23rd September 2025 at 9:51 pm #227233Chiesa has been exceptional – would be delighted for him if he gets a proper chance this year.

23rd September 2025 at 9:54 pm #227236Ekitike is a better striker than Isak, I’ve always said it. And a crowd favourite to boot.
He loves a bit of the drama though π€£
Slot will lay into him, and he’ll learn his lesson.

23rd September 2025 at 9:58 pm #227237Thanks for the winner Hugo but what a bellend. Now he’ll miss the Palace game where likely he would have started ahead of a not quite fit Isak.

23rd September 2025 at 10:00 pm #227238Chiesa could start at No.9 on Saturday Rob, or come on for Isak, squad depth

23rd September 2025 at 10:06 pm #227239Yes likely but Ekitike’s guile and height would’ve been a useful tool against an always well drilled Palace team and away from home.

23rd September 2025 at 10:24 pm #227242Hope Leoni’s OK. You know how quickly our defensive dept often gets depleted!

23rd September 2025 at 11:47 pm #227243Boom!
Arne Slot on Hugo Ekitike’s red card:
βIt was needless and stupid. I’m old-fashioned. I’m 47. If I had scored a goal like this, I would have turned to Federico Chiesa and said: ‘This is all about you.'”

24th September 2025 at 8:24 am #227244Iβm not that worried an about the red card and love the passion from Eteke. The first booking was frustration from poor refereeing (he has not been protected at all) and the second just passion. Keep it going!!

24th September 2025 at 8:31 am #227245Ah plastic, its so silly. Really is but he is young
If isak not fully fit give chiesa a start. He is looking very sharp
Also id have chiesa on bench going forward instead of rio. He can play all across the front 3. Rio so young and raw. Give chiesa the chance but i just dont think slot rates him at all

24th September 2025 at 9:07 am #227246Fully agree Sean. Rio will still get minutes off the bench in cup games, no need to rush him. Chiesa, whilst doesn’t have the explosive pace he used to, still oozes quality.
Ekitike was stupid but he will learn. Even without a red the celebration was a little cringe anyway. Slot was right, he should have turned to Chiesa and thanked him. Not sure why he was holding his shirt up to the crowd, like a “remember me” thing. Yes we also have Isak but Ekitike is very popular with the fans and rightly so, so I don’t get what he was trying to say.
Leoni was good, real shame about the injury. Very composed.
Gomez was pretty awful, think he played 4 or 5 passes to midfield that immediately put them in trouble, one should have led to a goal just before Isak scored. I know we like to draw the press but you can’t play a dangerous ball to Endo or Jones like you would to Gravenberch or MacAllister, they just aren’t the same level when it comes to press resistance or creating space for themselves.

24th September 2025 at 9:40 am #227247Ekitike has apologised on Instagram, and rightly so. He won’t make such a stupid mistake again.
To be honest, I think he started getting big-headed after the fans starting singing that iconic Black Lace song about him on Saturday. Yesterday he was celebrating himself, instead of the team, and playing to the crowd. Very selfish, and not the Liverpool way.
I still think he’s a better striker than Isak though, may the competition begin to see who’s better, with Liverpool benefiting greatly, whatever the outcome.

Isak looked fit to me, I’d start him on Saturday, and replace him with Chiesa for about 30 min, if all is ging well, of course.

24th September 2025 at 11:07 am #227252Ye threeps gomez has games in him like last night. Just not sharp enough maybe through lack of games
If gakpo continues the way he had been then id love chiesa to get a go on the left

24th September 2025 at 2:04 pm #227254Threeps, this may answer your very valid question of Ekitike’s shirt removal. Makes sense.
Southampton manager Will Still on Hugo Ekitike:
“He’s a funny lad. We caught up before the game, and he said he’d come on and score and then give me a shirt and bugger off, which is exactly what he’s done…”
“Fair play to him. We sold him to PSG for Β£50M, so we knew he’d got a bit about him and he’d scored a lot of goals for us as well. He’s a constant threat, and he’s incredibly annoying to play against.”

24th September 2025 at 2:05 pm #227255Sean, Gomez just needs to focus entirely on defending and nothing else. Said for years that possession usually ends for us when he has the ball.

24th September 2025 at 2:38 pm #227257It’s not just Gomez’s fault, the likes of Endo are not that good at receiving the ball in such dangerous situations. There’s advantages to make these passes but it needs the right players to make it work. It’s probably as much a tactical issue as an Endo’s issue as a Gomez one.
Probably why Endo doesn’t play as much as, from a purely defensive point of view, you’d think he should.
