So, the day of reckoning is upon you pommies!! Is it going to be Boris the Doris & His Faithful Minions or Jezza the Goonie & His Band of Merry Unionists?

Eitherway, niether is as pretty as our new Queen of the North over here… never thought I would ever fancy a Prime Minister, and her cabinet ain’t bad either!

I’ve tried to keep politics away from a football site personally ??

The amount of times I’ve tuned into Question Time each week, it’s become farcical.

It’s a mess I’m sorry to say and it’ll only get worse if things carry on the way they are.

That’s why it went under “Non-Football”, and yet you still couldn’t resist! πŸ™‚

Chucky, whatever happens tomorrow and it seems that it will be somewhere between a 20’s odd Tory majority and a hung Parliament we won’t for sure have as a good looking a Prime Minister as Finland.

I kind of agree with Nil though if we think football on a forum can at times be devisive it’s probably a picnic in Disneyland compared to politics.?

              Not if we’re grown-ups about it… (there’s a challenge for everyone!).

Personally, having lived in Denmark and Finland for the best part of 15 years now, and it’s the same in most Scandinavian countries, I’m convinced a “hung” parliament is actually better for the average Joe than having a Government with a majority who then have “total” power to implement whatever their agenda is.

A country like the UK, where power swings from left to right to left to right, in my mind, doesn’t really benefit the average Joe because there are too many cycles…

Chucky – Hung parliaments make it impossible for anything to get done, unless one party concedes in a coalition, so it really isn’t a desirable way to run the country. Having said that, I agree with 9 on the likely outcomes of this election, and I am keen to avoid a Bozo majority. For lack of a better word, it’s just shit atm.

Chucky – It would be sweet if power swung from left to right in the UK, but unfortunately it swings right, and then gets lost somewhere on the way back at the moment.

Harry… I used to think like that but, as mentioned, having lived in countries which have basically have had hung parliaments for decades, I couldn’t disagree more and I’ll try to explain why, bare with me! πŸ™‚

When it comes down to the basic needs of a civilized society, pretty much all parties through the spectrum pretty much agree on all the major issues, things like a proper Health system (which benefits all), a proper Education system (which benefits all), a proper and working infrastructure (which benefits all), a properly funded Emergency system (which benefits all), then all parties in a hung Parliament don’t really have a reason to object to new policies or improvements. What politician is going to stand up and argue against those ideas? No one, not even your worst nightmare of a politician of whatever side of the fence he’s grazing in, so you’re left with a Government which has no choice but to take care of the basics as mentioned above, which in turn benefit the vast majority of the populous.

You’re also left with a government which no party, left, right, extreme or whatever, has the power to implement what could be describe as an “extreme” policy of any sorts.

Now the flip side, you have a succession of Governments, with opposing views, which are generally elected into power on the basis of the previous Government actually being voted out (I’m a great believer that Governments don’t win elections, it’s more like previous Governments lose elections for “cocking-up”, I mean, who would vote out a Government that’s actually doing a good job?). This now leaves the populous with a Government who spends more time “undoing” what the previous Government did, rather than implementing new ideas etc… and 5/10 years later it all swings back the other way.

I live in a country which has had “hung” parliaments for decades, and also happens to have one of the best education systems in the world (completely free of charge at every stage!), a more than adequate health system (never had an issue seeing a doctor and every time I’ve ever been to hospital for an ’emergency’, never waited more than an hour!), a social care system which knocks the socks of anything in the UK (no homeless people around here for example), I can walk down the straight at night feeling about a millions times safer than I ever did in the UK, an infrastructure that I’ve never had an issue with (been here 10 years so I fell pretty confident saying that!).

Finland isn’t perfect, certain people are still capable of being assholes, but as I’ve mentioned above, all parties agree on the basics, and from what I can see, that benefits society far better than a country which swings from left to right and back again on a regular basis.

Chucky – Maybe it’s the press in this country, or the two party system that makes it more difficult. I agree with everything you say about how it should work though.

I thought Ireland was bad but the uk politicians and government paint our guys in good light.

I just wonder , do we need them or at least cut the numbers down, one MP per county…..bring back the counties while we are at it.. No matter what happens with all the promises, Joe Soap will pick up the cost. Governments should not be running railways, airlines but should control water, gas and electric

Maybe they do, maybe they don’t, but as I strongly believe both the major parties have the same attitude when dealing with hung parliaments, namely the idea they won’t last forever and one of them will get back to having a majority at some stage sooner than later, neither party has realistically entertained the idea of actually working together properly. If you have four or five major parties, they all know they’re never really going to get a majority and know they have to cooperate, and as I’ve mentioned above, no politician is going to stand up in any country and argue against the idea of improving education, health systems, infrastructure etc…

As for the press, it’s all about ratings and clickbait for them these days, doesn’t matter what agenda they have if you look deep enough.

Basically, it’s going to take one hell of a compelling argument to convince me a two-party system is better for the “Joe Soap” than a multi-party system.
