Fast and Furious!…..come the games and onto the League Cup and a great opportunity to rest and rotate.
Mixed bag of results against Southampton in this tournament winning 50% of the 10 games we’ve played against them. Remember this fixture fondly having travelled all the way from the north to the south back in ’87 only to see Paul Walsh get sent off a minute into the second half and then us defending for our lives to get back to Anfield without conceding which is what we did. We went onto beat them 3-0 at home the following month in the second leg of the semi-final. But, alas, all in vain as Arsenal beat us 2-1 in the Final.
The last time we played Soton in this competition was only last season in the 5th round winning 2-1 at St Mary’s courtesy of quick-fire strikes from Nunez and Elliott.
Southampton are struggling in the league lying 3rd from bottom with only 1 win in their opening 6 games.
As I said, a great opportunity here to throw in those getting up to full match speed and rest the core group so, here goes with all 9 players on the bench yesterday starting….
Mama, Frimpong, Gomez, Leoni, Robbo, Endo, Jones, Wirtz, Rio, Isak and Chiesa.
Liverpool 2 Soton 1

21st September 2025 at 8:29 pm #227186I Love the League Cup and am excited about the new crop of players we’re potentially able to see from the depth of our squad and how they fare.
Hope we treat this competition seriously and professionally and win it in 90 mins

22nd September 2025 at 3:07 am #227195Sorry rob that lineup needs to be tinkeredβ¦
vvd will most likely play, just to help leoni settle and gain confidence. Salah might also start with macalister in midfield.
We dont want to end up with last seasons Plymouth argyle result. So better to have an experienced team with some fringe players looking to get match fit. Once the result is in the bag.. get on the rest of the reserve players.

22nd September 2025 at 7:10 am #227203I’d go pretty much with Rob’s team, maybe have both Bradley and Frimpong play as both need match fitness and move Chiesa to the left. Rio on the bench. Or play Wirtz left and have MacAllister in as he still needs to find his match fitness and rhythm too.
As fans we all want to win everything and every game but at this stage of this competition squad utilisation is more important. If we go out, and I doubt we will with the teams proposed, it becomes far less games to play for the players, is that really a travesty at this stage? If/when we get towards thr quarters and semis then we can think about winning it and play the more senior players.
Looking forward to seeing Leoni play. Hope Wirtz can get some goal contributions just to ease any pressure on him.

22nd September 2025 at 7:18 am #227204Asian – Slot already confirmed the players who have played 3 full games recently wonβt be playing – so no VVD, Salah, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch or Konate.

23rd September 2025 at 7:23 am #227212I’ll keep it simple, rest or bench ALL of the players who started against Everton. We have to keep our top players fresh for the league game on Saturday, which is far more important.
We have the squad to do this, so let’s do it. And I tip both Wirtz and Isak to score.
Mamardashvili
Frimpong Gomez Leoni Robbo
Endo Jones
Ngumoha Wirtz Chiesa
Isak-

23rd September 2025 at 11:07 am #227216Got my boots ready! Expect a lot of very fast, uncoordinated running for about 2 minutes then knackered for the rest. But for those two minutes Isak can relax with his pressing, I’ll have him covered.

23rd September 2025 at 7:24 pm #227223Does anyone know anything (form / injury status / attitude / whereabouts) of the elusive Calvin Ramsay? He’s got a squad number and has not been loaned out – so is this because nobody will touch him or does LFC genuinely want him in the 25/26 squad? Whatever….he’s failed to make tonight’s matchday squad, so begs the question of what his future, if anything, is after being touted as a good young prospect about 3 years ago.

23rd September 2025 at 7:51 pm #227225Wise move by Slot to completely rest 8 of our first eleven for Saturday i.e. Alisson, KonatΓ©, Van Dijk, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Salah, Wirtz and Gakpo

23rd September 2025 at 8:02 pm #227226Ffs Rob I only make the bench?!
Ramsay has had a lot of injury problems but I have a feeling he just isn’t good enough. I suspect if he’s still with us it’s because he’s injured as I’d imagine the club would have tried to either sell or loan if they could.
No idea on his attitude, but it just seems a bad call of a transfer when we already had a better youngster in Bradley at the club.
