From what I’ve seen, and what I said back in December, this all comes down to the transition and the training methods.
Klopp had the team playing at 100mph. Slot has them at 30mph, with long stretches of 20mph “safe zones.” Nobody can deny that drop‑off, and it’s exactly why I was furious that we didn’t push on and absolutely smash the league for a few months. I was told to keep quiet, but here we are.
Now the players themselves are starting to say it. Mo, as I said, kicked off not just for himself but for everyone. Mac Allister has publicly shown his frustration. VVD has hinted at it. Robbo too.
I’ve also said before that the rate of change was far too fast, my “fire‑sale” comment (and i wont re-visit that debate). You can’t strip a squad down to the bones and expect no dissent. Players form bonds. Nunez and Elliott were highly regarded internally. Quansah and Doak were seen as big future pieces. Diaz kept that South American core alive. They ripped out the heart of the squad, changed the tactics, and moved to a frankly boring style of play. Is it any wonder it’s failing?
Call me cynical, but I think this goes back to the Edwards/Klopp era and possibly Edwards holding a grudge and wanting to pursue the vision he originally had when Klopp arrived. There were plenty of disagreements over signings, Klopp won those battles, and Edwards walked.
Edwards and Hughes haven’t nailed the manager appointment (maybe Slot fits their idea, I don’t know), and the signings haven’t been right either. Ekitike and Isak? It should’ve been one or the other, plus a winger. But again, what is the vision? What are the tactics supposed to be?
Edwards and Hughes are the ones directing the football side, (mostly Hughes) and shaping the style and long‑term path of the team. So if Slot isn’t delivering that, why haven’t they stepped in and told him to change?
The bigger issue is longer the senior players are forced to play this slow, lifeless stuff, the less chance there is of them ever getting back to what made them great. And honestly, why would they even want to?

4th January 2026 at 11:26 am #235392When we sold Diaz I (wrongly) assumed we would play with wingbacks providing the width and a 4 diamond midfield therefore we didn’t need a replacement.
So does he need replacing? We need Slot replacing first. If we get Alonso (told he’s no 1 choice) and he reverts to what served him well at Leverkusen then no we don’t need to replace him.
For Slots tactics someone like Wirtz is probably as good as you’ll get, but that doesn’t mean I agree with it. Oddly I think Elliot would also shine on the other wing. Someone like Semenyo wouldn’t be suitable.
No point say this player or that player is better without the context of the system and role they will play in.

4th January 2026 at 11:36 am #235394Moonster @ 11:22, in full agreement there. If players are instructed to be ‘economical’ in applying themselves physically, you’d think there would be less chance of injuries being inflicted.
It’s a pertinent point of these players trying to transition from Klopp to Slot in ‘ways of working’. I’ve seen this outside football in work places when a new Manager comes in and wants to change things. It doesn’t always sit well with players initially, but over time, they’d find their way through and grow into it.
Time will tell as far as this season goes ultimately how we will fare.

4th January 2026 at 11:42 am #235395So under slot we dont need a new left winger to replace diaz… thank you. I can now take “left winger” out of whats needed in January.
We are not gonna replace slot anytime soon. He can change it all around very quickly… he might not win the league, but i will only concede once its mathematically impossible for us to have no silverware for this season. He deserves the full season, unless his position becomes untenable ie we are 16th out of the champions league and fa cup, players are fighting and the dressing room is totally lost.
Btw i agree with you about elliot. He can at least cross and lift the fucking ball… heaven knows how these guys made it to a professional level(irony is i couldnt cross to save my life). Get him back and use him on the right wing instead of cheisa.

4th January 2026 at 11:46 am #235396Agree 3ps @ 11:26. Good logic unearthed from this alternative blueprint model.
As we know it, we were used to seeing a wide man. It appears the cloth as been cut differently to make out we don’t need a Diaz or a wide man, but that means positioning our ‘grid’ as narrow and if that’s taking away that particular dimension, we effectively limit ourselves.
Now, has this alternative design been chosen intentionally or is it purely adapting to circumstance, this is the question. We could go for a Rodrygo type of player in the Summer.
From what I saw of Semenyo last night, he was like a box-to-box and somebody that would compliment both Grav and Macca.

