Two interesting posts from our old friend Alfie on Teamtalk who makes some good points imo.
“Isn’t this instead of the Champions League? Teams will still play in their domestic leagues.
The closed competition is not sport, but this is the first iteration. They have set up a rival organisation to run a European competition, so if more clubs join them they may enhance the competition to have other teams in it. The initial league will be 15 regular teams and five new teams each year. They may enhance that to have two comps etc.
UEFA are just upset as it takes money away from them.
Not sure why the PM is upset, or the PL. Clubs still want to play in domestic leagues. I think a lot of falsehoods have been spread so far and the devil will be in the detail, are are yet to be announced.”

“The games are spread out, midweek, throughout the season.Initial proposal are two leagues of 10 teams, play home and away, top three go through, next two from each league play off for a place in the Qtr’s. Then two legged knock outs until the final which is the only weekend fixture.
Had UEFA announced this as a shake up to the existing CL format I cannot see such a fuss being made.
The ‘closed comp’ is silly, and teams need a clear path to qualify for it. Unfortunately due to politics in european football you can’t be a member of this and the ECA (ECA clubs play in Europa and Champions League), so it’s a closed shop initially by default.
It’s clearly come from greed, but so did expanding the CL and the breakaway PL.
I think more details are required.”

Im here in hospital waiting for more tests then hopefully heart valve surgery. Be in here for weeks yet.
Disgusted with the clubs doing this. This American approach is of no interest. City must pull out of it. They must.
What has caused all this imo is covid and huge losses of revenue. The likes of the debt of some of those clubs is the cause. So far I havent heard of one voice in favour.

Adlab, great to hear from you buddie but you’ve got to try and forget all this which is quite emotional for us all just concentrate on getting better.

Speaking about the proposal for the European Super League, Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said: “I cannot stress more strongly how everyone is united against this disgraceful, self-serving proposals, fuelled by greed above all else.
“We are all united against this nonsense of a project. Cynical plan, completely against what football should be. We cannot and will not allow that to change.
“Players who will play in the teams that might play in the closed league will be banned from the World Cup and Euros.
“We urge everyone to stand tall with us as we do everything in our power to ensure this never ends up in fruition.”
This could all get very ugly. Here’s hoping the Euros aren’t ruined by all this amongst lots of other things.

Surrey Blue…good post. I hate the thought of it but it has been coming for the last2/3 years and the ineptness of the various FA’s have done nothing to fend it off except for some useless threats. I think the English league system will survive, properly managed and although I wi; always be a City fan in my heart I would not hesitate to watch Blackburn/Bolton.Rochdale as a football fan. I am not interested in City v Real Madrid etc in league format
As somebody has already said…the new Group are looking at the next generation of fans not the historical ones……thats OK with me….I just move on as well._____________________________

New Format for the CL announced.
Taking the total number of teams from 32 to 36 in the UEFA Champions League, the biggest change will see a transformation from the traditional group stage to a single league stage including all participating teams. Every club will now be guaranteed a minimum of 10 league stage games against 10 different opponents (five home games, five away) rather than the previous six matches against three teams, played on a home and away basis.
The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the knockout stage, while the teams finishing in ninth to 24th place will compete in a two-legged play-off to secure their path to the last 16 of the competition.
Similar format changes will also be applied to the UEFA Europa League (8 matches in the league stage) and UEFA Europa Conference League (6 matches in the league stage). Subject to further discussions and agreements, these two competitions may also be expanded to a total of 36 teams each in the league stage.
Qualification for the UEFA Champions League will continue to be open and earned through a team’s performance in domestic competitions.
One of the additional places will go to the club ranked third in the championship of the association in fifth position in the UEFA national association ranking. Another will be awarded to a domestic champion by extending from four to five the number of clubs qualifying via the so-called “Champions Path”.
The final two places will go to the clubs with the highest club coefficient over the last five years that have not qualified for the Champions League group stage but have qualified either for the Champions League qualification phase, the Europa League or the Europa Conference League.
All games before the final will still be played midweek, recognising the importance of the domestic calendar of games across Europe.
