I may have mentioned before (not name dropping here, don’t care about that), but one of my dearest friends here in North TX is connected to both teams and has fond memories of this competition. He is, the one, the only, Mr Jimmy Melia.
I meet Jimmy once a month for coffee near his home in North Dallas and it’s always a joyous occasion, telling brutally funny stories of his playing career with Liverpool of course, Wolverhampton (pits of the earth he calls that place and he is 100% correct) and Soton plus his managerial career notably with the team we play this weekend.
I’ve shared humourously with Jimmy that he ruined my week once, back in early 1983 as a 12-year-old lad sat next to my old school pal and his Dad at Anfield (our first ever Sunday game btw!) excited at what should be a stroll in the park against bottom of the league in the 5th round of this competition. Our team was stacked. Grobs, Neal, Kennedy, Hanse, Dalglish, Souness, Rush et al. Brighton, though, had talent, former old boys Jimmy Case (oh how I would love to have Case and Souness in this current squad), Michael Robinson, Steve Foster, Gary Stevens, to name but a few.
We started off well enough, but about 25 mins or so in, up pops Gerry Ryan to put them one up. I said my mate I don’t like the feel of this and low and behold midway through the second half, written in the stars, yet another ex-player to bag one against, Jimmy Case put them two up. I knew that was that then. But, Craig Johnstone gave us hope pulling one back and then the entire ground expected Mr Reliable, Phil Neal to make it 2-2 from the spot and he missed and that was that. Even Jimmy remarked that he said to his assistant, let’s get the draw and get them back home before Neal took it (as he fully expected him to stick it in). Jimmy got a standing ovation donned in his white shoes (which he still has). Good times.
The last time we played Brighton at home in the FA Cup was again, in the 5th round, 14 years ago when we ran out 6-1 winners.
Who will start?
Mama, Gomez, Konate, VVD, Kerkez, Grav, Jones, Sobo, Wirtz, Mo and Chiesa.
Liverpool 2 Brighton 1

13th February 2026 at 7:29 pm #239401Can we afford to go so strong with CL qualification hanging like a thread?
I donβt see any reason why Jones and Szobo canβt start.
Will Gomez being our only viable right back?
Our chances of qualification will rely heavily of Wirtz and Ekitike. A med/long term injury to either and we are screwed._____________________________

13th February 2026 at 7:50 pm #239402I think it has to be a pragmatic team but one that is enough to beat Brighton. Another defeat would undo all the good from midweek.
We don’t play for 8 days following this so I think Slot will go 75% strong and keep his fingers crossed no-one goes down. Haven’t much choice in some areas.

14th February 2026 at 2:18 am #239405Good shout Sean. Ekitike’s fitness an odd issue but he’s not the only one. Forgot to mention in my pre-gamer but expecting Dunk (no goals this season), Welbeck (scored 2 in 3 months) and Mitoma (just 2 goals all season) to cause (predictable) issues. They’ve only won once in in the league in two and a half months but did beat United at Old Trafford to get to the 4th round. They’ll be up for this as Hurzeler is under a lot of pressure. Extra time would not surprise me.

14th February 2026 at 7:08 am #239406This is a must win game, so let’s win it easily, and even give all five of our subs a run out here.
Szobo starts at right back, as Gomez is our only backup at CB, so can’t risk him here, and Szobo is fresh anyway after his suspension.
Alisson
Szoboszlai KonatΓ© Van Dijk Kerkez
Gravenberch Jones
Salah Wirtz Gakpo

14th February 2026 at 9:40 am #239408Some rotation might be in order with Jones and possibly Gomez, Chiesa or Ngumoha starting.
But considering the importance of this cup (this season), and the fact that we’ve got 8 days off until the next league game, I don’t think Slot will rotate much – though I’d like to see all 5 subs get some game time.
Also, I forgot about Marmadashvilli, so I’d start him instead of Allison, in a revision to my original lineup.

14th February 2026 at 10:31 am #239413In terms of importance, the FA Cup is at the lowest priority level for Liverpool this season. Thatβs not to say we should abandon it completely but we must adjust accordingly.
Not qualifying for the CL next season could have serious consequences-
We become less attractive to potential new managers
We become less attractive to potential new players
There are serious financial implications which can then affect spending.
We become less attractive for those we want to extend their deals.
Amongst many others._____________________________

14th February 2026 at 11:47 am #239416Yes the 8 day break going forward is a big bonus however this will be the 3rd game in a week and with one recognised right back and central attacker we need to be careful.

14th February 2026 at 11:56 am #239417This is a must win game, if we lose this game we got nothing to play for the rest of the season

14th February 2026 at 12:50 pm #239418This our least important game of the nrxt few weeks
We have 12 pl games to get into top 4/5 and we are still in the cl. Would love a good positive performance and result to build momentum but totally disagree its our most important game. Forest next week is much more important.

14th February 2026 at 1:02 pm #239420Song, agree mate. This is a must-win game. In fact, all games are must-win. No more draws or any of that nonsense. This should be settled too in 90 minutes and there shouldn’t really be any excuses for tiredness etc.
I don’t really as such mind who’s selected just as long as it’s a line up strong enough to beat Brighton. We don’t want to get them any sniff of confidence that they can turn us over on our own soil.

14th February 2026 at 1:15 pm #239421Most important target, above all else, this season, is obviously to qualify for the CL.
But today’s game is also important, because we must try to win the FA Cup, as long as it DOES NOT impact our league form – which today’s game clearly doesn’t, because we’ve got 8 days until the next game.
Plus it gives the squad players some valuable game time. Now let’s do it.

14th February 2026 at 1:44 pm #239422Check this out: The gap in millions isn’t too distance, but you’re right, we need to aim really to qualify for CL. The way it’s looking at the mo, it’s more Europa.

14th February 2026 at 3:42 pm #239424If we drop out of the cup our whole season depends on the champions league, we should finish in the top four no matter what but if we can’t get past Brighton in the FA cup we are not getting through over a two legged tie against a better side in Europe.
So im thinking it will be close to our strongest lineup except Mama will be in goal. Robbo will also probably play.

14th February 2026 at 4:48 pm #239425Burnley losing at home to Mansfield, who are halfway down League One. The former drew 1-1 at Anfield. Hope Burnley get relegated. Wankers.

14th February 2026 at 5:35 pm #239426All games are must win, just some are more must win than others. This doesnt fit into that category.
So we must win it, just not as much must as the league games we have.
Hope that’s clear.
