C/Man, it’s understandable mate that most of us would be thinking the same for the welfare of our players of our respective clubs.
On a slight tangent and having had the morning conversation with my dear 60 year old colleague (she knows a thing or two), at work, on selection of players, she made a point of picking players that actually want to play for the 3 Lions.
Hopefully we get through this one tonight and seal the qualification. After that, Southgate needs to rethink on his future player selections.

Mr Pagan, I honestly don’t know where you’re getting this 75% from?
I’m alluding anyway more towards players bought from abroad. I mentioned Torben Piechnik last night to cite him as an example of how many duds Liverpool had purchased. I may well be a Liverpool supporter, but I will happily and openly acknowledge this.
Nurturing somebody from the academy or investing in somebody paying a so-called high price might have been a better investment.
History has shown though, nothing is exact science in a player working out wherever he’s from.
You mention talent. There are plenty out there heaven knows with potential and talent. The point is, some of them will probably not try as hard knowing they are likely to be noticed only if they are playing for a so-called ‘big club’.

Mr Pagan, it’s all very well reasoning with this type of nuance which benefited your club but where does that leave our national team in terms of nurturing those coming through the academy?
I’m not interested in singling out ‘A’ club, as Arsenal too went down ‘this road’.
My whole purpose was exploring the past to understand the present as to how we got to where we are now??
I am glad all that nonsense with the ‘Golden Generation’ has disappeared. Southgate is a Good Decent Guy. I am fed up though in seeing the same players or players chosen from the same handful of clubs and others not getting a look-in which is what this should be about – an opportunity for EVERYONE.

C/Man, that’s true and I wholeheartedly agree.
It’s frustration essentially not having a Weekend of Domestic Football.

Mr Pagan, ‘The Foreign Legion’ was a phrase used in the early, sort of mid 1990s. Dimitri Kharine??
1994-5-6-7 had a more foreign Chelsea players. I remember probably a small minority in Gavin Peacock, Eddie Newton, Frank Sinclair, et al. It’s certainly not an intention to criticise and ‘pull up’. It’s something I experienced.
Chelsea and Arsenal too started this ‘trend’.

Mikus, that part of the culture unfortunately changed from early mid 90s when more Foreigners were enlisted and for the sake of it. From our own club POV and Souness, Torben Piechnik 1992.
Having said that though, that didn’t matter as we had English Players.
Chelsea seemed to have gone down the avenue in investing in more Foreign Players, for their own and that’s their port of call.
I think we just then found our way through a cluster of players through a combination of CONVENIENCE and QUALITY.
Beckham I hated him and only got his place in the England squad because of Jamie Redknapp’s injury problems. Managers just conveniently picked Manchester United Players.
I think ESSENTIALLY, this HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE PROBLEM.

From the evidence of this thread, I can see, or sense point blank words:
“Mason Mount” Lots of times, followed by Frank Lampard, followed by Chelsea.
It’s no wonder there’s very little ACTUAL objectivity.
Doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

Mav, I think some of them are just selected by default mate lol 😀
You are right about Hendo as much as I love him as my own 🙂

Personally, it seems the selections are going by players being picked from your usual prem clubs.
Fans also lean towards their own and dont think outside the box (pardon the punn).
Couldn’t players from Championship clubs be given a chance?
Even players from other prem clubs, say for example Jack Grealish.
Henderson not good enough for me unless he’s surrounded by better players.

C/Man, agree with everything you say mate. We’re probably beating ourselves up for nowt. 4-2-3-1. Away from Home or not, you get the feeling all day long we sold ourselves short.

The Cinema would probably give you a Refund and throw-in something extra 🙂 Nandos! 😀
Southgate perhaps would be suited in the Domestic – the man is wasted lol!
