After a failed season, we now look to the summer transfer window, to rejuvenate the team correctly, and not make the big mistakes from last summer.
Richard Hughes could well learn from Jörg Schmadtke, before he goes paying 50% over the asking price for a player again, as with Isak. But I can’t see him being given the funds by FSG to make such a mistake again.
Schmadtke bought us Szoboszlai, easily our best midfield signing since Souness, and yet he still thought he was too expensive at £60m (see below), which was comparable to other top midfielders at the time. Plus, quite notably, he bought Gravenberch, a key player in our title win last season, for a bargain £34m, and of course Mac Allister for a reasonable £55m.
Time to get it right this time.

Christian Eckerlin, German MMA fighter brought in for Brighton as a coach to help out with their set pieces, especially defending. They the best record in the league when it comes to defending set pieces and getting a MMA fighter in actually makes sense, cause he is just teaching them how to off balance anyone that comes at them. How to get that extra yard on the attacker! On the other hand we have conceded the third most goals from set pieces without any specialized coach there.

Well Well, how about this: Our game versus Villa is next Friday Sky Live. Villa thanks to their triumph tonight will be playing in the Europa League Final on the Wednesday after.
Players without a doubt will be rested and not only that, laying all these eggs in one basket if it means winning the Europa will guarantee not only a qualification for the Champions League next season for Villa, but also for the Team finishing 6th this season.
This is like a win-win in the best interests of us and the teams beneath us able to finish 6th to steal an extra CL Spot.

It would actually not guarantee that the 6th spot finish would be enough, there is a possibility that Brentford would have to lose their last game against us to guarantee that the 6th spot finish is enough for them to get Champions League football.

62 Points is the Key Rob for both us and Villa. It goes back to permutations and the having to rely on the others giving us a helping hand. I do hope Villa go all the way with securing both a league place and a trophy to allow another club team finishing 6th the opportunity to experience Champions League.

Challenge all round for both Iraola, his coaching team and players. Multiple factors will determine the players staying healthy both mentally and physically ala the progression of the World Cup Teams each of those may be involved in.
Silver lining if a team is knocked out early.
Pre-season is likely to start towards to the end of July; only a handful of weeks in preparation for the new season. A lot to absorb, but will be exciting and a little anxious too.

Nil, hopefully we will get to see some of the youth players, returning injured players and reserve players in the preseason (abe, morrison, chiesa, leoni, nyoni, danns, bajcetic, etc). Could be a chance for some of them to show what theyve got… would love to some of them to step up and make a claim for the first team squad!

Very Good Shout Asian! That’s encouraging. Hopefully, these individuals will be noticed than ignored by Iroala and they are included in his long-term plans. Leoni I’m excited to see, plus the return of Danns and Bajcetic. They have potential. It will look more hopeful once they all regroup late summer.

you do realize Abe is 15 and is at least 2 years from making his name, Morrison is not good enough, Danns is on his last chance and Bajcetic has not played football for almost 3 seasons now, or there was half a season there. Chiesa will stay yes as there is not a single club out there willing to pay him the same salary but I do like him, hopefully he gets his act together and gets fit. Too much pasta I reckon… Leoni will have a breakout season and Nyoni will continue to build his game. I actually quite like him, if he played in another position people would be quicker to understand how good he actually is. Cause he is at the same level as Rio right now, just in another position or perhaps even better than Rio. The posters here have not gotten the fact that he has played more than a young Steven Gerrard had at his age. How he dealt with the limited gametime he got last season really impressed me, he never gave the ball away. He had a pass ratio of about 90% or more each game but that was not what impressed me the most, he had the positional awareness to make certain blocks. When to press for the ball and when not, when to stay in position and when to roam. All I am saying that the last u18 player to make it in the midfield for us was our former captain. Carra played his debut game there as well and got a goal I think but never played there again but Nyoni is the one to keep an eye out for. Gerrard had a bit more experience at the same age but the experience is very similar. Gerrard got more games in the premier league at the time, Nyoni got more gametime in the champions league and the cups at the same age. I would not be surprised to see us give Nyoni about 15-20 games this season, it´s more likely to be about 10 games. As soon as he packs on some weight we are talking about a serious baller I reckon.
He was the only player to impress me in our last game of the season, he was breaking up play, making the right decisions. He showed me just about enough to convince me that he could be a defensive midfielder in the long run. Even dictating play with his passing from that position, he just needs about 10 kilos.

