credit to Huddersfield for an energetic display. They’ve pressed Utd really well. Good to see McTominay get some more minutes. Like the look of him

Bizarre to chalk that first one off. The lines used in the VAR looked like they’d been drawn by a kid and were way off. 2-0 would have flattered us, to say the least, but still very strange decision. Need a stronger second half

Congrats to the Pool fans. I’ve said it before, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if this Liverpool side won the CL as they seem to be much more effective against the bigger sides. Really feels like one of the PL teams could do it this season

Message from Nil:
“My thoughts
That has to be the best away performance ever from the Reds on a European night – so how many away goals would Porto need themselves haha ;-)”

14th February 2018 at 6:19 am in reply to: Champions League: "It's a Knockout" Stage (Goonies need not apply) #15592Really impressive from both Spurs and City. You wouldn’t bet against a PL side winning the whole thing this season would you? As Makaveli says, you get to the quarters and any of them could win it.

To be honest, I’ve no problem with Nil coming back. Maybe I was on this occasion a bit hasty in banning him, I’m not sure. I generally try to gauge the feeling of the other posters before acting and it seemed as though Nil was rubbing a few people up the wrong way.
As I’ve always said, I’d only ever permanently ban Nil if I felt that was what the majority of posters felt was fair. Both Nine and Nil know I’ve even kept other posters away from the forum for fear of them clashing with Nil which I’d obviously prefer to not have to do.
Maybe something along the lines of what Nine suggests is the best way to go, a curfew of sorts! Unfortunately, I can’t set anything up to block anybody posting after certain times but I’m all for trying it

Is Pep safe I wonder? He’s lost a game now!
As for Jose, I disagree slightly. Utd not getting CL again is just not acceptable with the money spent. Unless they somehow pull a rabbit out of the hat and win the CL, I think he could be gone. He’s done it with worse squads! (twice!). If Utd won nothing and finished outside the top 4, he’d be gone, and rightly so. Utd aren’t Arsenal and just won’t accept no trophies.
