Wow, the send off changed everything. Good to see Nkunku score the vital 2nd, the next two a result of them pushing forward. What a relief. Gusto though, a disaster and can’t even pass the ball to his own side. I counted at least 4 misplaced passes that put us under unnecessary pressure and, of course the penalty BUT I think that was unfortunate to be fair to him. Last season he played miles better. Maybe time to move him on. Anyway the best side overall won this match. On to the quarters and Palmeiras and Estรชvรฃo Willian. These South American teams go for the full 90 minutes and are used to the weather conditions so this will be tough. Win It then City likely awaits.

I did not know the extra time started thatqโ€™ quickly. I took a shower but after that checking my cell: the extra Time had commenced and they had a red card. Nkunku goal was scrappy but we do need goals like that

Still a very good result under very difficult circumstances. However i still have reservations about some players, plus we have way too many players let’s see how they go and who will go.

How can we have the world cup there with weather conditions like that.
I thought the penalty was harsh.
Once they equalised I thought game over for us, until the red card.
Sanchez still worries me and Gusto less said.
He has the potential, we saw it last season.
Gutted the next game is at 2am BST, cant even record it. Its not on channel 5 here in the UK.

1994 World Cup in USA. Nothing like this weather. Global warming is real.

Thiago Silva, what a player. 40 yrs old marshalling Fluminenseโ€™s defense. And won against Inter, a clean sheet. I am wondering whether we let him go too quickly

Well that’s it for Manchester City and while still just hopeful, looks a more realistic opportunity for Chelsea to go deeper into this competition now, maybe, who knows, even the final. I think we all know the other side of the draw is ominous whatever team progresses BUT how good would it be to make that final for us Chelsea supporters? Maybe that Johnny Minerals dude might even mellow a little and give some credit. Still plenty of work to do to get to that final and the next hurdle will be tough. Palmeiras first in the Quarters then, if successful the winner of Fluminense and Al Hilal in the semi final.

The likes of PSG, Bayern, Real Madrid, Juventus and Dortmund battling the other side of the draw to Chelsea so if we made the final the class of opponent likely too much for us – oh wait a minute 2012, Bayern on their home pitch, I guess nothing is impossible!! Nah, joking, our class of 2012 would destroy our current outfit. A final against any of the above could be a tad embarrassing for our guys at this stage of their development. Likely I’d be watching from behind the couch in trepidation.

Homerjay540 WC 1994 despite the heat (and this was to accomodate viewers in Europe the matches started early afternoon), I donโ€™t recall storms like this time.

I watched City – Al Hilal only the extra time but boy, it was a really entertaining match. For me this CWC really exceeds my expectation despite I was being sceptical at the beginning. Al Hilal IMO played much better than City in the extra time. They were organized, every pass was meaningful. So far Europe isnโ€™t that superior with teams from Brazil & now from Saudi Arabia reached the QF.

Chelsea have a chance to beat Palmeiras. I expect Maresca to learn from our defeat against Flamengo

Chelsea v Palmeiras 11am Saturday Sydney time โ€“ brilliant!! That is also good for the guys as it is an evening kick off so hopefully helps with heat issues. No doubt the heat would come in to play later on in the match and favour the Brazilians. We are blessed the side of the draw we are on and how it panned out. We are now some sort of a hope progressing to a final at which stage I have already conceded defeat. Sort of an empty feeling in that respect BUT the experience of being in this invaluable moving forward.

Palmeiras by no means are pushover. But if we can win this QF, I think we’ll go to the final. Fluminense and Al Hilal are not bad but they are not superb teams either. Fluminense, the key is our own Thiago Silva and their 44 years old GK, their defense is tight. Their attack for me isn’t impressive. Al Hilal IMO the key is the coach Inzaghi who outsmarted Xabi & then Pep Guardiola. But both teams have old players, despite their experience, that can run out of gaz in this kind of long tournament.

Against Botafogo, Palmeiras were the better team. I think they will be a tough opponent for us. They have creative players and they can score goals. It will be a tough match for sure. We struggled against Flamengo but Maresca rotated quite a lot in that match. This match we should go full force. I prefer Delap than Jackson as our starting no:9 but Jackson returns from suspension is a bonus too.

