He’s being described as a CB /RB, which would indeed tick a couple of boxes for us as these are the positions where we are most in need of injury-free reinforcements. However, and maybe there’s no substance to this, but somehow it just doesn’t sit right with me to have a 6′ 3″ defender playing as a full back. There must be a reason that there aren’t many of these examples around in the top flights – something to do with speed off the mark / turning speed – but whatever, it can’t be optimal to play in that position. That said, I do recall Markus Babbel doing a good job for us there for a season. Anyway, presumably we’re getting him primarily for his CB duties which hopefully he can help see us through before Leoni and Jacquet are getting up to speed.

The recovery time for Leoni’s ACL has been particularly disappointing. The average these days for young and fit professional players, with the best surgical techniques and under the best medical care available is about 7 – 8 months, 9 to be on the safe side. Leoni’s return is clearly going to be well above the current average and probably at least 12 months before he plays in a competitive game. Just seems that whatever can go wrong, will go wrong for us when it comes to putting out 2 dependable CBs.

I think the story/video on Curtis Jones getting into a bit of a tizzy post-match has been blown out of proportion a bit. The only relevance it has to me is that if it was to do with him not getting passed the armband – and no other explanation has been offered – then it says that he’s not personally planning to jet off to Milan anytime soon. If he was, then why give a toss about not getting the armband for the closing minutes of a pre-season friendly? However, that’s not to say that the club may like a bid that comes our way and put pressure on him to accept it. Personally, I’d be happy to keep him as a squad player as £30 million is nothing in today’s market and other teams with top 4 ambitions seem to have much bigger inflated squads than we do at the moment.

There has been so many comments on here over the last 6 months or so basically writing off Mac Allister as not good enough / should be sold. Personally, I just don’t get any of it. He’s been with us for 3 years and for the first 2, he was up there in a very small group of players contending to be our best player over that period. OK, so last year his ‘form’ dipped a bit, but does that mean at the age of 27 (in his prime) he suddenly turned into a bad player? The much more plausible explanation is that he didn’t appear so effective because the whole team suffered a generalised downturn in form and belief. Even last season, his attitude was really good and he was often the one flying into tackles when a malaise had engulfed the rest of the players. He was also the first one in the face of Martinelli following the Conor Bradley incident.
I really hope he stays with us – recent comments appear to be supporting this – and under a new style and regime, we can see the player from 12 months ago again. Fans need to show a bit more patience on things; I know we’re in the ‘next day delivery’ era where everybody ‘wants things / wants things now’, but let’s see how things start working out in this season first.

My experience is the same as Rob and Mikey where I got sucked in by Shankly’s revised team of the early 70s where so many new bright, young players had replaced the old guard from the 60s. KK was the shining light of this revamped team and idolised by the Kop for the 6 years that he was with us. What is a bit surprising is that he was never remembered as a legend and rarely featured in anybody’s ‘best XIs’. I think the reason for this is down to who replaced him in the No. 7 shirt. I went to Kenny’s debut for us in the Charity Shield vs Man Utd at Wembley and he was such an instant hit with the fans that the “Dalglish !” chant was born in his first game and a general feeling around the stadium of “Kevin who?”. So, that was it really……Kevin was taken to our hearts when he played, but rather instantly forgotten as soon as he left.

Nil>> Yes, I just need to try harder and shut-out my long-felt prejudices against a.) England fans, b.) England players who I’ve just spent the last 9 months wanting to fail every time they cross the white line for their PL clubs and 3.) the England international set-up schedule in general that keeps messing up the Premier League.
I actually went to the World Cup in Brazil and really enjoyed the overall experience of travelling around a really interesting country and watching games and interacting with fans from lots of other countries. Yes, did the obligatory Brazil game on big screens on Copa Cobana beach !
But my most abiding memory was taking up our seats in Sao Paulo for the England v Uruguay game. The stand was a good mixture of fans from both teams and the Uruguay fans were really great. There were a couple of knuckle-draggers from Croydon sat next to us and then a row of Uruguay fans the other side of them. They asked us whether we would swap seats with them as “we don’t want to sit next to Uruguayans”. My initial reaction was yes, but then I thought “no, you racist, intolerant twats – stay where you are and suffer for 90 minutes!”. It was that type of England fans that I can’t associate with and subsequently, the Suarez-double to knock England out in the group stage gave me a bit of an inner glow.

