“Man City have ‘agreed personal terms’ with Napoli colossus Kalidou Koulibaly.” France Football.
City signing Messi and Koulibally really would leave everyone chasing City imo.
Long way to go on both yet though.

1st September 2020 at 8:34 am #164975Stevo, things are shaping up nicely at Arsenal under Arteta I think you might be being a bit previous on Aubemayang signing his new contract it looks like he definitely will but he’s not quite put pen to paper yet according to reports.

1st September 2020 at 8:50 am #164984Maybe we can get 100 million + for Sterling and not far off for Mahrez.
Brian, unless I’ve misunderstood what you wrote, there’s zero chance of you getting “not far off 100mil” for Mahrez. He turns 30 in February and, even pre-covid, he’s not fetching anywhere near that kind of sum.
City’s owners will get exactly what they want with Messi, the bragging rights of having the best player (debatable) that’s ever played. This is to top trump Qatar’s “we have the World Cup” brag. They won’t care that they will be getting a player that walks around in a huff when losing and does bugger all for the majority of the match. They won’t care about paying 200m and 90m a year salary, to them that’s loose change.
Agree with that Threeps. Messi is the holy grail for the oil states. Qatar got the World Cup. Abu Dhabi got the “best manager” (arguably, at the time) in Pep. Messi is the ultimate trophy for those kind of owners. Bigger than winning the CL in many ways.
Still, as good as Koulibaly and Messi are, I’m not sure buying a 29 yr old and a 33 yr old are the wisest of investments while young players like Sancho, Diaz, Garcia continue to seek opportunities elsewhere.

1st September 2020 at 9:02 am #164991Sterling, though, could probably fetch £60-80mil even in this market, although I’m not sure where he could go. Real Madrid? Inter Milan, Juve maybe? He’s still a good age. Could see him at Juve actually.

1st September 2020 at 9:30 am #165004You’re right Ed both Koulibaly are short term fixes for a year or two but they would improve City and give them a greater chance of reclaiming the PL and winning the CL too.
But will they really happen?

1st September 2020 at 9:38 am #165008Who knows Nine. It’s looking more and more likely that Messi will leave and only City and PSG can pay that kind of money.

1st September 2020 at 10:23 am #165030The Thiago to Utd rumours don’t make any sense. Brilliant player who I was gutted Moyes snubbed back when he was at Barca but would be a very strange buy for Utd assuming VdB gets done. Unless, of course, Pogba is off which seems unlikely now. Liverpool are getting a very good player in Thiago. Very much a case of using Utd to force Liverpool’s hand here imo.

1st September 2020 at 10:53 am #165045I really don’t think liveroool are going to pay the money fir Thiago unless we bring in some big money from sales Ed.
Thiago really is to good an opportunity to miss. Van de beek, ferndes and Pogba can all play number ten while Donny and Pogba can play further back like Thiago aswell
I’ve only seen him play twice but that lad upcanamano off leizbig looks some player. A proper beast and he’s not that dear either. Ideal for utd and Chelsea. Utd linked with him now.

1st September 2020 at 11:11 am #165054Sean, I’d be very concerned if I was a Liverpool fan if they can’t pay £27mil without first selling players. There’s something wrong if Leeds can spend that (£30mil on Rodrigo) without blinking in their first season back in the prem but the champions can’t put that much together. Added to the fact Liverpool were trying to use the furlough scheme and wouldn’t pay the low Werner fee all seems a bit odd to me.

1st September 2020 at 11:22 am #165060This is just me airing some wishful thinking – Liverpool are going to do a self imposed chelsea and not sign anyone this summer, at least not without selling. The reason for this (here comes the wishful thinking), is because they are going to snowball their funds and go all out for Mbappe next year. Thiago could come in this window, but it will not happen without sales. A bit of tongue in cheek and to be taken with a pinch of salt, but stranger things have happened.

1st September 2020 at 11:23 am #165062Yes before anyone points it out. I know we have already signed the world’s second best left back.

1st September 2020 at 11:28 am #165064Ye true Harry lol but we signed him with the Lovren money so as you say, we need to sell then we will buy
Ye Ed, I’m a bit concerned as the other teams below us are getting stronger but I still fully trust klopp and the owners.
Just bizarre we are not spending as we do need players
I really think fabhino is going to our 4th choice centre back and we won’t buy one

1st September 2020 at 11:33 am #165067I remember in the early days of FSG the bemoaning of the “moneyball” strategy of buying young talent and then selling it on at a huge profit later on. But there has been very little mention of “moneyball” on Liverpool forums in recent years. Yet it is still arguably very much a part of the clubs strategy – let’s not forget it worked perfectly when Liverpool sold Coutinho to Barca for a huge profit which in turn allowed the club to buy Van Dijk & Alisson. So has the moneyball strategy ever gone away? I’m not sure it has.

1st September 2020 at 12:34 pm #165096AnonymousInter Milan could look to offload Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen eight months after signing him from Tottenham. Very lazy player.

1st September 2020 at 12:41 pm #165100Not many Coutinho opportunities though Mikus.
“Moneyball a term describing baseball operations in which a team endeavors to analyze the market for baseball players and buy what is undervalued and sell what is overvalued. Unlike a common misconception, it is not about OBP, but whatever is undervalued at that time. It is most commonly used to refer to the strategy used by the front office of the Oakland Athletics. It derives its name from a Michael Lewis book of the same name.”

1st September 2020 at 12:55 pm #165109The window doesn’t close until October 5th I still think Liverpool will be making a signing or two before them
I think Liverpool are strong enough to compete again for the title and the CL this season but they would be pushed to do the same next season and I very much doubt they will try too.
I think SAF had it nailed down at United when they were all conquering always adding to the team/squad every Summer no matter how much they had won and how they were dominating the PL.
Harry I think there’s more chance of Santa bringing you a train set than Mbappe be suprised if Mbappe doesn’t end up at Real Madrid.😊
