      Correct Nil.
The left sided fullbacks used to provide the width.
They now tend to invert killing the space for the wide attacker.
That’s a tactical decision, not a personnel issue.

Most teams came to the conclusion 5 – 10 years ago that it was a waste of a wide attacker’s good foot to play them on the wing that enabled them to hit deep crosses from the touchline and it was better use of their asset to play them on the opposite wing and get more rewards via more direct goal threats. That said, any wide attacker who can cross the ball with their weaker foot is a great asset as there won’t be the same predictability that you get from the likes of Gakpo who is essentially a one-trick pony from the right flank. Salah hardly ever trusted a cross with his right foot but would occasionally manufacture something with the outside of his left foot – just to keep the fullback guessing from time to time. I agree with Ginger that Diaz hardly ever hit the touchline and delivered a left footed cross, although his general play from the left flank was much more varied and elusive than anything that Gakpo serves up.

Salah was the top playmaker in the league last season and not even on set pieces, I just spent the last half an hour watching highlights of both Diaz and Gakpo from last season, the only thing that surprised me watching those highlights is how brave Diaz is and how many headers he actually scored for us.

He is scoring with his head, his right and his left foot, taking on players and not just cutting inside. Making the field bigger and getting more players involved in the build up and taking out more of the opposition.

Red ginger is the only one talking about a pure bred winger here, that´s some misconception of his… Like I´ve been saying we need a Downing on the wing or Beckham in best case. I simple do not like watching Gakpo on the left wing as he is a one dimensional pony. I did not see a good goal from him scored with his left foot, not a single one. It´s always cutting inside and putting that shot in, some of his goals are even bad crosses that just went in with nobody connecting with the ball because of panic from the keeper.

Diaz also interchanged with the whole frontline, he was playing as a false nine, going on the right even on a couple of occasions. You can see him having a good understanding with Nunez, Jota, Salah. You can even see us attacking as a 424 on occasions with him in the lineup. Gakpo just infuriates me as a player, I feel like he should be so much better than the one dimensional creature he is. Diaz was so brave and always available on the counter, the only thing I saw Gakpo do on the counter was winning possession and cutting inside with the ball inside own half.

So many brave headers from Diaz, you should take a look at his goal reel on youtube for us. Plenty good goals, amazing goals, amazing moments.

He was infuriating to you, I will give you that, to me he never stopped trying beating the opposition, even repeatedly. He might have lost possessions quite a few times but that is what good forwards need to do, you never saw him putting his shoulders down and jogging back for the ball on the other hand. Which is something Gakpo is guilty of doing, there is no urgency to his game even when he loses possession.

He pushed for a new contract or a move and understandably so, I don´t get it why the club did not reward a player for his success with the club for once? Cause if anyone was deserving a new contract it was him, I´m pretty sure he would have signed a 200k contract here if offered one sooner, even a 150k contract if it had happened sooner. His market value would have been secured as well for the next 4-5 years at double the value we got for him. He has got 20 goals and assists in his last 20 games for Bayern. They are scary force this season in the Champions League, I can see them going for the trophy, they got everything in that side of theirs.

Good Post Red Herring at 2:30. Admittedly, I don’t understand the concept of invert and the benefits this offers.

Having somebody overlapping can pull-apart opposition defensives opening space where it’s needed. Gakpo in example of his copy-cat patterns of cutting inside and crossing is easily sussed out by opposition.

His existing contact took him heading towards his 31st birthday.
They didn’t want to sign him to longer as he got older past that age.
He didnt want to see his contract out, he wanted Barca, they couldn’t afford him, so he went to Bayern.

I bear him no ill will.
I wish he seen out his contract or he was replaced adequately.

No mate, he is 28 years old, would have been a free agent after this year on a 75k contract at the top level, that would have made him the most undervalued player on the market. We only sold him for money!!! It´s a big change of dynamics at the club where we sell a player entering into his prime instead of rewarding him for success. It´s a very bad omen for the future and I hope it´s a one of as we have never done it before under the current owners. They have never sold a player entering into his prime unless its a Suarez or Coutinho type of deal. Very bad omen!!!

