Those comments about our full backs underlapping are correct t and it is part of the balance issue. In Kerkez, Frimpong and Bradley, and I guess also Robeetson, we have fullbacks that can stretch the play by getting up and down out wide. I thought this was why we bought them. But instead they are going inside and compressing play into a box on the edge of the opposion penalty area. Players like Wirtz,Salah and Isak need space and they are not getting any.
But that that leads to another issue, being wide open to a quick transition. With the fullbacks in positions difficult to get back and for whatever reason Gravenberch has been given more freedom to get forward we are wide open to a quick transition probably resulting in a good chance. MacAllister hasn’t the pace or physicality to cover Gravenberch and is usually too far forward anyway.
So we are getting the negative impact of using sich defenders whilst defending but not offsetting that with the positive impact you would expect from them. We have zero width.
I said when we bought these fullbacks that whilst good players they might be wrong players for our style. Frimpong would be a worldie in a team like Palace. I thought we might play Gravenberch between the CBs in effectively a back 3 and use the FBs for width but that is clearly not the intention.

Asiansensation – Gravenberch made only 12 league starts in his first season – hard to fairly judge him on that. As soon as he got a run in the team he’s looked a different player. Same for Chiesa, barely got a start last season, now he’s getting more runs in the team, he’s looked a different player. Wirtz has started every game so far and is still struggling to click. Not writing him off but it is now getting concerning certainly in the light of German players record in the premier league.

I’m not fully understanding your comments 3ps on the full-backs compressing. Are they just getting in the way of the centre halfs? And are they leaving space?

Threeps, in my 4231 brain, that is HOW we should play the system and how I always played it with the 6 splitting the centre backs. It creates balance, width, and the ability to transition quickly into a compact unit when out of possession. It clearly defines the roles of the 10 and 9 which is what Wirtz’s issue is at the moment (square peg, round hole). The 10 always needs to desperately have a strong relationship and understanding with the 9, interchanging, mixing it up and we have the perfect three players to choose the two in Wirtz (a natural 10!), Isak and Ekitike, all three are intelligent players that naturally drift in an out. We don’t have that ‘relationship’ atm. It makes for predictable build-up play which is what we are seeing coupled with wastefulness in the attacking third (Mo and Wirtz the most guiltiest of that) and because we’re not compact enough out possession it’s creating massive opportunities for any opposition and I mean, any!
Out of possession then we are at sea because we are not in place or have an effective insurance policy to quickly transition from with the ball to without. 4231 ordinarily slips into a 442 (I used to go 451) with the double pivot screening spaces between the lines and the attacking unit making sure gaps are covered initiating the press. This is compromised because we have full backs all over the shop, Grav trying to cover double the space as Mac isn’t fully fit and Konate being Konate. The lad is a fucking unit and he’s just arsing up on a regular basis and getting bullied left, right and centre. Fuck off to Madrid if your mind is already there. We absolutely needed a centre back in the last window and with the financial outlay we’ve seen you would have thought we’d have got another one in other than the now gone for a year, Leoni. Virgil can’t play every game, Konate is Konate and Gomez is just a decent defender but a wanker with the ball at his feet. Liverpool FC needs two world class defenders and we only have one. Rant over.
I know we are top but all of the above is not happening consistently right now which isn’t a surprise considering all the new faces and believe we will look awesome when we all master the system but until we do we need establish a solid unit (VVD and Gomez as the CB’s, Robbo and Szobo as fulls (Bradley defending like Trent V.2 and Frimp doing his own thing), Grav and Endo as the pivot, Wirtz as the 10, Gakpo and Mo as the inverted 11 and 7), Ekitike up top (both Mac and Isak not had a preseason) and get some stability back with us slowly segueing new players in.

Rob, I’ve just changed nameservers to try to resolve the recent problems. An SSL certificate is included as part of my hosting package and the host had assured me that it will kick in automatically but that it takes up to 24 hours after changing nameservers. I assure you I’ll have the SSL in place asap. I’ve been chasing it today but they’ve said it’s just a case of waiting it out.
As Sean said, this is something I do just because I enjoy it. There’s no team. It’s just me. That’s not to say it’s not important but I genuinely do try to solve every issue as quickly as I can.
I’ve said it before. If anyone has experience with websites and wants to help out, I’m very much open to a helping pair of hands. I don’t make a penny from the site so I can’t pay anything but I think a working footydebate site is a decent place to discuss football and I’d like it to stay that way.

Still fuming with that late winner from Palace – and can’t get my head around how dumb Kerkez was in the build-up to it and it was 100% his fault. An unthreatening ball rolling towards him, seconds left to play, just FFS put your (right) foot through it anywhere up-field and it’s game over, hard-earned draw and move on to next game. But no….. he can’t even trust his wrong foot to make contact with the ball, so contrives to turn around and hit a blind pass with his competent foot out for a threatening throw-in. Even VVD alongside him was shouting/pointing to where the ball should go! It’s not like he was expected to make an ‘eye of a needle’ pass with his right foot, it only needed to go as far as the half-way line with about a 65m width target. Brainless.

Yeah I knew as soon as he did that they’d score. You know when you get that sinking feeling in your stomach about the inevitable. Having said that it was a mistake but we still had an opportunity to defend which we failed with so much more wrong about that goal than pointing the finger at Kerkez.
Without a keeper like Ali we could have been 3 down at HT, we were that outplayed.
Performances like that then people should point the finger at the coaching team not individual players. (And no before anyone gets excited I’m not having a go at Slot who I have a lot of respect for, but his previous brilliance doesn’t detract the fact he can be questioned or criticised).

Ye red , i just don’t understand why kerkes and macca keep starting when they are out of form. Robbo should be starting.
My concern is loads of times we have been battered in 1st halves like sat but always come out with a result
We just concede far to many chances which eventually will lead to goals.5 times this season we have conceded two in a game.
The league is there to be won but if we keep conceding goals we wont.
We miss trent creativity from right full. Full backs under lapping with no width. Mo has been poor. Absolutely love the guy but when hes bad, hes terrible.
Dont like being to harsh on the team as everything they have done and a very tough summer with jota passing but we have been so poor at at times this season.
2nd half v everton was terrible aswell. Late wins are masking over poor performances
Its very very early days. Plenty of time but longer new players take to settle the more the vultures be out to knock them down.
Huge week now coming up.