Caicedo a massive loss for this match, possibly a result defining issue. Surely Lavia assuming he is fit and ready to go must start with Enzo in mid field and James at right back but I have a feeling he might do the unforgiveable and stick James there to supposedly shore up the mid field and stick Gusto at right back. Also I have a feeling he will go with Badiashile from the start. If so we are in for a rough ride. I am really worried about this match and our chance of progression. The amount of vital work Caicedo does match after match, well somebody else has to do a similar job. Can they? Maybe not.

Actually, Gusto at right back isn’t bad at all, especially if he isn’t asked to invert into midfield. Heโ€™s an orthodox right back who likes to run up and down the flank. If Maresca plays to his strengths, I think he can be very effective. With Delap up front now, Gusto’s crosses will be valuable.

Caicedo is a big loss, but this time off will do him good as he gets some much-needed rest. Fernandez and Lavia create a balanced midfield, with one sitting back and the other joining the attack.

Iโ€™m curious to see what Joรฃo Pedro brings to the team. I hope we donโ€™t sacrifice part of Palmerโ€™s game by confining him to the wing permanently, as that would limit his impact.

Now that Badiashile is likely out, why canโ€™t Maresca continue playing Tosin Colwill at the heart of our defense? Iโ€™d also like to see a dribbler in this match, and Madueke fits that role perfectly. I would choose him over Neto.

I don’t want to be the new Chris451 (where is Chris by the way???) but we should be in the final given the route and opposition. We have to think and believe like a big team. Otherwise we fall into a doom spiral of ‘we’re in transition’ and then accept mediocrity each year, and chase the Conference League and Cup competitions.

chelsea1967: From Maresca’s press conference, it looks like Lavia is not at 100% sure. A small muscular issue. If he is fit, for sure he will start. If not, I guess Maresca will need to make an interesting choice between trusting the new guys Andrey Santos or Essugo directly into the starting 11 or to use James as a defensive midfielder. I would like to see Santos though in case Lavia is not fit. He is from Brazil, he may be a differential factor for us in this match. Still no matter who starts, I think Caicedo is the best defensive midfielder in the world at the moment.

Wise-fan, IMO Gusto has performed really bad during this tournament. I would prefer starting Reece James as right back and trusting one of Santos or Essugo as defensive midfielder. And I think I would prefer Chalobah instead of Tosin against these agile Brazilian players. Tosin would be too slow IMO.

Personnally I don’t think Joao Pedro should play. He is new, he still needs to understand how Maresca wants the team to play. Moreover Jackson is back from suspension. I prefer Neto than Madueke, all aspects. But in light of the passing of his Portugal team mate Jota, probably Madueke should start tonight and let Neto take any time-off he needs.

Ed de Goey, not sure Chris451 read the post about FootyDebate from chelsea1967 as he hadn’t been commented the last 2 weeks of TeamTalk.

At least he’s starting with Delap and not risking it with the nutcase up front. Here’s hoping guys. Win this and its a semi against Fluminese.

Playing well, Neto really good and best thing for him to be out there at an emotional time for him and play football. Palmer looking more like the player we know, given freedom to express himself and actually looking focused and wanting to be there. Nice goal and I have a feeling there might just be a second coming up. Gusto going well enough. Delap a silly yellow seconds before half time and then questioning it and walking away telling the referee to f off not overly smart which could then have been a str8 red. Second half I reckon Palmeiras will throw everything at us and this really could be a ‘game of two halves’. I hope its more of the same BUT we all know what happens with this current Chelsea. Gusto and Delap carrying yellows not ideal, especially Gusto who, I predict, might have a torrid 2nd half defensively. Palmeiras are still right in this. A quick fire 2nd just after half time and I reckon that would shatter them though as they have only scored 5 so far all tournament but, as the commentator said ALL in the 2nd half of their matches. Let’s ride the boys home fellas. ๐Ÿ™‚

Well they did it. Semi Final looms. Pedro looked excellent and should be an excellent addition to our squad. Bad news of the 2nd half the booking of Colwill who will also miss the semi as will Delap. This two yellow card meaning missing the next match over a run of 5 matches is pretty darn harsh and all the remaining teams have plenty missing as a result. Is that an identical rule in the same format of the Countries World Cup? Quality players missing from the surviving clubs this deep into the competition not ideal at all. Anyway bring on Fluminense in the semi. Centre backs likely Tosin and Chalobah and I say with fear, Jackson gets his chance. I’d rather play a false 9 in his place personally. He’s a loose canon likely to jag a 3rd red inside 6 weeks.