You do realise that abe will be 16 in july… and hes currently training with the first team. Morrison, danns and bajcetic need a good preseason and more gametime… players miraculously can step up quickly, the fact morrison is already in the NI set up… similar to connor bradley could give him a platform to step up! In order for this to happen… you need to start playing as much as you can to build confidence.
Your assessment of nyoni and to a lesser extent leoni i have to agree with!
Any other players from the youth and reserves that can step up? We have kaide gordon and lewis koumas coming back.. and oh yeah owen beck should be back from injuury sooon?

yes asian, name me the last 16 year old player to feature in the team, he is not gonna play next season. He might get one debut game in the cups but that would be it, 3-5 minute cameo in the cup. You have not even seen the kid play and are predicting him to be in the lineup.

Well im being a bit pedantic here but ngumoha played for us at 16 and even scored at the age of 16 against newcastle… so yes its possible.. and apparently joshua abe is being touted as a bigger prospect than even rio. So yes its possible…
however, i dont know whats bothering you?? All ive said to nil was “would be great to see some of our youth prospects get to show what they have and stake a claim for the first team “squad” in the preseason”… no ones said that these players will be 1st teamerz did they?? Or the next messi?

there is no problem asian, it´s just very foolish to predict any of these youngsters to break into the team, we have had three youth players in the last 30 years to do so. Owen, Sterling and Rio, meanwhile more than a hundred have failed. Those three mentioned also did not start to play regularly until they were above 17, Abe has no chance except maybe that 3 minute cameo sometime late in the season. These players are so underdeveloped physically that you would ruin them if you played them against men week in week out, that know that they can play through them with a bit of physicality. It´s the only reason for example why Rio did not get more gametime this season, he might be skillful enough for the league but he needs to mature physically.
Then Danns and Bajcetic have lost 3 years of development already, they have not played football for so long that they are not gonna get into the team. Both players need to step down and get gametime somewhere else. There is no room for charity cases at this level.

@hightownhope i understand what notorious is getting at.. but my original reply was to nil when he stated that the senior players will be missing most of preseason… so i suggested we would get a chance to see some of the youngsters getting more game time.
Its not only about playing for the first team or helping the squad weve had so many youngsters come through that have played or been sold for good profit… sep van der berg, harry wilson, neko williams, rhian brewster, fabio carvalho, dominic solanke, keeper sold to leicster, ben doak, quanshah, harvey elliot, etc.

hightown, they all started around 18 not 16 or 17… The only three players to be knocking on the first team´s door are those three. I don´t think it helps a player to start too early in the first team even if he got the skill to be there, they are just too young. You saw how Owen burned out early, Sterling is popping balloons on the highway as we speak and playing for a team in Holland and not doing a good job even there. There is hardly a 17 year old in the world that last past 26 years as a footballer before they retire in one way or the other. We almost ruined Gerrard to start with when he had to have his back operation. We ruined Bajcetic by playing him too early against men. There is a huge difference from a tackle from someone built like Milner and Bajcetic. Milner would run through him and not even notice him spinning in the air before he got the ball.

There is actually a fourth one in Nyoni 😉 but right now Gerrard had more games than him at the same stage, even if Nyoni got more experience in Europe. Gerrard had his breakout season at 18, I doubt he got more than 500 minutes the season before that. As the previous season he was getting subbed on late in most of his games. Owen had broken through into the first team, Sterling had as well at 17. Then our team is much stronger than back then, way stronger, we should not be relying on anyone in that age category. I wanna give Rio all the minutes he can get but I don´t wanna rely on him as a starter for two games in a row once next season.
