Just got back from some footy meetings in Austin, Texas and had a good long chat yesterday with Warren Barton. After the business stuff I could not resist mentioning ‘that’ game on Monday night football back in March of 1997 (he’s still irked nearly 30 years on!). I told him I was on the Kop as a 26-year-old, rejoicing, celebrating at half time leading 3-0 with goals from McManaman, Berger and Fowler but started getting twitchy when Keith Gillespie pulled one back but still confident nonetheless that we’d see the last 20 minutes or so out and get the three points. Keegan had pulled Beardsley and Lee Clarke at half time replacing them with Ferdinand and David Ginola which created a completely different dynamic for them and us to defend against.
Then, up popped the great Faustino Asprilla with an outside of the foot finish leading to the very guy I was chatting too to make it all square, toe-poking the ball through David James’ legs. Folks started pissing off out of the ground at that point but I stayed with my mate Lee thinking ‘something’ could happened and did….God came to our rescue. What a fuckin’ game! Nice fella to chat too but thought Barton was a complete twat back then which I didn’t mention of course! Some really funny stories too about his time at Wimbledon. Had me in stitches.
Anyways and coincidentally, up pops this very same fixture with us SO desperately needing three points.
We are unbeaten in our last 19 league games against this lot dating back to December of 2015 with a 2-0 loss at SJP. Our only defeat in the PL era at Anfield was back in ’94 with Rob Lee and Andy, sorry, Andrew Cole bagging the goals.
Newcastle started the year off well winning their first three league games but have only won once in their last six matches in all comps which was a CL game. No wins in the league since the 7th January. The annoying thing is if Newcastle win on Saturday (every chance) they go above us (as bad as they are but we’re not much better). Not even contemplating us where we could be Sunday night if we do drop more points and Chelsea and United win (which I expect them too).
We have to win, have too.
Who will start?
Alisson, Szobo, Konate, VVD, Kerkez, Grav, Mac, Wirtz, Gakpo, Ekitike and Mo is my guess. Don’t want to see Endo up against Gordon but don’t want to see Szobo at right back either because he doesn’t want to play there. Jones could also come in at RB. Don’t want to start Gakpo too but we really don’t have a plethora of options (after spending billions) as Rio isn’t trusted to start (remember his cameo last time out at SJP?) but Cody has only one league goal in two months.
We’re exactly 50/50 results wise after CL game, winning 4 and losing 4. Spin a coin lads!
Don’t know how our visitors will approach this as they have their second leg of the League Cup at City on Wednesday having lost the first game 2-0.
Hugely tempted for draw (2-2 written all over this) as we generally cock up after a cup game but think we’ll edge it in a high scoring win.
Liverpool 3 Newcastle 2
(btw, Warren Barton’s prediction was 2-0 Liverpool)._____________________________

30th January 2026 at 11:18 am #238061Tough opponent, but we just have to find a way to win it, and dominate the match, preferably with a clean sheet.
Don’t like seeing Szoboszlai at right-back, but our midfield should be able to cope. Jones could also play at RB also.
Now let’s do it.
Alisson
Szoboszlai Konatรฉ Van Dijk Kerkez
Gravenberch Mac Allister
Salah Wirtz Gakpo
Ekitike_____________________________

Whose fault is that then?
Only one person to blame, and that’s Richard Hughes. Buying two players for the same position of striker, and not buying a replacement for the best left-winger in the league, the highly effective and versatile Luis Diaz, will go down as one of the worst Liverpool transfer decisions in the PL era.
Even worse, is breaking the British transfer record on a highly-injury-prone player, Isak.

30th January 2026 at 3:46 pm #238075How do you back up that statement highly injury prone songman? Isak has only had one other major injury, which kept him out for three months, or 107 days. Couple of groin problems but beside that his record looks pretty clean unless you call a shoulder problem or a hand injury highly injury prone. How his rehabilitation will go now is another matter but the striker was averaging around 40 games a season for Newcastle. Which would be a problem for a highly injury prone player. I would categorize Gomez as such. Keita another but not Isak unless we fuck up his recovery. Not that he has ever had some explosive pace to him.