As I’ve said Asian you’re a very difficult person to have an intelligent conversation with because you look at things through what I perceive as a very blinkered viewpoint.
How about you just skip my posts and I yours and i will engage with others instead?
Nil, Semenyo is a wide player, not sure what you mean by a box to box or complimenting our existing central midfielders. Or a refence to Keita made earlier. He can play either wing or if desperate up top.

4th January 2026 at 1:12 pm #2354113ps from what I saw of yesterday’s match, Semenyo at one time tracked back to win the ball in midfield. I wouldn’t cast him as solely a wide player which is a testament to him and something that appealed to me.

4th January 2026 at 2:01 pm #235426I don´t think you are that cynical moonster, I think Edwards came back with a point to prove and now that Klopp is gone nobody can stand up to him. Like correct me if I am wrong but I seem to remember Edwards and Klopp not seeing eye to eye on Nunez and Isak, Nunez was the player Klopp wanted and got, Isak was the player Edwards wanted at the time. Furthermore I believe both Edwards and Hughes can find good players but neither one has any team building experience. They were perfectly fine with ripping out the guts of the team this summer, then we got 7-8 players out of contract in 2027. If we don´t sign a new centerback this month we will start next season with only Van Dijk and Gomez cause Konate will probably be gone. Leoni will be back but I don´t wanna pin my hopes on a 20 year old kid coming back from major injury. This rebuild is far from over.

Im pretty sure julian ward was in charge when we signed nunez and diaz! He was one of the driver s for buying a lot of the south American players.. maybe even had a say in mac alister too!

4th January 2026 at 3:13 pm #235479Nunez was done under Edwards, Ward and Klopp tenure i believe and I think it was the straw that broke the partnership.

4th January 2026 at 3:19 pm #235482Moonster, I think most people too exception to your fire sale comments was because you were angling it towards FSG losing interest in the club or even looking to sell. I think you mentioned the phase assest stripping a few times. But look at who we sold, only Diaz was a first team player and has been discussed extensively already. Nunez just isn’t elite level and needed to be sold for everyone’s sake, Elliot is a good player but is Liverpool his level? Likeable lad but hasn’t made it at Villa either, didn’t play much for us and general concenus was he should be sold for his career. Likewise Quansah who seems to be doing well in a lower league.
Regarding the tactic change last season I’ll admit I got this wrong. I sae the change to a slower pace but assumed wrongly it was to save legs and prevent injuries for the 25/26 season. Didn’t envisage it was part of the Slot transition.
I remember a few of us moaning about slow starts (Slot tactic) and then reverting to a higher intensity when we needed a goal (Klopps tactics). Again I was wrong, I thought he was some sort of tactical genius who used the slow period to determine weaknesses etc before going for it.

A) Julian ward was sports director and in charge of all transfer.
B) Michael Edwards had already given his notice a year earlier that he was gonna leave in 2022.. long before nunez was signed!

5th January 2026 at 1:24 pm #235722I never really understood the Quansah sale. I know that he got criticised on here (well TT) at times last season, but I thought that he had got all the attributes to be a great CB. He is still only 22 – and CBs don’t reach their peak ability until mid–> late 20s. He’s a regular for Leverkusen who are 3rd in Bundesliga and a regular in the England squad. OK, we got 30 million (?) for him – which is a good price – but I’d have favoured hanging onto him as a really good young prospect.

5th January 2026 at 1:27 pm #235723Slot didn’t fancy him so he was gone.
I did not like the way he was treated.
Subbing a young centrehalf off at halftime when the team were doing ok was only ever gonna hurt the lads confidence._____________________________

5th January 2026 at 2:31 pm #235743Regarding quanshah, we do have a buyback clause. So if he does great, which by the sounds of it, is the case, we will get him back. We also did acquire leoni who is also held in high regards by everyone in italy, its very unfortunate that he did his acl in his first game!

5th January 2026 at 2:38 pm #235747I hadn’t remembered about Quansah’s buy-back clause, but it’s at £51 million in 18 month’s time. Well, I guess it’s better to have it than not have it, but it would be a big chunk of dosh to find in a window where our priorities may have changed and we’ll have our transfer budget directed at other elements of the team.
