I’ve no issues with us spending big bucks happy, but not on a guy that’s nearly 27 and didn’t really set the North East on fire or a twice relegated 21 year old who couldn’t make the Portugal squad. Neither 115 million on a guy who runs around a lot. Problem is, those ridiculous fees are the reason that the likes of Santos now cost 50 million rather than the 30 million or so they should cost. And I didn’t have Santos in mind when I referenced cheaper options.

I think you’re right killy, the Chelsea fans seemed to have rated Santos and the reason he didn’t get many minutes is, as Dee said, no chance of getting into a middle three when it’s currently made up of Enzo, Caicedo and Palmer. Not an obvious pick for me but let’s hope he works out.

My first thought when I think of the business done so far is “That’s us 10th or thereabouts next season”, such is the underwhelming feeling I have towards the transfers done so far. My second thoughts then was “well, we’ve spent big on superstar names and they’ve failed miserably” and that last years window worked a treat in the end, even though we all gave a collective sigh when United signed Lammens instead of Donarumma. So maybe it’s a case of INEOS and co. taking a different approach which might still come good? With United you simply don’t know how well or badly the team will perform until a couple of games into the season. With that said, I reaaaaally hope we get a decent left winger who can get fans off their seats; Barcola would be an amazing signing if rumours are true that he might not stick around at PSG. Him and Zaire-Emery (another one feeling left in the cold overall) would be a HUGE statement of intent.

I do hope they sign a left Back because Dorgu should not be wasted at LB; but watching Mazraoui play LB for Morocco boggles the mind why we can’t get even 40% of that output from him at club level.
In the case of not signing either Fernandes or Tonali i think the club made the right call because Newcastle have used the Tonali money to sign hungry young midfielders.

Blacky – No, we wouldn’t have asked them to insert a sell on clause in the deal you silly helmet! But as part of a negotiating tactic we might have got the price lowered with the inclusion of the clause. All i was suggesting is that perhaps the club are now signing players with the view to doing what City, Liverpool and Chelsea are doing when selling them which is not having their pants pulled down.
But that’s fine you carry on looking at every possible negative outcome you can find.