Nil>> I credit you in finding the formula to be a Liverpool fan and then be able to flick a switch in June that allows you to be so ‘made up….YES!!!’ when the England team win in a major tournament. Over the years I’ve tried to find that formula, but it just won’t come naturally for me and I’ll watch their games and there’s always this yearning with me for them to lose and put an end to the media circus surrounding them. I get so bored in hearing ‘It’s coming home’ and seeing main News items of the type of football fans that I don’t associate myself with throwing pints of expensive lager over each other. In any other sport, I’m an ardent supporter of the England / Brit team or individual, but try as I may, it just doesn’t work for me with football.

On the basis that we won’t be relying on 19 and 20 year olds to consistently partner VVD next season and the fact that Joe can’t put a run of more than 2 consecutive games together, we are still in need of an experienced CB for next season. Maybe we’ll come up with a great signing from somewhere that ticks all of the boxes, but I can’t help feeling that we’re letting 2 good options go to Spurs in Senesi and Van Hecke. Taking Senesi first: he was on a free, played under Iraola for 3 years, knows the PL and at 29 has at least 3 prime years left whilst Leoni and Jacquet get up to speed. Then Van Hecke: just 12 months left on contract so some sort of decent fee reduction can be negotiated, 26 years old, VVD’s international partner, 3 injury-free years in the PL. Surely there is/was enough boxes ticked to have taken an interest in either/both of these options – but no genuine links at all appear to have emerged.

Yes, and another example of Gakpo prioritising himself over the team was seen just over a year ago when we beat Spurs to clinch the PL title. Remember him unveiling his ‘I belong to Jesus’ under-layer just after he scored. I can’t recall him doing it before or since and it was obviously pre-meditated, but I can’t get my head around why you would want to turn such a collective team celebration into something that is ‘all about me’ !
And apart from the above ……personally, Cody, I couldn’t give a toss.

I agree with everything that Ginger has said about Alonso. His managerial record and LFC connections place him above Iraola in my opinion, but something clearly didn’t sit right with the LFC hierarchy. It could well have been the Manager vs Head Coach issue – but it’s unlikely that the true facts will ever be disclosed.
Every situation/personnel is/are different, but when you look at promising young managers moving from the Brighton / Brentford / Bournemouth collection of clubs up to the ‘bigger’ outfits e.g. Potter and Frank, things very quickly fell apart on the big stage. You can’t necessarily assume that the same will occur with Iraola, but there is some concerning evidence on that score.

Dominic King (Liverpool correspondent) said that Liverpool were never in for Xabi Alonso so, in their eyes, they haven’t slipped up by getting their timings wrong with Slot’s sacking. The other key point is that the plan to appoint Etienne Reijnen was genuine and that he’d already done his good-byes at Feyenoord hence implying that the intention, even as late as Thursday of this week, was to retain Slot. However, something (currently unknown) occurred on Friday to reverse everything.

Re: Songman’s post from yesterday>> OK, we can ignore the Shankly / Slot comparisons as it we’re talking about different times and different pressures. However, there is a lot of validity to the 5 points that were made after that.
Most people are behind the idea of Iraola and yes, his playing style is much more akin to heavy metal as everyone (players and fans) has been calling for so all sounds good in that respect. However, just watched The Sunday Supplement and the caveat being made is that it was easier to make that level of intensity work with Bournemouth’s fixture schedule last season, but a big step up when there is a hard midweek game nearly every week when you’ve got Champions League to factor in as well.

Do I want Slot as Manager come August? Definitely not. However, I think whatever he did post-game yesterday would be a ‘damned if he did / damned if he didn’t’ scenario. If he’d walked around applauding the stands himself, I’m sure there would be have been some sort of significant negative vibes against him from some which would have soured the event as a farewell / thank you to the club legends that are definitely going and maybe also a number of undisclosed loyal servants that we won’t see again. Maybe keeping himself out of the limelight was a wise and pragmatic decision for all.

No….. I never had Vlad’s strike down as being deflected and have just done a Youtube freeze-frame re-run of it and still convinced that it was a clean path through to Dida. Admittedly it was close to Baros, but he did well to get his hip and then hand out of the way. However, if it had been played today, I’m sure that VAR would have been all over it like a rash for 3 minutes. That said, there’s more chance that they could have found Baros off-side than a fingernail touch on the ball.
