Interesting observation today from a UTD fan on a different forum:
“When you take out the odd good game then there’s not much left. We’re going in to the summer with no established back four, needing major reinforcements in midfield and question marks over most of the attacking players. People can clutch at as many straws as they like. We simply are a long way off City. And instead of the manager improving it, he seems to be making it worse with his comments and attitude.

We have one potentially top centre half who just missed 75% of the season through injury. The less said about the other centre half’s the better. Our star midfielder looks like he is playing with his shoe laces tied together at times and could be gone in the summer. The other mainstay in there is no spring chicken. The star forward and highest paid player in English football is totally out of form and looks nowhere near rediscovering it. Our two young potential world class forwards cant get a game and are at odds with the manager.”

Mourinho took full credit for a title win, within 1 transfer window of inheriting Chelsea’s squad from Benitez. Unlike selective memories he was sacked after “losing the dressing room,” before the following Christmas!!!
So why if money doesn’t really matter to the success of your greatest manager of this generation, after 4 transfer windows and £300mill NET of Mourinho, surely he should need a modest spend to go to the next stage of PL & CL, if he’s this marvellous a manager. Or atleast tell me the spine of his team next season?? Starting with the goal keeper….
      I can tell you Ross County’s: Fox · Routis · Souttar · Fontaine · Fraser · Draper · Lindsay · McKay

I like you look forward to the next few years of watching Chelsea and Man U demonstrate their financial propriety whilst trophies role in, due to sensible management.
It’s weird UEFA had to explore control of certain big teams buying most of Europe’s youth talent and farming them out in huge numbers across Europe…
I just can’t recollect which teams were implicated can you? Or who was managing those teams?? 🙂
I’m happy to wax lyrical about Ross County and their role in bringing regional youth upto Premiership standard. Great club, run responsibly on a shoe string and competed like Caley Thistle with the financial dominant. 🙂

          Ross County’s my team thanks.
It’s a bold statement you make about financial security 9 99. Let’s see how things work out over the next decade as financial constraints are applied more effectively to clubs and the last decade of big spenders are given greater competition. The Chelsea Mourinho benefitted 11 years ago (2007,) how’s that looking for next season without another massive NET spend? If as you say, these superb Mourinho foundations were laid a decade ago???
I think the best young talent from Stamford Bridge in the last 5 years, is currently playing for City, Liverpool and Man U?

The reality check is the Mourinho smoke-screen of second place by 1 or 4 points is hiding the rapid erosion of wage structure, homegrown talent and values at Man U. It’s very difficult to put that right after someone has chosen that route to “success.”

Not difficult to trickle feed after you’ve bought your team

99 9 Exactly, you confirm my point about Mourinho. Despite throwing money at UTD in 4 transfer windows, he was no where near winning the league!
Klopp’s net spend is £5 mill across those windows (like Poch) so your point about buying VVD is?

I’m primarily a lover of this beautiful game. If you read the points made above then will then as evidence of Mourinho’s managerial acumen, does he leave clubs with a solid platform for future success and a healthy youth structure feeding the first team? Financially, stable clubs with sensible wage structures who if Arab/Russian Oligarchs get bored and sell, can continue equally successfully? Or does he blow crazy money in a couple of seasons and turn players and hierarchy against him and display the traits we tech our children not to..
History is full of Busby, Shankly, Paisley, Raniere, Conte, Guardiola etc etc who don’t behave appallingly and were/are winners.
There’s a reason patience is thin with Mourinho and the parting from Utd will be eye watering and probably his last top top team…

As an aside. Since Klopp has introduced VVD and settled with Robertson at left back (£8 mill) Alex Arnold right back (youth squad) and Karius (£4.7 mill) and sold Coutinho for £142 mill, Liverpool have gained the same points as City with a GD of 22 vs City’s GD18. So when you talk of a 20 point gap between LFC and City, that was LFC with Mignolet, Moreno and Matip.
Next season is going to be a lot more competitive now a lot of teams have the spending power that Chelsea had over everyone when Mourinho won/bought his titles at Chelsea…
As has been demonstrated from Blackburn onwards, if you have the spending power, you can buy a top class squad of 22 players and vastly increase your probability of winning the league.. The top Cup competitions, test managerial nouse..

The reality check on Mourinho is thus:
Since Week 24 and the close of his forth transfer window £300 million Net spend and inheriting some good players (and acquiring a proven World class striker,) Utd have gained 18 pts and improved their GD by 4 goals. Burnley have 17 pts and GD 5 and Newcastle have 20 pts and GD 6. If Sean Dyche or Rafa Benitez had access to £300 mill Net in 2 seasons, you can’t convince me Utd wouldn’t be playing with more style, cohesion or success!
The 2 trophies you parade as evidence of his tactical ability were the Europa by beating St Etienne, FC Rostov, Anderlecht, Celta Vigo and Ajax. How are any of these teams performing this season? Probably the weekest Europa competition in years.
His run to win the EPL cup from the last 16 was West Ham, Hull and Southampton. How are those teams doing?? A competition most managers play 2nd team & youth players in…
Hardley evidence of managerial genius even without having a massive expensive squad..
His biggest crime at Chelsea and Man U is narcissism and need for immediate gratification. He refuses to patently bring through talent and sells promising players who need coaching. He buys expensive talent and loses patience immediately if they don’t perform. In doing so he has raised UTD’s wage structure to eye watering levels that attracts mercenaries, greed and lack of the right values in players and fans..
Pochettino and Klopp have patiently built great first 11 teams and a depth of youth coming through on minimal Net spend and the supporters are loving it! Despite not having a Europa cup or EPL to parade…
Klopp, Pochettino, Dyche and Benitez are far superior managers to Mourinho and none Utd fans watch with great amusement.
Pep has a great idea of how his team play and win. But I want to see if he can do it away from the spending power of UTD,City,PSG,Chelsea, B Munich, Barcelona or Real M. I’m not convinced the above managers couldn’t win with those teams and that money..
