At least Klopp is trying to change it. Personally I would look at bringing on Ox – as I’ve said numerous times, we lack goals and creativity in midfield which is exemplified in games like this. Matip the only one who has actually driven at the opposition.

Depends how ambitious Poch is. If he wants to challenge for regular titles and take the next step up, Levy either needs to support him or Poch needs to leave. Or he might be happy what he’s doing on the salary he’s on. He’s at a crucial junction.

Man Utd, Arsenal, and Spurs are all like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.

Been quite impressed with Kelleher tonight. Very assured from a young lad.

Adlab, not sure, perhaps it’s because the keeper merely diverted it into the goal from the original strike, albeit in a slightly delayed way.

We’ve gradually got better as the games gone on. Not a surprise after all the changes and new debutants. Messy goal but we deserve to be at least 1 up.

24th September 2019 at 5:59 pm in reply to: Isn't it time that we stopped supporting terrible companies? #48330To give some numbers on it, 10 of the 20 premier league teams have betting companies as their main shirt sponsor. In the Championship, that’s the case for 17 of the 24 teams.
Via…
10 of 20 PL clubs in 2019-20 will have gambling companies as their main shirt sponsors (up from 9 last season). In the Championship it will be 17 of 24 in 2019-20 (same as last season).

Klopp may be used as the exception to the rule as defensively Liverpool were still suspect for quite a large part of his earlier time at the club. But he still got the team to 2 finals in his first season, and because of his charisma, had real authority in the dressing room. I think he also took a bit of time adjusting to the physicality of the premier league.
My main concern with Lampard is that whilst there is enthusiasm there, there needs to be something deeper there so that the players can maintain their motivation in the longer term, or else, it will just fizzle out. In any good relationship, both sides need to use each other to the same extent. I just worry the club is using Lampard for more a temporary phase and Lampard felt he couldn’t turn the opportunity down. And so he feels he has the license to be bold without consequences and blood the youth because that’s the remit he’s been given by the club. The problem is in that case is that he is acting like a temporary manager. As I say, unless there is something deeper there, this isn’t going to last and Roman certainly isn’t going to trust him with £200 mill next summer.

If there is a talk of disrespect, surely it’s the fact that Messi included Ronaldo in his votes but Ronaldo didn’t included Messi in his.

The bottom line now is that the bar is so high (or absolute rather) with offsides that being level is still effectively offside because the attacker needs only to be so fractionally over the line like Son that he is still penalised. So all we’ve done is as previously we gave the benefit of the doubt to the attacker we’re now giving the defender the advantage – and as Sean questions – I’m sure that’s why Liverpool are now playing this higher lane because they know now they’ll almost always win the calls.
So this will result in fewer goals being scored. Also there may now be a premium on extremely quick attackers who will still be able to beat the offside trap in this new format.
As for this phase of play talk, doesn’t this just prove Pagan’s point that whilst on the outset VAR is claiming only to interfere as lightly as possible with this “clear and obvious” tag, in reality it’s creating this minefield of when a second phase begins to judge on whether an advantage has been unfairly gained and it’s use will eventually be widespread, e.g. you could also argue that even if a goal wasn’t scored from the initial offside, the attacking team has still been able to unfairly pressure the other team which could contribute to them conceding later in the game. Where does one draw the line in such things? The answer is that *all* offsides will probably have to be eventually penalised. This is the Pandora’s box that is VAR. Once you’ve opened it, be prepared for the consequences.

Mak, Ed was talking about moving Woodward back into his old job and that’s what I was responding to – that that would be demoting him which is never ideal. As I say, I suspect he’ll leave the club anyway.
As for Klopp, yes it’s a good point that he’s had significant help with signings, but as I say I don’t think Utd ever bought into Mourinho’s philosophy and both the recruitment team and manager have to some extent sing from the same hymn sheet. Instead they tried to hold onto their attacking identity by throwing big bucks at “exciting” players like Pogba and Sanchez and instructed Mourinho to buy into that rather than the other way around.

Problem is Ed, you would effectively have to demote Woodward and that’s never ideal in a business environment and going back into your old job is never quite the same as it was. I suspect he’ll leave completely when it comes to it.
As for the future direction of the club, let’s be honest, whilst money will always play a key role, it’s still ultimately a top manager that gets a club moving because only he can give them that identity and make them feel special so the players can buy into the managers philosophy. Mourinho gets a lot of criticism but he arguably played a key role in setting up Chelsea to the stature they now have – take him out of Chelsea’s history and for all of Roman’s money, I just don’t think they’d be the same club as they are now and the players he bought in set the legacy of the club and made it easier for future managers. Much as Guardiola has done for City. Yet Ferguson didn’t leave Man Utd in a particularly good shape did he? But to be fair he rebuilt several generations of successful teams and 27 years is obviously incredible service so you can’t really have a go at him for the way Utd were left at the end of his reign. So Man Utd needed a new charismatic manager and identity to replace him when he left so that a new chapter could be set in motion. The best they’ve had since is Mourinho yet they didn’t seem to trust him because they were hellbent on keeping their historic identity instead of Mourinho’s identity. Well, that’s not got them far has it?

Liverpool still struggling to assert themselves in big away games. Where is the pressing? Where is the desire we see at home? Does Klopp just overcompensate in being a bit more cautious?
Also Salah has been awful today.

Just looking somewhat leggy Mak. Opting for the lazy easy option of just wafting the ball up top.
