Don’t think Carrick’s any choice tbh. We can’t get rid of the cunt so he stays I guess. As for the midfield, if he plays 4-2-3-1, it’ll be Sesko as the 1, Bruno, Cunha, Mbeumo and Amad vying for the 3, and Mainoo, Tielemans, Santos and another for the 2. If you’ve got Bruno dictating play, you need two mobile , physical midfielders behind him. That rules Mainoo out for me but my guess is that Carrick will want to start him.

As for Madrid buying Rodri, let’s say he does end up going, which is a big if, I can only see disaster. Jose hasn’t been a special manager for donkey’s years and won’t be playing the type of football the fans will accept. Who would you bring as our DM? I know you liked Scott but isn’t he more a box-to-box? I don’t see a good solution so I’m interested in your take on that

Personally I think Rodri’s overhyped and over the hill bob as I think you know. I thought Ruiz ran Spain’s midfield in the WC, the commentators saw it differently.
I’d play two DMs who are also technically good and can play football. But primarily, they need to be quick, powerful and athletic. Baleba from 2 years ago would have been good. He looks the part but appears to have turned to shite. I like Scott but you’re right, he’s more box-to-box or playmaker. I definitely favour two monsters protecting the back four but who can also get forward. Still leaves you with an attacking front four. And boy, does our back four need protection. Trouble is, we’ve already bought Santos and Tielemans and I don’t see either as being in my midfield two.

Tchouameni for 68m is still decent business and yeah i agree with @jm about Baleba of 2years ago but Brighton messed up on that. Also agree about Rodri being overhyped and him winning the golden ball was absolute bollocks.
Carrick has been singing the praises of the PSG midfield trio and how they easily interchange position, short and long passes. If that’s what he wants to replicate at Man Utd then he should consider Bruno is never suited to a possession based game.

No happy, must have missed it mate. We cannot afford to have him as one of a two behind Bruno. He’s slow, not physical enough and a bit of a sideways passer in the main. Me, Amorim and Tuchel just aren’t sure what his pluses are.

Well Amorim was playing Casemiro and Bruno in central midfield and getting over run each week, or so i was told. Carrick came in and brough Mainoo in next to Casemiro and we immediately had more control, Casemiro improved and Mainoo looked very classy on the ball. As for Tuchel, he got a lot of things wrong this summer and 1 of them was not playing Mainoo when he wanted to get hold of the ball – i think most pundits agreed with that.
Anyway we’ve got options now with Tielemans and if we bring in another midfielder we’re much better stocked there than we were last season aren’t we?There must be something in the Tchouaméni rumours? Obviously we are waiting to see if there’s a deal to be done with him before moving onto the likes of Sandra!

Fuck me happy, it wouldn’t take much to have more control than Bruno and Casemiro had. It’s back to square one now for Carrick mate, the honeymoon period is over and no one cares about last season. Let’s see what he does with the midfield should we. Mainoo, Santos and Tielemans just doesn’t do it for me and Tchouameni looked average as fuck in the WC, so I wouldn’t be going there. I’m now hearing that Arsenal and the scousers are being linked with Vini Jnr, now that’s anmbition. City, Spurs and Chelsea all going big. I’m afraid we’re about to be left behind with a mid table squad mate.

Winning the midfield is more about fitness and tactics then about the personnel: yes, having better skilled players helps, but if you have a midfield that can run box-to-box all day and have the tactics that allow support from defence / attack to support the midfield and outnumber the opposition, then you’re in a much better place. The problem with United down the years is that we have simply run much less kilometres overall than the opposition and, under tactics like Amorim, our midfield was constantly outnumbered too.
Just need to get the team in impeccable fitness before the season starts and work out a proper 4-3-3 tactic where the 3 in the middle are never outnumbered.

Agree to an extent Sympathy. Either way, we just don’t seem to be targeting those energetic, physical beasts. We need at least two and so far we have none. Every fucker knew we needed work rate and energy in that midfield, well everyone bar Wilcox it seems.

Happy, I was looking forward to this window. We have champions league football and should be able to attract better players. We have signed a back up player and another we didn’t want to get for free a few years back. I was expecting a statement signing but it looks like were skint.

Reading between the lines from reputable journos here in Spain and Tchouameni is not happening. Seems nailed on he’s signing a new deal and Madrid want him and Rodri in the midfield. They’ve been flogging squad players and seems Camavinga can also leave for the right coin. No idea what we are waiting on to get more players over the line. All seems money driven to me. If we cant get players in cheap and on moderate wages then we won’t be doing the deal. Looks like they’ve decided to pinch pennies this window. They’ll probably be happy with CL football again next year. Also not surprised they are doing it with Carrick as couldn’t see any other top manager accepting this type of window.

If this window carries on like this, there’s no chance of top four mate. In fact, even if we get another run of the mill midfielder, a cheap left back and maybe someone like Watkins (rumoured) as a back up striker, which is about the best we can hope for, we still won’t finish top four.
