Now, see if we can get a debate going….
I think we would all agree we would like a bit more consistancy with regards to decisions, no debate there, but how would we get consistancy?
To use the very recent DVD disallowed goal, whereby Robertson was standing in an offside position (nobody can doubt that!) but did bring up the grey area of was he interfering with play by ducking under the ball (again, nobody can doubt he had to duck otherwise the ball would have hit him).
Personally, I think being that close to the ball he needed to move, and standing in an offside position, the correct call was made.
But while we have the grey area of who/where/why/what gets to make the decision under the who/where/why/what parameters we are never going to get consistancy as it literally depends on the mood of the man in black at that moment of time.
The only way you will get consistancy is to make the rules black and white.
If you are offside, you are offside. Doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re doing, you’re offside. Rule is now black and white. Would we prefer black and white rules or the current confusing crop of grey rules which are very much open to interpretation and whether it’s his time of the month?
Personally, I would like more black and white rules….

11th November 2025 at 12:06 pm #230561What if the ball hits a player who is in the penalty area with his arm unnaturally in the air? Is that a penalty or not? I think it is*, but many weirdly don’t. If it’s black a white then all handballs are fouls or none at all. Even blasts from point blank range to a hand by the side.
Football needs decision making. We just need better decision makers.
*Especially if only after 20 seconds in a major cup final.

11th November 2025 at 2:18 pm #230568Personally preferred it when the referee had to make a decision in the moment. It was a lot more natural and it really helped with the ebb and flow of the game. It built excitement and passion and resentment and anger – but that was the emotional rollercoaster of football. When it came to the big decisions the ref had to take onboard all of the atmosphere from the stands, the appeals from the players as well as judging from his own eyes. It was a lot of pressure and sometimes the ref got it wrong but the game moved on.
There are some rules that are black and white and some rules open to interpretation but i think that was all ok when the buck stopped with the referee. Sure he got abuse and if he made a real clanger he’d be dropped for a game or 2 – but generally most people respected his decisions during the game. With regards to consistency i’m not sure we ever really had any. Apart from the fact that mistakes were made every game that was the only thing that was consistent. But we accepted them with the “ahh they probably even themselves out over the course of the season” principal that everyone seemed to live by. It at least caused a bit of jeopardy. Now you have perfectly good goals ruled out for offside by a toe – it was never supposed to be like that because the game was always meant to give the advantage to the attacker.

11th November 2025 at 2:57 pm #2305703p’s, the thing about penos, for me at any rate, is they shouldn’t be given simply because of an offense in the box, let along arguing about the letter of the law. I won’t refer specifically to case you mention 😉 for the sake of debate, and we certainly could argue about the letter of the law being appplied, but I don’t think we would be in disagreement about any actual goal scoring opportunity being denied.
Isn’t something like 90% of penos’ successfully converted? No wonder every player and his dog are effected by different laws of gravity when they cross that white line.
You can have a player heading towards the goal but outside the box chopped and have a clear goal scoring opportunity denied, and you can also have a player going in the opposite direction and zero chance of scoring fall over and win a pen, we’ve all seen both happen.
Along with scrapping VAR, I would love to see the rules about Peno’s totally changed too.

11th November 2025 at 3:01 pm #230571With regards to handball, I’m very quite happy with the “hand to ball” or “ball to hand” rule… if the player has no idea its hit his hand then you certainly can’t give a peno for it… but if there is even a hint of “hand to ball” then yes…
And yes, if a defender is blocking a shot with his arms flaying like an octopus, then it’s a peno, that’s the goalies job!!

11th November 2025 at 3:18 pm #230572Regular group meetings, ideally weekly. If the Refs can try and adhere to the ruling from the same hymn sheet, we can then drive consistency.
