Let’s face it, physically he has declined sharply over last 4 years and he has received a lot of criticism for failing to be the player he was.
Now he is retired we can just remember how good he was, in his prime almost unplayable.
Was a revelation at spurs, fantastic at real for a good few years winning everything, and most importantly as a Welshman myself he was the leader in the greatest team we ever had. Will never forget euro 2016 and our run to semi finals.
Arguably Wales greatest player.
Retires a legend in my eyes despite his rapid decline at end of career and retiring earlier than he would have hoped.

In his pomp he was a truly great player he’s had an amazingly successful career sadly though he’s a shadow of the player he was right decision imo.

Agreed Steve! Good player but overrated. Full of pace and power and had some great YouTube moments but wasn’t particularly skillful. Was way too happy picking up his payslip for his last few years at Madrid to care about actually playing football. The last few years he seemed to only care about playing for Wales and playing Golf.

While he did score some technically wonderful goals it was his sheer pace that made him a top player, as soon as it went he wasn’t anywhere near the same.
In his prime though any team would have greatly benefited from him.
Most players would give away their kidneys for half of what bale has achieved and he basically retired 4 years ago!

Just been watching Sky Sports News and Dawson said he was on par with Messi and Ronaldo during his prime. Quality player……but nowhere near their level.
Greatest British player of all time will be debatable…….Rooney was better than him in his prime imo, along with Charlton, Gerrard and Gazza.

Bit misleading these Lucky.
Yes, he got 3 more goals for Real than R9, but it took him an extra 71 games to get those 3 more goals.
Yes, he got 15 more assists (67 vs 52) for Real than Beckham but, again, it took him an extra 99 games to get those extra 15 assists.
You can’t knock his achievements at all. Won the lot. Just think his attitude stank in his latter Madrid years. Pulling faces on the bench, falling asleep on the bench etc. Also think his game was very limited. He was blessed with pace but it’s clear there was very little to his game beyond that once his pace went.

I would have had bale in the top 3/5 players in the world at his peak. Id have him up there behind messi and ronaldo but she’d of neymar.

They were not meant to be misleading at all ed, if the intent was to suggest he is a better crosser of ball than Beckham or a better striker than ronaldo they would be, we all know better than that though. If you would listen to people like stevo it’s like he did nothing at real and that’s why these stats are relevant.
“He was blessed with pace but it’s clear there was very little to his game beyond that once his pace went.” He could strike a ball too ed, what you call simply “you tube moments” are actually world class goals scored at very highest level and utd would have been blessed to have had him in his peak imo.
I do get the bias towards God given technical ability over God given physical ability in football though and in theory the best players shouldn’t need pace…but players are the aggregate of their technical and physical attributes and bale’s overall was head and shoulders above pretty much any other winger in the world when he was in his prime.

Extremely talented and more than just pace. Won a lot but I feel will never be spoken about as one of the greats. He had the talent to be just not the mindset. Very far from being a top, top pro.
