Threeps, I’m referring to the article I posted from the Espn where it states:

The Premier League said before the season began that it would continue with its high bar over interventions, doubling down on its policy of last season, and it’s situations such as this where it’s tested to its limit. There wasn’t a single VAR overturn across the opening weekend, when the average is usually just under one every three games; that probably tells its own story.

In the German Bundesliga, they are going the other way. Rather than having such a high bar, they have instructed the VAR to tell the referee to “have another look” at situations where they may change their mind if they watch it again. In the Premier League, the pitchside monitor is essentially there for a referee to confirm an overturn. The official still retains the right to reject it, but it didn’t happen once last season.

Common sense from the Utd board Brian? 😁 Definitely not that! This was without question a matter of fan pressure and rightly so. The backlash from that signing would have been immense, considering some of the things he has been accused of in the past.

More here. Wouldn’t be surprised to see this change to be in line with the Bundesliga when the opportunity arises

When you have such a high bar, the VAR is effectively looking for reasons to support the referee, rather than assessing an incident on its merits. It’s why this penalty wasn’t given, and why other incidents won’t get punished at times. This high bar for “clear and obvious” removes much of the VAR’s own subjectivity to advise a review, and is why supporters get so frustrated.

Have a read of this Adlab. Explains it perfectly re the pen. It’s not that the VAR agrees it wasn’t a pen, it’s that they don’t deem it a “clear and obvious error”. Huge difference and a big flaw in how VAR works. I’m not sure what the argument is for this way to operate VAR. I assume they’re concerned about undermining the onfield ref and making that person redundant, effectively allowing games to be ref’d by VAR completely.

    https://www.espn.com/soccer/english-premier-league/story/4714389/the-var-review-welbeck-penalty-at-man-unitedmctominay-red-cardvirgil-van-dijk-foul

The referee, Paul Tierney, may not have seen the nature of Martinez’s challenge. But the VAR, John Brooks, decided Tierney had made no “clear and obvious error” not to award a penalty.

Interesting that the Bundesliga is going the other way though. Will be interesting to follow.

It was definitely a pen, as I think everyone agrees with, Adlab. Unfortunately, the bar is set very high for VAR to overrule decisions. It’s a flaw with the current setup and needs looking at. No idea why you fear the worst though. City did pretty well out of VAR last season. Why on earth we’re still talking about a decision that had no effect on the result is a bit baffling though.

Did anyone see this where Klopp was complaining about a dry pitch?! 😄. Perfect response from Fulham

No they were pretty terrible Sean 😁. Thankfully no bearing on the result. Brighton deserved all 3 points.

He’s just a shit ref Sean 😄. Given plenty of dodgy decisions against us over the years. Utd had an awful season last season for dodgy decisions. I think Liverpool and City topped the league for benefitting from VAR decisions last season. We were due some dodgy decisions in our favour albeit I’d much rather have them when it means something to the result!

Besides Sean, you needn’t worry about the next match. Paul Tierney is one of the “best” refs for Liverpool as far as win % goes, proving he’s a shit double agent if he’s supposed to be a Utd fan in disguise 😄

Oh I don’t for a minute think he’s too nice Mikus. I’ve been reading a lot about him and there are no suggestions he’s too nice. His blunt response to those who left the Vallecano match late, including Ronaldo, was evidence of that. “Totally unacceptable” he said and then dropped him for the next game. I do, though, think he’s the type of manager who needs a structure to succeed. In hindsight (seeing very little has changed in the structure) Conte probably would have got more out of this squad. Ten Hag is a long term builder of squads and clubs. Conte is a quick fix, win, move on kind of manager.

Far too early to judge the appointment of Ten Hag yet anyway.

Was a clear pen Adlab as I said yesterday. One of those that is never getting overturned though the way VAR is at the moment.

Rabiot I don’t rate at all. Another last minute panic buy because we spent too long pursuing the likes of De Jong who was never coming.

