Formations are fluid. 442, 4231, 433, 451 whatever, that’s only relevant for goal kicks and the graphics they put on the screen to keep arm chair fans happy. Roles and instructions are more relevant.

Only saw the goals. Was disturbed by their 2nd, not because Frimpong fell over and lost the ball but the fact when he got back up he stood 5m from his player for a good few seconds who would have been completely free if the ball fell to him. Thats just basics.

Don’t think you can take much away yet on how we will play this season with such a disjointed team on the pitch. The last friendly or two with everyone back will give more of an indication.

Gomez injured is absolutely no surprise

Leaves us with two fit centre backs. One who has never played in the pl

Gomez’s injury doesn’t change anything with regards to transfers, we are not going to buy a player because another player was injured in preseason. There will be a transfer plan in place and the team will be working towards it but this summer it seems its become increasingly difficult with average players commanding 70m+ fees.

With regards to the defence it is well known we are a little short there, I think we might bring in someone that could play both CB and RB. It could even just be a Klavan type signing, cheap but experienced squad player that’s happy with being cover and very occasionally starts.

Review of my thoughts on transfers after season was closing:

Manager/coach whatever it’s called: Enrique/Iraola + Thiago as ass. Iraola ✅

Gk: same as this year. If for some reason it doesn’t work out – get Trafford from city. Or Meslier as cover on a free. Same thoughts, Meslier not an option anymore though.
Rb: kayode in, ramsay out
Cb: senesi for free, gomez likely out. Schlotterbeck in Senesi not an option anymore. Schlottetbeck injured. Need to strengthen here badly!
Lb: let’s live with kostas coming back. He’ll be great for dressing room and good cover. He remembers heavy metal.
Dm: invest! Camara/Stiller
Cm: endo out. macallister out if we can get paid properly. Would love to keep Jones. Not sure we can prio Wharton?
Rw: Diomande, keep Elliott for depth. Would be great to snap up bowen on the cheap, but doubt he will be. Chiesa out. Bowen not available. Perhaps keep Chiesa? Need a strong option in!
Lw: barcola (but not completely sold on him). Gakpo out.
Strikers: no change unless Lewandowski would like to join on the cheap for one last dance changed my mind, he wont fit iraola style. Still need an option here in case Isak is injured. Will be very hard to find.

With Iraola having a fresh, unfiltered look at our players, I have the feeling one or two surprising youth, or squad players may emerge and go into the senior squad, and get more playing time, just like happened with Rio last summer.

Who knows, he might even unearth a gem amongst them.

macattack, forget about Diomande, he doesn’t even want to play for Liverpool, PSG is his first choice, let him go there. And he’s ridiculously overpriced anyway.

Time to look elsewhere for another top winger, who’s reasonably priced.

Just get Zambarnyi in for CB.
Gomez and/or VVD will be leaving next summer any way.
Jacquet and Leoni are raw and new to the league.
Leoni still not back in full training yet.
Zambarnyi allows them time to acclimate to the league.
He knows what Iraola wants from a CB and has experience of the Prem.

But again we’re tied to PSG with this one.

Barcola has made his decision weeks ago as always reported, plan confirmed as the winger is open to explore new options.

𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐥 have Barcola on top of their shortlist since summer 2025 and continue to be keen, waiting on the price from PSG.

The credible Romano is reporting that Liverpool have been are leading the race for Barcola since April (whatever “leading the race” means), but the price has to be reasonable, otherwise no deal.

If PSG take the piss and try to exploit us, then we look elsewhere, there are definitely other top, reasonably priced wingers around.

Can’t repeat the £125m Isak calamitous, debacle again.

I actually think Barcola is an ideal signing for us. Very direct and knows where the goal is. I would have loved the Diomande signing, but that is looking increasingly unlikely with a shoot out between PSG and Real now seeming his preference.

Diomande to Madrid just seems weird.
Mourinho isn’t known for embracing young players. In fact he’s known for wasting some of the best young players.

And the current Madrid don’t like paying €100mil plus for untested talent.

Doesn’t sit right with me.

No worries Rob, just didn’t want you or anyone else thinking I’m one of these Diaz fanboys that kept thinking he would have made a massive difference last season or something (spoiler: he wouldnt)

But if anyone is actually interested it’s reported extensively over here to be a €130m + €25m.

How does affect us? Doenst really, just shows what sort of prices elite level wingers are going for this summer. Makes the reported Diomande demand from RBL seem almost reasonable.

Oh and means Bayern will likely turn to Gakpo as a replacement creating a domino effect. Kinda the point of my original post on the matter.

Spread payments and we’re in an industry where there are multiple money-making streams players can bring to the club. Personally, I think the valuation is excessive and I do feel at the best of times, we’re tunnel-visioned and not thinking 2-3 alternative options; even short-term marquee type of players.

Now that’s about the absolute maximum price Liverpool should pay for Barcola – if indeed we are after him and if he wants to join us.

None of this ludicrously overpaying for players crap like last summer.
