“Premier League clubs have voted to revert to the old summer transfer window dates, to give themselves extended bargaining powers with European teams.

Top tier chief executives gathered at a hotel in central London to agree to abandon the current arrangements, under which the window closes on the eve of the new season. That date had been set two years ago, after clubs complained that transfer dealing disrupted their preparation for the earliest matches of the season.

As a result of today’s meeting, this summer’s window will close several weeks later, on September 1. Reverting to the original system, previously abandoned in 2018, was championed after the big six clubs argued that they had become vulnerable to having their players bought by European clubs, without being able to buy in replacements.

In two rounds of voting, clubs turned down the option of ending domestic transfers the day before the start of the season, but allowing international transfers to continue.

The summer window is particularly crucial for the leagues this year as it will be the last before Britain leaves EU work permit conditions.

The Premier League confirmed in a statement that this year’s summer transfer window will close at 5pm on September 1. “Clubs agreed after discussing the topic at length at previous Shareholders’ Meetings,” the statement explained.

The clubs have yet to agree on homegrown player quotas with the Football Association, which wants more English talent to break through after Brexit.

The league wants a global free market, with permits given to any player who has a contract with a top-flight club, while the FA will only support that option if the minimum number of home-grown players in a first-team squad is raised from eight to 12.

At the meeting, the league also presented to the clubs its own research on the success of VAR. The technology has been the most divisive issue in the league this season, with two-thirds of Premier League supporters believing it has made the game less enjoyable, a YouGov poll found this week. A very good idea imho,as it will give more time PL teams to sign & sell players they want.

To be fair we’re only going back to how it recently was and it never made any sense that we were out of kilter with all of the other major European League’s leaving PL Clubs vulnerable to late bids from European Clubs for their star players which then they couldn’t replace.

Weirdly most transfers are completed in the last few days of the window.

still amazes me that they still use fax. so many options out there that are superior.

pleased they have reverted back to this deadline. was absolute nonsense in the first place. I personally think transfer window should be scrapped but teams are only allowed to make a certain amount of transfers in and out so you don’t get tactical signings.
