Onto yet another tough match and an opponent unbeaten in the league and riding high at the top of the Turkish Super Liga. Their only defeat this season in any competition was a right good tonking at Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 in their opening CL game. Players to watch out for are Osimhen, Sane, Yilmaz and Icardi. Gundogan also signed for them this summer from City.
Mixed results against this lot previously having played them four times before, winning one, drawing two and losing one. The last time was almost 20 years ago when they beat us 3-2 at the Ataturk in the group phase. Fowler bagged both our goals that night. We did beat them at Anfield though three months prior by the same score with us racing into a 3-0 lead (Crouch 2 and Garcia) only to see them pull two back (that sounds familiar).
No clue who will start this or what the score will be. Expecting to see Frimpong, Gomez, Rio, Jones and Robbo to get a run out. No Chiesa, despite being registered. Oh, balls to it…
Alisson, Frimpong, Gomez, VVD, Robbo, Grav, Jones, Szobo, Gakpo, Ekitike and Mo.
There will be goals in this for both sides and can see it going the same way as the Eindhoven game last season. 2-2 or 3-2 for someone.

29th September 2025 at 7:12 pm #227599Very disappointing if chiesa was just not brought. I think there has to be a logical reason. He deserves a run out
We will concede so its how many we wcore will determine the result
Oshimen battered us a few years ago

29th September 2025 at 9:13 pm #227603Chiesa not only deserves to play (in place of Mo in my opinion), but he should also play as heβs our best attacker right now. Maybe with Ekitike.

30th September 2025 at 7:04 am #227611Right, no more stupid experiments from Slot, Wirtz is a No. 10, leave it at that.
Now let’s win here, and without much drama. Some rotation is in order, to keep the team fresh. And Ekitike to show us how it’s supposed to be done.
Alisson
Frimpong KonatΓ© Van Dijk Robbo
Gravenberch Szoboszlai
Salah Wirtz Gakpo

30th September 2025 at 7:29 am #227616He was a no 10 even when ‘on the left’. That wasn’t the issue.

30th September 2025 at 7:58 am #227619No he wasn’t, it didn’t work out, was a total failure and I don’t want to see Wirtz play on the left again, unless when we’re winning comfortably.
Only put wingers like Gakpo or Ngumoha on the left. Or even a versatile attacker like Chiesa, or even Ekitike.

30th September 2025 at 8:03 am #227622Wirtz’s heatmap vs Palace. Doesn’t look like he’s on the left much. Think Ginger mentioned this during the match thread.

30th September 2025 at 8:54 am #227625Apparently we tried to play a 4222 on Saturday.
It failed miserably.
Wirtz didnt play off the left, he was very much central.
We virtually abandoned our left hand side particularly in the first half.
Ive no idea why we tried to play this against Palace, it played straight into their hands.A return to 4231 is required for this game tonight.
It’ll be interesting what Slot does at right back._____________________________

30th September 2025 at 9:13 am #227628We are lacking width and as you said Ginger that played into Palace’s hands. It’s a common theme this season which is the worry. Either provide it with full backs, for which ours seems to underlap into an already congested area, or instruct the wide players to stay or at least spend more time out wide.
I’m for the full backs to provide width as we have the perfect ones for that and keeps our goal scoring wide players closer to the goal Wirtz can still operate in either AML if we sacrifice the goalscoring AML or his usual AMC as the playmaker. It’s all too intricate and slow and spreading the opposion defence will help that.
And whoever plays CM meed to know that one should stay back and be concerned of the counter, especially if our full backs are high and wide.

30th September 2025 at 10:20 am #227631Yes, it does all seem a bit strange that our wide forward players will statistically cut inside more as this will take them onto their better foot as has been the trend for circa 10 years now. But the received wisdom was always that this has to be in combination with overlapping fullbacks providing the width on their good foot. So, it doesn’t seem to make sense to have our fullbacks underlapping (cutting inside – not outside) with such regularity. But, what do I know? …..just a (mainly) armchair fan versus a team of professional tacticians and analysts.

30th September 2025 at 2:10 pm #227644Wirtz did start on the left initially but soon kept drifting central. Don’t know if this was tactical to create space for Kerkez or he just naturally kept migrating there. Either way it was a mess and it didn’t work.

30th September 2025 at 5:29 pm #227653Slot needs to puck a midfield 3 out of macca, writz, grav and szobo. Grav and szobo play as in form. Macca is not playing well so its writz for me.
Sat he tried to fit them all in
Osihmen v konate is the worry. For such a big man he can het bullied.
We need a good performance and not hust turn up for 20/25 mins

30th September 2025 at 6:21 pm #227655Away in Turkey is always pretty hostile. If we can pick up 3 points tonight it’ll be a really good indicator of how they can pick themselves up after defeat.

30th September 2025 at 6:52 pm #227662In the tried and tested tradition of Teamtalks “I was right” when it comes to team sheets, I was almost right. Only Gakpo for Isak the difference. Wonder if it means a 4 midfield diamond? Or is a midfielder playing AMR?
