Barnsley give me the shivers going back to one of those diabolical results we experience from time to time at Anfield. The year was 1997. It wasn’t the best time being a Liverpool fan but we still had some good players. We’d put a decent run together prior to this game, smashing Spurs at home and won in both the UEFA Cup and League Cup. We were expected to beat Barnsley who had already lost 10 matches by November. They’d been recently thumped by Arsenal and conceded seven at Old Trafford. Ashley Ward put them one up, I looked at my mate in the Main Stand and said ‘that’s it’ and it was. Absolute shite. Thing is then and typical of us especially under Uncle Royston, we then go to Highbury and win!
They give me the heeby jeebies also because they won at Anfield in the 5th round 18 years ago. Dirk had put us one up at half time but we ‘allowed’ Barnsley to get back in the game and they eventually (predictably) prevailed winning 2-1.
Back to the game that matters and that’s Monday. Those halcyon days are long gone for our visitors playing their trade now in Division One and currently lie third from bottom. They started off their season in good form with only one defeat in nine but have fallen off a cliff since losing 11. Players to keep an eye on are *Keillor-Dunn, Cleary, Kelly and Connell. I’m expecting their keeper, Murphy Cooper, to have play a blinder too.
*will score.Who will start?
Mama, Frimpong, Gomez, VVD, Robbo, Mac, Jones, Nyoni, Rio, Wirtz and Chiesa. Gakpo could start too especially with his good cup scoring record. Dunno but do know that Slot won’t take this as lightly as the Plymouth match. With how the season how gone thus far, he’ll wanna win this and continue our unbeaten run.
This has all the hallmarks of a shock win. Barnsley will score, I have no doubt in that but think we will prevail…just.
Liverpool 2 Barnsley 1

9th January 2026 at 2:48 pm #236286Slot doesnโt have a history of fielding particularly strong teams in the cups and with our current situation Iโm not sure he will here.
Can see Gomez, Marma, Robbo, Nyoni, Rio, Chiesa as near defos too. Maybe Ramsay. Maybe Jones.
Question marks over Gomez starting though as our only back up for right back and centre back.

9th January 2026 at 2:53 pm #236288Good notes Ginger. Just think the dynamic has changed a tad this season with the way things have gone and Slot may also still be mildly embarrassed/annoyed about that Plymouth result. I think he will go stronger than he did in that dreadful game last season and want to advance further and have a chance of a cup. I agree on Gomez but one of Konate and VVD needs a rest. I think Joe will start.

9th January 2026 at 3:12 pm #236291That Plymouth game must be the worst game ever for Chiesa, a cup game will be a welcomed distraction from the league. We got 3 must win games in a row right now. We need to batter Burnley at Anfield on the 17th, then away game against Bournemouth on the 24th.

9th January 2026 at 3:19 pm #236292I reckon we will see a strong lineup, we got nothing else to compete for, even if we play Marma, Robbo, Van Dijk, Gomez, Ramsey, Jones, Nyoni, Szobo, Ngumoha, Gakpo, Chiesa. I reckon the side will look something like that.

10th January 2026 at 11:00 am #236323Main focus is the league and CL, so let’s rest 8 or 9 of our main players for the next league game.
FA Cup is one for the subs, squad and players needing game time, now let’s win tthis game easily, high scoring and with a clean sheet.
Marmadashvilli
Ramsay Gomez Van Dijk Robbo
Nyoni Jones
Chiesa Wirtz Ngumoha
Ekitike (or Gakpo, if not fit)-

10th January 2026 at 5:00 pm #236373Rob, Top to Toe, I would like you to create a Thread come May. That would be a Cup Final Thread. So for this to happen, I as fan want us to really go for it and apply the right attitude.
City scored 10 and whether it’s Barnsley or any other opposition, I want the same mind set applied.
Love watching the previous of recent years parades on you tube. For that happen, we need to win it. Statement performance is a must otherwise all the good work re Arsenal would feel like it’s in vain!!

11th January 2026 at 12:20 pm #236394Team for tomorrow:
Mamardashvili
Ramsay Lucky van Dijk Robertson
Nyoni Jones
Szoboszlai Mac Allister Ngumoha
ChiesaRamsay must play, what is the point of him being on the bench other games if we can’t trust him against Barnsley? Van Dijk for stability but I think Lucky will get the nod instead of Gomez whom I can see come in instead of van Dijk at half time if we start well.
I’d love to give Danns some game time, but seems to be too early after his hamstring, therefore Chiesa up top.
Will we see Dallo at some point? Or is he done after his two in a row red card appearances?
I’d love to give Figueroa some minutes aswell as a striker, high on confidence after scoring on Friday and has chipped in 8 in 10 games I think.
Score 3-1 with goals from Chiesa, Szobo and Jones.-

100% agree with your point. When ramsay came to us, he was highly regarded and started off quite well! Its unfortunate he had his acl injury and that set him back a few seasons! If we can put that much trust in kerkez, we should be doing the same with nyoni, rio and ramsay.
We have other youngsters coming through (joshua abe, trent kone-doherty, danns) and seeing the manager putting trust in the youth could galvanise and spur them on!

Argument to be made that he shouldnโt be starting it regardless.

12th January 2026 at 12:31 am #236483Itยดs gonna be Gakpo and I agree, I donยดt like him as a winger but I do rate him as a player, he has only had two starts up top for us in his whole career here. One in the last game for Klopp and one in his last game for Slot, he has scored a goal and it was actually a real striker goal. Those finishes donยดt get better of the knee than that, it was a good goal, instinctive goal. I wanna see more of him playing up top, I wanna see all three of our three major goal threats get into sync with each other.
Isak, Ekitike and Gakpo are all very similar players, they got pace, technical ability and height. We just need the suppliers and I suspect Salah is gonna have a point to prove when he comes back, he was holding back for the afcon, he was not taking any chances with the afcon. I hope he wins the title, he just made history as a African player, he is number three in the world to get 100 goals and assists for a international side and that is some achievement with a nation like Egypt. 65 goals and 35 assists. Only Pele and Neymar ahead of him.

12th January 2026 at 5:42 am #236484Axxording to transfermarkt, Gakpo played 18 times as a CF in 2022/23 and 17 times in 23/24 (Pl only). Those figures are likely skewed as a lot of the games were played with Diaz who likely played the no 9 but TM has Diaz on the wing.
But I do remember a lot on TT complaining in Gakpo’s first season when he played as a striker and I think even Klopp said he made a mistake with it.

Sure macattack, I’d start Wirtz as he’s never played in FA Cup before, to give him a new experience, but not play him for the full game. Also Szoboszlai, who can also play at No. 10, has been overplayed, so I’d give him a break today.

12th January 2026 at 4:49 pm #236536Definitely want to see Ramsay being given a start tonight. He was considered such a bright young talent when we bought him and then, for a variety of reasons has just spiralled down to a level where he is not currently in the reckoning. I recall that he started in that debacle of a game against Palace in the League Cup and, although nobody covered themselves in glory that night, as I remember, he did reasonably OK and a lot better then a whole host of others. Whether he didn’t get loaned out this season because a.) nobody wanted him or b.) Slot actually wanted to keep him as a squad player – we may never know the truth; but with our current dearth of dedicated RBs, I’d like to see him stake a claim tonight for perhaps a start in a PL game – or at least get on for the last 30 minutes. Mind you, we have got Slot as the Manager, who has a very small and select group of trusted players which it is, seemingly, extremely difficult to break into !
