I think Alonso was just an convenient name for the Media to get hold of and subsequently, this caught fire. Plus of course because of his affiliation with Liverpool.
You’d have a pool of candidates whether they are 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th choices. That’s the competitive market we’re in and there’s variables to consider whether they actually want the job, whether they’ll settle into another setting, wages, what say they have on players, coaching staff to think about and so on.
This takes a considerable amount of underpinning to lay the foundations and ultimately, you are taking a Risk. For Ferguson to be as successful as he was, many do forget that his first few years was actually failure.