So you think diaz moved to Bayern for the same wage?? Compared to what we were paying him its a substantial increase. The simple fact is diaz was one of the best left sided wingers in world football… but we didnt value him or his demands! He is one of many reasons we are where we are today… he needs to be replaced “simples”, unless you think wirtz is doing a better job?

                            SERIOUSLY… heres a catalyst to
Liverpools fortunes for the past 3 seasons, a player that played whilst his family was kidnapped, came back from a serious knee injury, always tried to make himself available even after arriving a day before from a gruelling flight, gave 💯 with the ball and without the ball… a model pro in every sense! If you find him infuriating.. heaven knows what you must think of every player playing at lfc today?

He had 2yrs left on his contract which took him to the summer of 2027.
That would put him heading towards his 31st birthday.
He turn 29 in about 10 days.
As Threeps rightly points out his low wage was debunked.
He’s now on circa £230k at Bayern, a significant increase to what he was actually earning at Liverpool.

A lot if argument going on about this player and that player, but what you’ll seem to have missed is its fairly possible in light of the signings, that Slot wouldnt have played Diaz.
Diaz had pace and trickery…and these arent traits Slot is into, as we know, Slot ball is slow and ponderous, more of a Gakpo style.
Currently, the style doesn’t fit the players and vice versa, personally id have given Diaz the money.

Yeah he went from 140k to around 200k. I’m guessing he wanted around that from us and we said no for a player of his age and talent. He’s good on his day but he’s not always on his day. And no idea why Bingo thought he provided width.

Do I think Wirtz is doing better? See this is why it pointless discussing things with you, you always see everything individually, which is a very simple understanding of how the game works. The whole team is underperforming this season and for reasons I’ve explained and you’ve dismissed. You cannot compare Wirtz this season to Diaz last season, it’s not apples for apples.

Generally speaking Wirtz is regarding as the far superior player, one that Bayern were desperate to buy long before Diaz and for much more money.

I think Diaz would struggle big time in this Slot tactic. His intensity would be nullified and he was never a tippy tappy player, far too direct for Slot.

It’s well known he wanted Barca for a long time with his father actively trying to pimp his son to them. Shame for Diaz Barca are skint.

Moonster, personally I am wholeheartedly glad Posters have picked up and unearthed that conversation. Put the disagreements to one side, but I find it insightful. Lol be different if it was an engine of a car as I would need beyond a Hayes Manual! 😀

Joking to one side, this strikes me clearly the thought of this season should have took place last season and vice versa (you’d think!) as a ‘free hit’ for Slot.

The reality is though, Klopp handed over a Team that Slot inherited that actually took us to Glory. This is the season though effectively of deconstruction in transition and this-that-the other.

There’s a slight similarity to when Alex Ferguson left United. He signed Van Persie, but was also carrying an ageing squad. It was enough though to take them to Title 20. What David Moyes inherited though was became an illusion as it was end of one era and beginning one a new one with lots of players reaching to the point of the end in their careers.

Ever since, they’ve experienced different instances one after the other and I don’t think due to the amount of change in frequency there’s been a firm hand on a proper rebuild.

Klopp had a good 8 years and was allowed to rebuild. We need to make sure if Slot leaves that we choose a SUITABLE CANDIDATE to replace him and INVEST PROPERLY in him; ALLOW him to properly rebuild and develop and that he harnesses into ‘the Liverpool way’.

So thats the reason why slot went against the board for selling him? So he can put him on the bench?

The simple question was.. do we need a left winger or not? Or will wirtz suffice? I dont need you to sound like a politician or compare apples and oranges… i say we do, what do you say?

@ginger its a double edged sword… we sold a player in his prime that when available made us title contenders… yes if we didnt sell we would have lost him for nought… but salahs 33 and still had an amazing season at 32… we’ve probably sacrificed a player that might have helped with more silverware and money for the club… probably.. but we’ll never know! Personally we need to move on as hes gone.
