Rover i think we can just about cope with Sanchez and our defense for this season only, however next season or maybe even the next window they will have to look at those areas again and possibly another backup striker. Dont forget we still have 3 or 4 highly paid bomb squad players that nobody wants. We have to get rid of them first somehow.

11th September 2025 at 4:49 pm #226440Zizi – good summary, much aligned with the comments I have made.
We need a much better goalkeeper than Sanchez – we could easily have lost each game this season thanks to him.
Our defence is going to leak goals without Colwill, notwithstanding the problems in Goal.
And without Delap, we lack a much needed target man who can occupy multiple defenders and give space to the wingers and players like Pedro/Palmer.
Until he is back, we will see the same passing between the centre halves, passes out to the wing where our wingers get doubled up on, before cutting back and passing backwards/sideways.
Very few of our goals this season have been down to incisive attacking play and breaking teams down – lots of set pieces, a few opposition defensive errors and other slices of luck.

11th September 2025 at 6:59 pm #226453Thanks Ed and Rover for your feedback. I agree with you that this squad isn’t yet at the level of a Premier League winning team. At best, we might be able to push for a top four spot, but realistically, I can’t see us finishing ahead of Liverpool, Arsenal, or Man City. Even Spurs have transformed, replacing Levy, bringing in a young, progressive manager, and backing him with quality signings.
If we can simply improve on last season’s performance, I’d already consider that a definite success.
Cheers!_____________________________

12th September 2025 at 6:41 pm #226501I would rate outgoing as B. We were able to offload most of unwanted players. We were able to move Kepa and for a 5m fee. Madueke may become a hit at Arsenal but we made a lot of profit. Joao Felix, Nkunku even young players like Broja and Chukwuemeka were all sold. I cannot give A due to Sterling. He is the biggest earner and he is still here but is not even in the squad.
I would rate incoming as B as well. Joao Pedro so far has impressed me. Estevao is adapting quicker that expected. Delap before his injury was good as well. Essugo also looked decent before his injury. The only sour note is Gittens. He isn’t that good so far. Garnacho & Buonanotte: we haven’t seen them yet. My feeling is that Garnacho will add something positive to the team. He knows Premier League, played a lot of games for Man Utd.

14th September 2025 at 12:36 am #226569Today’s result must be placed squarely on Maresca’s shoulders. Key decisions in team selection and tactics contributed to the dropped points. You don’t leave your best players on the bench at the start, you start strong and then rotate later. Playing Fofana at right back, despite having two natural internationals in James and Gusto was questionable. Likewise, throwing Buonanotte straight into the starting 11 coming off a relegated Leicester side seems premature for a club of Chelsea’s stature. It was also puzzling to see Guiu, our only recognized striker left out entirely especially after Maresca himself confirmed he was fit and ready in his pre-match briefing. As for Gittens, the £70 million investment already looks difficult to justify, with performances falling far short of expectations. Conceding a late goal in such a manner after taking the lead is not what the Chelsea of old would have done, and it reflects a worrying lack of game management. With points already dropped at Palace and Brentford, these are exactly the kinds of fixtures we should be winning if we hope to compete seriously. As it stands, very little seems to have changed, and unless improvements are made quickly, we may need to temper our expectations for this season.

14th September 2025 at 2:38 pm #226591Zizi – I think Gittens was 50m, I don’t think we paid 70m. Even so, 50m seems on the high side given the performances so far. The only saving grace is that he is particularly young and apparently he’s rated as being ‘highly coachable’ – though that may just be some new age, Moneyball type terminology that has crept into the game.
Agree about Buonanotte – he’s not going to be a number 10 for us away agains a tough, physical and well organised side like Brentford.
All in all – that was on Maresca. 2 points dropped unnecessarily.

14th September 2025 at 7:28 pm #226705When i saw the team i already had a dread feeling and so it proved true. No such thing as an easy gsme in the EPL. Gittens and Hato dont look promising at all even though its an early stage for them. Fofana had a terrible game too. Bounanotta looks decent though. As does Garnacho though he did not mark his man for their last minute equaliser. What sbout Guiu, his the only striker available and he was not even in the squad, you can bet next week united will play like galacticos against us. Maresca must start with his strongest available team.

15th September 2025 at 12:53 am #226727Thanks Ed for the correction, I thought the fee was £55m which works out to around €70m. Hopefully you’re right about Gittens he’s still young and clearly has potential.
Blaze, you nailed it, everyone was left scratching their heads at why Maresca underestimated Brentford, and it came back to bite us badly. Some fans are comforted by the fact that we haven’t lost yet, but to put things into perspective, Man City who have lost half of their games are still just two points behind us. That says a lot about where we stand right now._____________________________

15th September 2025 at 6:32 am #226736Its still early days so we can’t really figure out much. You get the odd bizaree scoreline but generally every game in the epl is extremely difficult so you need to play your best team always unless of course there are suspect injuries. Big teams like Liverpool, Arsenal and even Spurs have had luck run their way too with their last minute suspect wins. Personally dont believe we good enough to sustain a top 3 finish. We will end up fighting for 4th or 5th thats the best we can hope for.
