Two and half weeks until the season starts and this is the defenders that trained today-

Defenders: Van Dijk, Ndukwe, Chambers, Kerkez, Tsimikas, Ramsay, Frimpong

One can’t play for us this season and 2 have never kicked a ball in the Prem.

We have one non homegrown place left in the squad at the min.

So they finished outside the CL positions with young inexperienced players.

Gotcha.

And those promising players moved on.

If we don’t give Iraola the right tools to work with to be succesful (not finish 6th) then expect similar finishes for us.

Its 2 weeks and 4 days until the league starts.

Iraola still has to physically meet and work with VVD, MacA, Gakpo, Allison, Munoz yet.

Other players yet to physically kick a ball in the pre season tour games Jacquet, Leoni, Bradley, Endo, Eketeke.

VVD is our only fit and available CB and is in his 36th year.

In his first few pressers Iraola has mentioned more than once how thin the squad is.

Szobo now publicly saying the same “The squad is short so we need everybody.”

The squad was massively short last season and we seen the impact of that. Its not got any better.

Much of the optimism I had from Iraola arriving has evaporated by the lack of squad building.

We are in trouble if things dont change within the squad and quick.

Apparently Liverpool have given permission to RBL to talk to Elliot.
He’s not a main target for them but there’s interest there.

Be nice if we signed someone.

Been 40+ days since we signed Muñoz.

Still expect Barcola to get done but the squad is nowhere near where it needs to be.

Players who’s contract are up in 2027-

VVD will be 35 when contract ends.
Allison will be 34
Gomez will be 30
Tsimikas will be 31
Jones will be 26
Endo will be 34
Bajetic will be 22

Not exactly unexpected that players getting older arnt given new contracts.
Gomez is injury prone in the truest sense.
Jones could be out the door this summer.
Bajetic has barely kicked a ball for 2yrs.
Endo hasnt done a great deal either and is currently working his way back from injury.

In previous years, you can go right back to Can and Wijnaldum etc, we let players see out their contract.
None of this is new.

Nwaneri very young still but a decent amount of games under his belt of top flight football.
More of an attacking midfielder but does have approx 25 appearances as a right sided attacker.
Which is considerably more than some of the players we have currently and more than some we are targeting/have been linked with.

Transfer profiles will be set internally by the club according to their needs. Targets are then selected using those profiles and an overarching strategy.

Jacquet less than 40 top flight games.
Muñoz less than 50 top flight games.
Kerkez less than 80 top flight games.

Target-
Diomande less than 50 top flight games.

No I don’t want the club to buy just anyone.

I don’t think I’ve ever said that or taken that position.

Diomande is very much both footed, and has proven to be so.
Which is highly likely why we wanted him so much and is in line with the profile of being able to play both sides.
The same can’t be said for other targets or recruits who have done “bits and pieces” off the right.
Some very little off the right.

As I said previously the market for left footed wide attackers (or even wide right attackers at all) appears to be very slim.
