It makes me wonder whether Southgate has formulated a template (at the very least in his own mind), then be able to rotate his back 4 to keep individuals fresh.

Both Shaw and Chilwell can be depended on. Reliable and Solid. I couldn’t say the same about Stones. Mings a Starter for me, but who would the other guy be? Maguire?, Coady?

All depends too on players not picking up injuries in the early starters and the type of opposition faced.

We’ve really got to develop character and trust in our own ability if we’re going to go far – the leadership and British-Bulldog-Spirit needed.

I would love England to go all the way, one of the Reasons for Southgate.

That’s just not true Steve. I suspect you probably haven’t seen much of Shaw this season if you say that.

Shaw 2.5
Chilwell 1.2

Shaw more crosses per 90. Much better cross accuracy. Better pass accuracy. The players voted him as one of the best in the league (over Chilwell). I totally get anyone choosing Chilwell but to say it’s not even tough after the season Shaw had means there’s no way you’ve watched him enough this season!

Both Shaw and Chilwell are very good players and there’s not a lot to choose between the two of them.

Chilwell though has the impetus of winning the CL behind him and that’s the reason that if I was Southgate I would go with Chilwell but if Southgate selects Shaw I would still be just as happy with that.

Completely agree Nine. No arguments from me there. I was referring to Steve’s reasoning as well as his suggestion that it’s not even close. Very unfair on a player who’s been probably the best LB in Europe this season, certainly in the league anyway, as evidenced by his TOTY place. England are blessed for options in both FB sides and no combination would have me particularly concerned. Much more pressing matters in the selections.

Nine, I said the same. I’m in nature to just taking players for what they are rather than pre-judging them because of their club shirt.

There’s a lot of players from that POV I’ve praised objectively.

It’s a narrative towards ‘waiting’ for Italy to find the back of the net.

No credit towards Turkey. They’ve not come to make up the numbers.

Just arrogance. Assessment should be judged on the overall balance of play.

Well I have seen wales live far more than chelsea Sean mate, but I would have to say my love for chelsea far outweighs my love for the Welsh national team because its true and no point pretending otherwise.

I was at pretty much every wales home game when Hughes was manager and we came so close to qualifying for world Cup. There when we beat Italy 2.1 that was an amazing night. Truth is though the standard of the Welsh team was absolutely awful as far back as I can remember and while you will always support your nation you can’t love dog poop no matter how much you love the dog. It was better than for decades previous under Hughes and the standards went up even more with the late Gary Speed effectively setting everything in the right direction.

This is only the 2nd major tournament I have seen my country play in!
