I really feel sorry for Iraola having to deal with this mess.

We finished last season with a flawed squad.

The totality of this summers business amount to 2 permanent transfers and 1 loan.

We now play 5 games in 17 days, moving into a period of playing 3 games a week.

He really does have his work cut out for him.

          My summary:

Gk. I don’t rate him but happy Marmadashvili wasn’t sold as Ali will get injured at some point.

LB: I still have hope Kerkez thrives under Iraola. Tsimikas an OK back up, wish there was a HG option instead

CB: fairly happy now. My only doubt is VvD successor but maybe he’s injured so not worth buying yet?

RB: shambles. Frimpong was never a RB and Bradley is made of pringles and subsequently I fear will never reach the level.

CM: we have the numbers but not the profiles. All are forward thinking. Our best is Szoboszlai and I don’t think he fits the two man midfield. Needed a more defensive minded player and drop one or two of the big 3 earners.

          Lw: now 4 seniors why?

RW: none existent. Not a single player can say its their natural position.

AM: wirtz doesn’t have an understudy with his skillset but we have people who can play there albeit with a different style.

CF: Isak continues the Pringles vibe but it would have been crazy to buy effectively a 3rd choice striker. Hopefully Danns can recover and get some minutes in a cup, or we reply on one of our 1000 left wingers to play out of position.

Back ups: High wage and low minutes players taking up non HG spots should have been moved on.

          Overall, bit of a shambles.

Sean we have a number of wingers that can play the right position and the problem with the team is not scoring goals, its not the forward line, it´s the defending that has let us down so far this season. We have one of the most stacked forward lines in Europe right now! The only issue with the forward line is that we lack a left footed player, that´s it, we do not lack forwards. This issue you lads are making into a big deal is essentially the same issue we had when Salah arrived and we had to move Mane to the left. There is not a single forward in our lineup that will refuse game time on the right! Then having a right footed player on the right wing is not a new thing, it´s been done since the game started.

You’re missing the point Bingo. How much game experience do these lads have playing on the right? It’s essentially a completely different role you’re asking them to do, and maybe they have experience or maybe not.

Threeps >> perfect summary of our disappointing transfer window and the reasons why it ultimately had to be so disappointing. I think the fact that we were by far the biggest net-spenders is the whammy that makes it such a double-whammy!

Obviously, time (i.e. results) will tell whether it was a good window or not – and I include Iraola as part of the transfer window – but general expectations around the club aren’t great at the moment. Recent seasons though have proved that early season expectations aren’t a great barometer of what actually happens. 2 seasons ago, Klopp gone and with a bit of an underwhelming name of a new Manager in place, Chiesa as our most significant signing and we went and won the league. Last season, PL Champions, huge investment in the squad and we were fairly dire most of the season. So, let’s give things a chance before we totally write 26/27 off.

What’s all this ridiculous moaning about no right wingers? I rarely agree with Notorious, but he’s right, we do have right wingers.

We actually have 3 players who can play at right wing, and have already played there this season i.e. Rio, Muñoz and Gakpo.

Thus leaving the left wing solely for our star signing Barcola.

PSG are the best club side in the world, winning two CL’s in a row, and they DON’T have a left-footed right winger, both Doué and Kvaratshkelia are right-footed, while Dembele is their No. 9.

Just let Iraola get on with the job, he has all the wingers he needs for now.

Need to free a non HG spot first before we can buy Camara, probably why we didn’t make a move this window.

Pretty sure discussing the winger situation on a forum isn’t stopping Iraola from doing his job.

I cannot comment on Munoz as not seen enough of him but if we have to rely on Rio or Gakpo to play on right then we are truly screwed.

Songman >> I totally agree that the inverted/opposite winger philosophy is only a current trend and by no means the only way to set-up your attacking options. I thought Gakpo looked fine on the right against Forest and played a perfect right-footed ball for an Isak tap-in at the far post. He probably wouldn’t have produced such pin-point accuracy if he’d tried that on his left foot from the opposite flank. All Gakpo does from the left side is a telegraphed cut-inside where all teams know exactly what he’s attempting and, more times than not, can easily counter it. Yes, Salah (left-footed on right flank) was optimal for us as a.) he had Trent overlapping and providing dangerous right-foot crosses and b.) he had the guile and skills such that his end result wasn’t so telegraphed and the defenders still had to cover all options. Basically, it’s horses for courses and vary your set-up according to the skillsets of the players available.

Correct RedHerring, Iraola just has to make the best out of the right-wingers we have, and I believe they can all do a job there.

Makes me think in instances of Manager movement from one club to another within the Prem, they can influence transfers. For instance: Glasner on Munoz, now at Forest, and Maresca on Enzo at Man City.

Does make me wonder Iraola not being able to influence the board to bring Alex Scott. I like him and reminds me of a Henderson type of player. We could have shelled 100 million and he’d have been one for the future should we decide to move on Mac Allister.

I think the point most people are making is that the unbalanced squad is of our own making. Hughes’ job over the past couple of years has been to replace and replenish the squad – he’s done half a job at best.

I think the thing some people seem to be missing is that we are short NOW. Bradley and Ekitike are out long term. Leoni is a youngster who is coming back from a bad injury and Gomez never stays fit for more than a couple of games.

So having already had full knowledge of the above, how will we cope if we get another couple of injuries to key players? The answer is, compared to our rivals, very poorly.

He wasn’t provided with right wingers.
He has left wingers that he now has to play out of position.

There’s a reason why we were interested in the likes of Mbaye and Minteh etc.
                                  They’re right wingers.

Sarr’s manager making the failed move down to the fact that his client is African. Oh do fuck off.

Hasn’t stopped countless numbers of African heritaged players successfully moving over the years has it (Mane, Mbuemo, Ndiaye, Semenyo, Salah, Drogba, Song, Wenger had half of Africa in his team at one point).

He’s only irked because he missed on an agent fee.

The thing is also you lads are focusing on how we played under Klopp right now, with three forwards, when we are attacking with 4 players now. When we play with 4 forwards we do no need both wingers to be cutting inside as there is not the same space available as in the 433 formation under Klopp. It makes more sense to have one winger who can hug the line and deliver that pin point cross to the three other forwards that are all cutting in from the left flank. We do not need another player cutting inside.
