@Happy ask yourself why is Villa willing to let go of their 33yr old first choice GK with just 24hrs left in d window to replace him.. for the past 2years he has been in decline and unless you don’t watch villa play you won’t notice.. if they wanted to replace him with someone for now they could’ve done worse than get Kepa onloan before he went to Arsenal.

Where did you hear £40 for Martinez. That is way too much. Vitek is the reason Martinez makes sense. Martinez for the next 2 or 3 seasons and Vitek lined up as his replacement. As to why Villa want to sell Martinez:
1. They are fucked re PSR

They already sold Ramsey and loaned out Bailey amongst others they let go so they aren’t too stuck about PSR because they are still actively trying to sign Ascensio and Paqueta from PSG also not having a young GK should be the more reason to hold on to him instead of willingly letting him go and yes they do also want to get his wage bill of 150k off the books as he is 33yrs old with 4years on his contract

With Cunha and Mount injured, Rashford and Garnacho out and Sancho soon to follow and definitely not playing again for us, do we desperately need a left winger too?? Who is going to play there?
If we want to have absolutely any hope of getting into the European places this year, we need (before today is done):
– A first-team goalkeeper
– A first-team central midfielder
– A backup left winger (preferably a young one to fill in for Cunha)My gut feeling is that we’ll see Martinez join and that’s about it… another failed summer transfer window.

We need lots mate all over the fucking place, because most of what we still have is shite. The chasm between our squad and those of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea is massive. Now you may not rate all the players in those squads, but you can’t deny their respective strengths. We’re on deadline day and still looking for a keeper and you have to say, adding a CM (we need two) looks impossible. So we go into post transfer window playing Dalot at left wing back, a shaky back line, no midfield and a rusty striker, just the one buy the way. I’d say others have done much better business and the gap between us and the top teams, which we of course no longer are, has widened.

Martinez is somebody you only like if he plays for you. 33 is his peak years as he is a keeper, I actually think we need a cocky twat with a bit of attitude. He has it but in a good way, he does command his back and will bollock the back line and he is a winner. 30 million and we can easily get 4 years out of him, but not over 30 million.

I find it amusing that even before Amorim arrived. Nearly everyone said that whomever takes charge will need at least two summer transfer windows to try to sort this squad out!
Think we need to temper our expectations! One summer transfer window won’t sort out all of our issues.
We all have our views on which player etc what position is most important.
The question I ask is are we making improvements for the long term. Personally I think we are._____________________________

Well so far Amorim has managed to get rid of Rashford, although I think he’ll be back, Antony, Malacia looks like he’s going to Elche, Hojlund (although it wouldn’t have bothered me if we’d kept him for another year), Garnacho, there’s still time to get rid of Sancho and Eriksen, Lindelof and Evans are gone on frees. From that point of view it hasn’t been bad.
Getting in new players is concerning though, I’m not convinved we needed both of Cunha and Mbuemo, the latter of whom is looking a better buy right now, given that Bruno and Amad can both play in that ’10’ role. Would the £60-odd million we spend on either Mbuemo or Cunha have been better spent on a midfielder? I think so and the failure to get in new ‘keeper when it was plain as day that neither Onana nor Bayindir were good enough is also a major concern.
It’s not Amorim so much as the so-called football men in the upper echelons of the club who either okayed the above transfers without going, ‘Hang on a minute, don’t we need a keeper more that a number 10?’ or ‘Surely a midfielder is needed?’ These guys jobs are to either work with the manager or overrule him when his requests don’t make sense for the long-term future of the club._____________________________

@killy spot on mate .. why they kept it so late to work on getting a GK beggars belief.. there were alot of options out there but they ignored until Both Onana n Bayindir reminded them how unreliable they are but giving Villa 30m to 40m for Martinez so Villa can use some of to sign Lammens is definitely not the answer.. Diogo Costa is an option too but the club just never learn and those of you on here lauding Martinez cocky attitude don’t realize the last 2years Martinez save percentages have really been in decline … it will be another case of “i told you” after he is signed.

@sympathy you are not wrong saying we need another left wigner but in Amorim’s system any of Bruno, Mainoo, Zirkzee can play the ‘left 10’ role
Pretty sure he lined Sporting up like that – one tricky winger type no 10 and one creative type
The squad will be very light all over if we manage to offload the rest of the bomb squad but in a season like this with no European (or League Cup), I’ll take it if it means all the negative influences have been weeded out

@DeeUtd, I see your point about Martinez but the fact of the matter is he’s still better than both Onono and Altay put together. He’s also a leader when we are crying out for them around the pitch. Bruno is one but, let’s be honest, in the pantheon of great United captains, I’m not sure he’s even in the bargain basement. He may be in decline but he’ll be a leader, he’ll coach the backline and the likelihood is he won’t get more than 2-3 years given his age profile which will take him up to 35/36. HAving said that, £40m is a lot to spend on a player you’re going to let leave on a free in 2-3 years.
