Hmm. It does seem a natural movement from the technique to try and dribble past the keeper, but the right leg effectively then looks as though it’s just ‘ran into a lamppost’. That’s what slow-motion tells me. Dying seconds of the game so maybe the Ref called it right.

Alfie, what I’m noticing is the way of our thinking being influenced by players ‘manufacturing’ penalties. It’s probably gone on in previous decades, but nobody really back then really deconstructing every frame of movement (as such and as much as we now do with the technology at our disposal).

What I would be encouraged by is the idea of bringing in overseas Refs and somebody no-nonsense and bold enough to make the call and stick by his guns ala the example of yesterday.

99% if that incident took place in a Prem game in the dying stages and the Pen was given, there would probably have been furore. Of course, there’s always going to be that mindset from the opposite direction if that Penalty happens to be for the team you support.

In both cases, the attacking player was absolutely looking for the peno 100%, and neither player made a “realistic” effort to avoid the challange… the big difference being WB made it a lot harder for the ref to wave play by sliding in the way he did…

I’m torn on it Chucky. I can completely sympathise with both sides of the argument. I’d lean on favouring the application of common sense in not awarding the pen. Arsenal gained zero advantage from it.

The handball could well have been given, I seem to recall the commentators telling us there is a much lower threshold in Europe when Eriksen accidentally touched the ball with a fingertip over in Munich at the start of the tournament.

Apparently the ref admitted he made a mistake in not awarding it, but Tuchel might have made that up.

Sweddy, kinda know what you mean, good to see a degree of sensibleness going on (but it was the Goonies, so I wouldn’t have been upset with the Peno and red-card! 🙂 )

As for anybody still thinking Saka’s was even in the same time zone as a possible peno they really should see a doctor.
