We really shouldn’t go out of the group Sean obviously. Should be walking that. However, there’s been signs with a few of the recent England games that Southgate’s tenure might be coming to an end. That Hungary game was dreadful. Just have a bad feeling about the group stage. Reckon Wales will surprise us. They’ll be right up for it.

We have in my view a wonderful selection of attacking players when you think about it. It’s how we play and our approach going into games. We should try and go for it each game than be cautious!!!

Thought Southgate pledged to pick players playing regularly and on form? Phillips has played 53 minutes of football this season including 1 minute in the Premier League yet he is going?!

I don’t think Phillips would have gone Threeps had there been a suitable holding midfielder to replace him. It’s not a position we’re blessed with depth in. It’s also the matter that Phillips has delivered for Southgate, even winning the England player of the year only a year ago.

Southgate should play Phillips in the group stages then try and get him up to speed quickly in the easy games (and they are easy!). A mini preseason if you like.

3p’s… that’s exactly what the groups stages are anyway, a mini-pre-season, a chance for a final tinker and, as expected, win the 1st two, a chance to rest some players for the start of the knock-outs… really don’t see how Engerland can’t top that group with 9 points…

I think you have to be an England fan to know it’s far from a foregone conclusion that we get through a group like that, however easy it looks on paper. The amount of false dawns we’ve witnessed with, arguably, better squads than this one makes most of us pessimistic by nature. Hopeful, yes, but pessimistic nonetheless.

Do be fair, cyber chum, kinda thought the “Golden Generation” was a little bit over hyped to start with…
To me, international football always proves it’s about having a team, not just picking the 11 best players in the League and assuming they would become a team.
Call it management, call it what you like, but the evidence was there for that generation… (and also very clearly proves Prem Football and International football are chalk and cheese)…
Gerrard, Scholes and Lampard may have been the best 3 midefielders of thier generation (and I’m not trying to start that debate again! 😉 ), but no TEAM ever needed more than 1 of them in CM!

You brought up the Golden Generation, not me 😁. With that said, if I was to pick an XI based on the Golden Generation vs this side, I’m struggling to pick a player from the current side. Kane is probably the only one in with a shout but I’d 100% take a young Rooney over Kane even. We’ve done the Beckham debate to death. You think he’s overrated, I think kick-and-rush Bale is overrated. We’re not going to agree 🙂. Admittedly, we seem to be a more functional team these days evidenced by how far we’ve gone in tournaments. But we’ve had much stronger squads in the past.
