Exactly what RedEngineer said: yesterday’s game was a near mirror copy of last year’s Arsenal game, the only difference is that we scored a free kick last time and got the draw. We had some huge chances last year against them and should have won that one too. Like I said, we tend to play well against Arsenal even in our low days and also, we haven’t really changed from last year (just off of yesterday).
As someone else mentioned, it’s the games against the “smaller” teams that will really tell us but, if we don’t get a serious goalkeeper in, we’re gonna struggle.

We have a bit better squad depth this season, with many players vying for a position. We’ve also gotten rid of bad apples and brought in some good ones.
Yesterday I saw United players who weren’t bullied or physically outmatched, but settled in most instances to be fitter and stronger than the Arsenal players. We also didn’t capitulate after the goal and fought until the final whistle. This is what competition for places breeds. Personally I’m going to remain hopeful for the season, until proven otherwise.
The one weakness I think is Amorim’s handling of Bruno, but I understand why he does it

Anyone with a bit of footballing nous would have known that the three biggest priority positions to strengthen this summer were in goal, central midfield and striker but Amorim’s obsession with filling the squad with number ten’s has resulted in 130 million quid spent on that position leaving us short of cash and time to find a goalkeeper and a central midfielder that are going to be good enough to fundamentally improve the team.
At the moment we are struggling like fuck to offload Antony, Garnacho, Sancho and even Hojlund to bring in some much needed revenue, and when you see how other clubs are doing their business it only further underlines just how fucking clueless our lot are from top to bottom. A glaring example of which struck me the other day, when Bournemouth managed to offload a player I’d never even heard of in Dango Ouattara to Brentford for a total of 42 million quid when his record of 11 goals in a total of 88 appearances can hardly be described as average, never mind anything close to good.
If that would have been us selling a player like that we would have happily settled for a Tesco meal deal and a bag of spanners, simple as that._____________________________

I liked the ref yesterday, he let many tackles go and the game flowed more, refreshing in this day and age of pussy football. We just couldn’t catch a break, in the box the ball just wasn’t fucking falling for us, Cunha is clever, his movement is intelligent as anything, Ødegaard gave Fernandes a footballing lesson.
What are your views on Mbeumo’s rough and ruggid beard?

Blacky – If you’d have watched the game yesterday you’d see that we didn’t get over run in midfield the way all the geniuses on here have been predicting! De Ligt stepped into midfield amazingly well and was also a colossus at the back. Might need to revisit your opinion on him if he continues to play like that!
What was needed in the transfer market is exactly what they’ve gone and done, energy and excitement in forward players. Cunha almost scored 2 unreal goals and Mbeumo is going to be really dangerous this season as well. Once Sesko gets up to speed it will be one hell of a front three – a big upgrade on the Hojlund, Garnacho and Zirkzee “axis” from last season!!
If Amorim’s system continues to dominate in midfield the way it did yesterday then the “need for legs in the middle” becomes irrelevant. Don’t forget it was Rice, Zubamendi and Odegaard that were outfought by Casemiro and Bruno – something i don’t think anyone would have expected. It does look like Ugarte isn’t the one and he doesn’t fancy Mainoo at all either. So i’m sure he is looking at midfield options but its not as important as goal keeper.We were ahead in every metric of that game yesterday 61% possession, 22 hots to their 9, 36 touches in the box compared to their 20. We hit the post, even the xG was 1.59 vs 1.05 – the difference was Raya, man of the match. So we definitely need a goal keeper because anyone else in goal yesterday (even Onana!!) and we don’t lose the game – simple as that!

happy my old son. I agree with everything you said! to compare yesterday to a decent 20 min spell against arsenal or liverpool last season is a bit ridiculous. glad you saw what I saw. I do still worry about our midfield but at least we have fixed important things with the right people. let’s not forget we had a goal difference of -10 last year. we needed forwards who can do the business and I believe we brought some in.

@happy – When I said “anyone with a bit of footballing nous” you should immediately have realised that you were not included in that group, as your response clearly demonstrated. To suggest that we needed yet more players to play in behind the front man in preference to finding a goalkeeper that actually has two functioning hands and a midfielder who has two legs that aren’t set in concrete is laughable in the extreme as is your assessment of yesterday’s game. Speaking of which, I’ve yet to hear of all these golden chances we created with all this domination, which is something we actually managed to do with ease only a few months ago against the same opposition and before we even thought of signing Cunha and Mbuemo.
Has it even occurred to you that after Arsenal’s early goal they probably realised that the only way we were likely to score a goal was if they left themselves wide open to a counter attack, so were more than content to let us have the ball a bit more than we likely would have done had they not been in front so early?, probably not.
Either way, it’s yet another Amorim home defeat with no goals scored which has become pretty much the norm at OT this last 12 to 18 months, and if that narrative doesn’t change pretty quickly the knives will be out for him, simple as that._____________________________

Blacky – Have a read of Danny Murphy’s analysis on the BBC, he does a good job of highlighting the positives of yesterdays game, if that was something you were ever interested in?! The last time we had that many shots against Arsenal was in 2011. Ultimately we were undone by those dirty, cheating bastards ridiculous corner routine where they basically block the goal keeper. As someone said above other angles show there were at least 2 fouls in that goal. But that goalkeeper has a history of easily being pinned in – i would have played Tom Heaton personally.
Anyway, let’s see how we get on against Fulham but certainly positive signs in yesterday’s game as the better team lost._____________________________

We need a goalkeeper and two midfielders, that’s a given. And the fact that the back three played well yesterday means exactly that, they played well yesterday. Personally, I have no confidence that Shaw, De Ligt and even Yoro are going to perform consistently well. And to be honest, Arsenal were incredibly poor going forward yesterday and, having spent more money on the very average Zubimendi, very ordinary Madueke and what on first glance appears to be a very oafish Gyokeres, they still have problems and will not win the league, again. We were better yesterday but we still lost.

@happy – We play Chelsea at home, City away and Liverpool away in the next few weeks in addition to some other tricky looking fixtures, and if we do so without strengthening those two big areas that should already have been addressed it will matter not a jot what all these number 10’s do on the day because we are still very likely to get panned.
In fact, Amorim might as well just put one of his number 10’s in goal instead because at least Mbuemo’s big fat arse would block a few shots!😂😂😂_____________________________

It just invites more annoyance. VAR is grand for offside calls, but shouldn’t be used to anything else. Take the penalty against us at West Ham last season for example. That kind of bollocks cost clubs and infuriates supporters. For every wrong decision, like on Sunday, there is a team that benefits and a team that loses out

Was it a foul on Sunday? Yes it was (after re-watching in slow motion, taking screenshots, etc.) however I still blame Bayindir for it, because there were two vastly superior ways to handle the situation:
1.) He could grow a pair of balls and push the fuck out of everyone in the way rather than just flap about like a salmon (same as Raya did in the 2nd half).
2.) If he felt there was a foul then he should have made a total meal of it and made it clear that he wouldn’t get anywhere near the ball; shouting out loud and falling to the floor in a heap would’ve got the referee to most likely whistle up before the ball crossed the line and saved the goal going in to some extent.Threading the middle line achieved absolutely nothing and, after the howler at Spurs last year as well Onana’s at Wolves, both should have learnt by now that it’s either 100% you’re getting it or, if someone is stopping you, you have to find a way to win the foul.

To be a bit more positive rather than my usual realistic / slightly negative outlook, I do want to give a shout out to Luke Shaw who I thought did quite well overall. I was expecting him to flop up against Saka but he used his strength really well and was a big reason that our defensive line was so good on the day (De Ligt and Yoro were both great too mind you, but I expect it from those two).
