“Stone Roses or Oasis don’t feature in any top 50 ever rock bands polls. ”

Even as an oasis fan, I’d agree with you. To be anywhere near the best ever, you’ve got to be phenomenal.

“And so they shouldn’t… at best both were “pop with an attitude problem”!! ”

Although you’re not entirely wrong i that they were widely appealing, with guitars. Like them or not, think that the entire band were talented or not (they were technically quite poor), they released a lot of decent songs. They over-did the ballad side of things maybe but they were good at what they did. I would still definitely call them “Rock”, just with pop elements.

“I don’t get nirvana at all. How many albums did they have? Depressing music but I absolutely loved their cover of Bowie’s the man who saved the world. ”

Bowie is my favourite artist. Like you, I also do not get Nirvana. I do like their cover of MWSTW though, along with I think 2 other songs. After that, I don’t see the appeal.

I do like some of the other Seattle bands of the time though, they can also be pretty depressing (Alice in Chains and Soundgarden/Audioslave). Chris Cornell was incredibly talented but I understand why he wasn’t for everyone.

Recommend : Talking Heads – ‘Stop Making Sense’ semi-live album. Some of the versions in that are better than the album’s, IMO. I don’t know everything that Talking Heads have released but I am getting more into them over time.

Lucky, have a listen to “on earth as it is in hell” by a band called Hell, local band to me, that particular song was written in 1982/3 finally released in 2008, they were so far ahead of their time.

Quite a sad story really if you read into it, and them being really local they were personal friends…….Pagan

Yeah pagan mate if that was written early eighties it’s way ahead of its time. It has plenty of 80’s about it but plenty of progressive elements too, like a bridge between maiden and dream theatre. Music vid just saw of it reminds me of tenacious d!

Ever heard a band called nightwish mate? reminded me a little of them although nightwish have a gorgeous female soprano as their lead singer, if you want to check them out I suggest their end of an era live album as much better than the recorded versions of their stuff

Just read the bio on wiki pagan, such a shame the original singer didn’t get to record his album. We all know of tragedies like cobain as it happens after they get their break, but there are so many great bands that could have been but were denied to the world through tragedy.

Reminds me of a band called mother love bone, their lead singer died of heroin overdose just before their debut was to drop. If he had survived they would have been one of the biggest bands if the nineties imo, like hell they didnt take themselves too seriously either. The singer Andrew Wood was such a funny performer, they could play on front of 3 people and he would be acting as though there were 100k watching but all on good fun just enjoying the only thing that made him happy.

Seen Nightwish a few times, think they’re on their third vocalist now, their version of the snowman is a good Christmas alternative.

Hell were fantastic in their early days, didn’t do gigs, they did almost theatrical performances, all ended in tragedy though in the late 80s. Still have a load of tapes recorded at their early practices in the local church hall before they got banned for being Devi worshippers, which of course they weren’t, but was quite funny all the same.

                    ……….Pagan

Yep, Dave went round and retuned all the stuff he had of other people’s, records tapes and the like, paid for his own funeral and committed suicide, never saw it coming.

They only got back together because Tony’s son didn’t believe that Dave from his dads old band had taught Andy Sneap (ex Sabbat, Judas Priest and renowned producer) to play guitar. He wrote to Andy to see if it was true and they reformed the band to finally record the album.

Tarja my fave of their singers pagan, the current singer out of this world too though.

It’s weird to think that it wasn’t too long ago people would be persecuted like that over devil worshipping and all that. Watch this pagan will make you chuckle, and I promise this was a real show!

That’s so sad pagan to think of how someone can get to a mental state where they can premeditate their suicide like that. Mental health is such a fragile thing.

Went to see WASP in 84 in Nottingham, the place was besieged by Christian and feminist groups offering to buy your ticket off you so they could burn them, still have a bootleg recording of that gig.

Blackie Lawless was accused on TV by some religious bigwig of being the Antichrist, he replied “you should be grateful to me, I’m keeping you in a job”

Yeah mustaine from megadeth is born again as well I think pagan. I think if you grow up in a community with constant images of heaven and hell, demons and angels and eternal damnation and all that its a fair chance it will effect your psychology for the rest of your life. I am so grateful to have not had to endure that in my childhood.

Yeah I thought they sang together well too rover, liked the version of phantom of the opera they did on end of an era, the siren was great on that too.

The new singer is really good to he fair different but very impressive.

Got around 1100 in digital music spreaded over a number of genres and live music, though that took me over 13 years to build since ‘switching over’.

Nearly a couple of years ago, went back to buying CD’s outright from online and a few visits to HMV and a certain Poundstore. I missed the Inlays and just the extras you otherwise will never get from digital media. Shame one or two mainstream supermarkets aren’t sticking with the novelty of ‘rebirth’. Love my 80s and 90s compilations, bought nearly all the Oasis Albums and always looking to add.

If you can get hold of a good Amp or a modern day Receiver a Bluetooth Powerspeaker, and a CD Deck, it’ll get you thinking. Yes there is now Spotify, but owning your own collection is special if you’re a big fan of Music.
