Well Utd have hugely underperformed vs the money spent over recent years. That’s going to hit them to some degree. But I think they still have some of the highest revenues vs other clubs. And they are still one of the biggest clubs in the world. I struggle to see them not competing for a player they want.

Maresca has had a good start. But I’m not as overly impressed by them as some. I don’t think they’re good enough defensively, granted it’s early days. Big test comes in what he wins. As for cost cutting, Utd still spent £180 mill on players over summer. We’ve spent a fraction of that.

I still think there’s a discrepancy between Utd’s goal of bringing in a manager to develop youngsters like they did when targeting Moyes, Solksjaer & Ten Hag vs the reality & ability of being able to spend big on big players. I just think you need a big name to manage a club with that spending ability and the expectations that brings. Chelsea have tried a raft of managers to develop young players from Lampard to Potter to Pochettino. And look how that’s gone. Look how Moyes, Solksjaer & Ten Hag went. A big name like Tuchel was the last Chelsea manager to win a European trophy, a much bigger achievement than a domestic cup. Just like Mourinho was the last Man Utd manager to win a European trophy. Yes its rumoured City were looking at Amorim, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they would have appointed him. And if he would have been it may have been more like a transitional appointment.
Tuchel was available. But now England have appointed him. Hansi Flick was available. But now flying high with Barca. I’m not saying Amorim would be a disaster if appointed. I just think working at a club with limited spending power vs a club with much bigger spending power is very different. It’s a different environment and culture. I’d also compare Emery at Arsenal & Emery at Villa.

To an extent Ed, but the whole thing I think is still a bit of a mess. They give Ten Hag a contract extension, fork out £180 mil on transfers which have to follow a certain type of play that Ten Hag would have had to at least been comfortable with. And then they sack him 9 games in and are looking to appoint a manager who as Threeps has said is rumoured to like having transfer control. Why not get Amorim in straight away? Did they really feel like they couldn’t sack him because of the FA Cup win? All just seems a bit reactive.

Wasn’t it rumoured that Liverpool pulled out of Amorim was that he wanted more control of transfers? Presumably Utd are setting up a transfer structure themselves? Nagelsmann probably the best out of a bad bunch, but just not sure if he’s got the personality and charisma for a big club (yes I know he was at Bayern, but he wasn’t there for long & it was pretty much a one team league when he was there). Think they missed the boat with Tuchel.

We’ll see how the season goes Threeps, but I just think we need a specialist in there in the longer term over a season. That’s in no way a criticism of Gravenberch who I agree has done very well but I’m not sure he was bought with that role in mind. All the top teams have specialised defensive midfielders.

Yeh as I said on TT, I think with having new management, it has helped Nunez because everyone has to start again to impress Slot. Nunez hasn’t started many games either but I think its in his personality to fight it out. As much as many of us have criticised him (rightly) for his cost outlay vs his goals and missed chances, he does work very hard and is still a useful front 3 player. With some strikers, they find it tough to work in a front 3 but Nunez is very fluid and some of his passes and assists are outstanding. At the same time, yes we could still do with another no.9 to be more clinical. We still haven’t really replaced Mane in that sense. Also as well as our midfield has done, I’d still like a specialist DM.

Or maybe we have got a chance this season as I said before things started in August. I expect less injuries because I don’t think our training is as intensive. We are more controlled than before and our defensive record is also very strong. The one thing that would make me feel that bit more confident would be the acquisition of a proper defensive midfielder. Gravenberch & Jones did very well yesterday but it makes us more dependent on everyone performing well (which I think was a weakness under Klopp) whereas in the games where that won’t be the case we need that insurance policy to help bail us out in midfield to make us more robust. Add that in January and I think we’ve got a real chance.

Danny Welbeck (ex Man Utd) has scored 4 goals this season which is nearly as many as Man Utd as a team have scored in total this season (5 goals).

CM, it’s a completely different culture to the late 1980s. Man Utd can now spend big every season and attract top players if they want to. But they haven’t done this well at all. Instead Ten Hag has brought in players that just haven’t been up to it. Ten Hag clearly lacks the communication skills to motivate this team and can’t seem to get them playing with an identity or pattern. If he sees players not pulling their weight, why hasn’t he moved them on? Ferguson moved players on for a lot less than that.

Here’s what should happen when a manager first comes in. They look what they’ve got and endeavour to get the best out of them and motivate them. If over time some players aren’t pulling their weight, it’s up to the manager to either freeze them out or move them on. This can be helped when the manager brings in better players to replace the ones not delivering.
It strikes me Ten Hag has pretty much failed on every count, from motivating the players, to moving players on, and to bringing better players in.