Var did look at it I believe Adlab but it was not deemed a clear and obvious error. That rule needs changing. It shouldn’t need to be considered an obvious error for VAR to overrule it. Fortunately, it had no effect on the result.

Foxy, I have a feeling Leicester will struggle this season and may even get dragged into a relegation scrap. Rodgers’ stock has fallen massively over the last year or so. The amount of time Leicester spent in the top 4 for 2 straight seasons only to collapse at the final hurdle was very worrying.

I’m torn on that particular point Nine. On the surface, I agree that it’s a very risky strategy. On the other hand, I have zero faith in Utd’s scouting and transfer setup to find better targets than the ones ETH is coming up with.

In theory, I think there’s a lot of logic in bringing in players familiar with his (the Ajax) system. It’s a massive transition for Utd to start playing that way and that transition will be smoother the more familiarity there is in the side who understand his instructions. With that said, there is an enormous gulf in quality between the leagues which we’ve seen with many players coming in from that league. Even at Ajax, though, he took a good while to start to get them playing how he wanted so it will take a while at Utd too.

Given the right players, I don’t doubt his ability to eventually turn around the club’s fortunes and getting them playing good, entertaining football. What I doubt is Utd’s ability to provide the funds needed to give him the players to do that as well as the appetite and patience within the club to ride the inevitable stormy period during the transition. As soon as CL looks difficult to achieve and the likes of Poch are still on the market, their commitment to ETH and his long term plan are going to be put to the test big time. I’m sure they’re already ruing not bringing in Conte who, for all his faults, is a quick fix manager.

Gj, yeah I commented on here yesterday about the Arnautovic rumours. Absolutely ridiculous. As are the Rabiot reports from David Ornstein this morning. Just bizarre that we’ve known about Ten Hag coming in since about May yet here we are making panic buys. When (not if) we inevitably end up without De Jong, we’re going to become an even bigger laughing stock than we were under Ole. I thought the Fabregas and Sancho sagas were bad but this De Jong business is something g else 😂.

I don’t even know what to say any more. The club is finished at the highest level until it’s sold. I’ve been a big advocate of Ten Hag and, whilst I think the reaction from the media is way overboard and a tad premature, I always maintained that I only wanted Ten Hag if the structure above him was good enough. Ideally Van der Sar and Ten Hag coming in together. What we’re seeing now is that we’ve learnt nothing from the Woodward era and continue to employ suits to lead the footballing side of the business with little or no football knowledge or experience. It’s a sad state of affairs and I genuinely think things are going to get much worse before they get better.

Brentford is no easy game next up for Ten Hag either. Following that is Liverpool. We could conceivably start with 3 defeats before going to Southampton then the pressure will be on very early.

The match going fans are very loyal Steve and they’re the ones that matter. They’ll give him time. Of that I have no doubt. As long as he doesn’t do a Frank De Boer, in which case Richard Arnold will undoubtedly be straight on the phone to Poch.

After Odion Ighalo, Cavani & Ronaldo, Utd are set to yet again show their sublime forward thinking by snapping up 33yr old Marko Arnautovic 😂. Couldn’t make it up.

That’s precisely it Sean. You don’t end the season playing as bad as we did and then suddenly become a Dutch total football passing side overnight. Thankfully, most fans are well aware of that fact and will give him time, so long as there are signs of progress.

McFred are OK Sean for an Ole team. Win the ball and release it for the quick counter attack but Ten Hag wants to control possession. They’re just not good enough on the ball for that. You can get away with one or the other but playing them as a pair is never going to work in the style he wants.

Unrelated point but it’s good that there are now some really talented English managers in the league. In Howe, Parker and Potter, there are some very impressive managers there who could all go on to bigger things.

Looked a definite pen to me. As always, the problem is it needing to be a clear and obvious error. If it’s given, there’s no way it’s overturned.

Brighton been very good. Utd picking up where they left off laat season. Massive task this for Ten Hag to win things with this Utd side. Going to take a long time to get the side playing how he wants, especially with the lack of players coming in.