30th January 2026 at 6:57 pm #238080Bingo, Isak has missed nearly *60 games in the past three seasons. That’s not a small number.
*Net figure, will likely miss the rest of the season.

30th January 2026 at 7:12 pm #238082how many games has he played? Iยดm not saying he is the greatest fitness player ever but a player that played around 30 games in his first season in England, then another 40 the next couple of season is not highly injury prone. Cause a part from that one injury during his time with Newcastle, nothing has been out of the ordinary. I think he even clocked up around 45 apps in his last two seasons with Newcastle. That is overworked if anything, not highly injury prone. His record is there for all to see on transfermarkt. 107 days, the only big injury he has had, then another two occassion with a groin injury following that. Basically the only time he has been out beside now, beside some minor injury. Like a shoulder or a hand injury. Beside the injury he has had now, I followed this player before he went to Spain. Not the best fitness as proven by his last summer, I think we should not be paying that kind of money for a player that canยดt keep himself fit but I would not state that he is highly injury prone. I do that with players that average less the 30% of available game time, I call players that get about 50% of available game time injury prone. Players that average above 75% are just players, players that average about 90% of game time are rare.

30th January 2026 at 7:49 pm #238084Sean I would actually like to see a front line of Ekitike, Isak and Gakpo, we can argue about their technical attributes all we like but having those three upfront should scare anyone. They can all win headers, dribble and all of them got a end product. I might be Gakpoยดs biggest critic but itยดs only because I see a greater player in him than he allows himself to be. Three striker, all above 190 cm, capable of dribbling at pace at the opposition. That is a handful for any defense to deal with, I would worry about that potential and we have never seen them lineup together. We have not seen our strongest lineup with this squad.

30th January 2026 at 7:51 pm #238085So thats two centre forwards, both who like to drift left, and a left winger who provies zero width by being a one trick cut in pony? Doesnt look the most balanced attack I gotta say.

30th January 2026 at 7:52 pm #238086Isak leading the line with Ekitike on the left as he can do more than just cut inside, Gakpo on the right which might limit his goal scoring ability a bit but he would deliver that much more assists every season. I can criticize his left foot all day long but he still got a excellent right foot and with a little bit more bravery he would win most duals. I just want more bravery and teamwork from him, he did that against Quarabag despite not scoring, he provided width for us. That width provided us with 6 goals that evening so I canยดt complain about that performance.

30th January 2026 at 8:08 pm #238088I just think from the moment of us beating Tottenham last year to confirm our 20th, let’s be honest, it’s pretty much gone all wrong. Don’t know off the top of my head the best ‘analogy’ to apply, but it’s been Plaster Boards for Brick Works.
This is essentially all Aspects of the Club following through. Not the Easiest of Journeys.
The Isak Transfer will always render a Viewpoint the comes with a Fine line because of his Injury History. Whether chosen to Brush Over, Turn the Blind Eye, or Deem as a New Start in Hope, it’s just absolute Misfortune.
Not so much the Blame Game, but the Mindset and Commitment in how do the Club find a way out of this, Working Together. We Do Need To Sign A Right Back. That Cannot For One Be Dismissed.

30th January 2026 at 10:02 pm #238093its a make or break game for Slot, we can not settle for the draw being behind on qualifications and losing this match would mean 6 points lost in that retrospect.
I think quite a few of us could name the lineup right now if we knew what players will be available. Itยดs gonna be another forced lineup by Slot and more forced subs.
I just hope the lads have gotten the hang of it by now as we need them to be able to come in as the whole team will lose their structure, at least once during the game.
I canยดt fault Slot for some of it but he seriously needs a win, I think itยดs 5 wins in the last 18 matches in the league or somewhere near that. Itยดs relegation form.
