19th August 2026 at 1:58 pm #253379
My 30th anniversary of providing pregame stats and nonsense all starting with my first match on the 17th August 1996, Middlesbrough away. Remember the score and only Boro scorer? Bet most do. Yep, 3-3 and Fabrizio Ravenelli bagging all three after us taking the lead three times and then conceding late. That sounds familiar! Stig bagged his first goal for us; Digger and Robbie got the others. Starting XI that day: James, Babb, Bjornebye, Matteo, Wright, Barnes, McAteer, McManaman, Thomas, Collymore and Fowler. Uncle Royston and Bryan Robson were managers that day.
This fixture was a belting game last season with Rio bagging extremely late against 10 men Newcastle who thought they’d rescued a point with an 88th minute strike. Two nil up and cruising we were and expected more after Gordon got sent off, but, nope, not us. Sharing is caring! Newcastle pulled one back and then came that predictable late equaliser until Rio replaced Salah and then…bang!
Newcastle are in a bit of mess losing their manager and that pipsqueak that was always in Howe’s ear plus Gordon, Guimares and Tonali all buggaring off to pastures new (Gordon will be back within the year). They’ve also lost some experience too in Trippier and Targett. But they’ve added a few extra bodies here and there, nobody of considerable note mind. New manager bounces for both teams with Jaissle replacing EH. Jaissle BTW, is of similar ilk to Iraola, high intense pressing and aggressive attacking. Favours the 4231 as well. Should be a cracker.
Who will start for us? This won’t be far off I don’t think.
Alisson, Frimpong, Araujo, VVD, Kerkez, Grav, Szobo, Wirtz, Gakpo, Isak and Rio is my guess.
Looks lightweight to me in many places but….
Away win!

19th August 2026 at 2:21 pm #253384Newc have sold 2 of their 3 midfielders from last year
Gordons left.
Trippiers left.
Livramento out injured. We have also lost several experienced players in key positions and have not yet replaced some.
Its looking like we are gonna be over relying on some young inexperienced players and really hoping others don’t get injured or tired or lose form.
Our squad lacks strength in depth.Likely team?…
Allison
Frimpong, Araujo/Jacquet, VVD, Kerkez
Grav, Szobo
Rio, Wirtz, Gakpo
IsakGoing for the away win myself.

19th August 2026 at 2:46 pm #253386I think that be the team lads. Not sure jaquet fit enough.
That team just looks soft. We meed a physical presence beside grav but thats pointless if two midfielders are pressing far up pitch and centre backs are to far back leaving gaps everywhere
We have no one like tonali, rice, anderson, guimares, joelinton players of that calibre who are up for a scrape.
You had mo, bobby, mane, hendo, winji and many more who would turn up at any stadium for a battle. Not sure this team has that. Gakpo , grav, writz, isak , frompong. All soft as fook

19th August 2026 at 3:21 pm #253390We were quite lucky in our early games last season, letΒ΄s just see how we do in our first 5 games but I expect a 2-0 win for us actually.

19th August 2026 at 3:58 pm #253395Liverpools likely injury list for this one…
Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni. With MacA only just back and only playing 45mins in the lesser game against Como he’ll be on the bench.
Likely joining him will be Marma, Jacquet/Araujo, Tsimikas, Munoz, Nyoni, Koumas._____________________________

19th August 2026 at 4:22 pm #253397I rarely often factor in other teams’ injury issues to predict scorelines with the Spurs game last season being a perfect example. Spurs had 12 injuries. Liverpool 1 Spurs 1.
Think we’ll win at SJP tho. Decent record there.

19th August 2026 at 5:47 pm #253406Must win game to start off the season, tough opponent but we can do it, time for Wirtz and Isak to shine.
Get 3 points and ask questions later, doesn’t matter how we play, just get the job done, before our new star signings arrive.
Now let’s do it.
Alisson
Frimpong Jacquet Van Dijk Kerkez
Gravenberch Szoboszlai
Rio Wirtz Gakpo
Isak-

19th August 2026 at 8:16 pm #253418Araujo for me next to van Dijk. For now at least. Rest of the eleven quite straightforward so I think youβre spot on Rob.
Newcastle has really lost their fighting spirit with all their midfield outgoings, that coupled with Iraola being a little bit longer at the helm (counting days and hours here), Iβd say 1-2 with Isak and Gakpo scoring._____________________________

19th August 2026 at 8:26 pm #253420I do actually fancy us for Sunday and feel positive going into the game.
I don’t want us to be a model like Chelsea overloading the 11 and the Squad with players. We’re not that type of operation and don’t want us to be.
We’ve got to really put the investment in what we got and in ourselves. Let’s surprise people. Our Football’s definitely changed since the arrival of Iraola and there’s just a lot more Appetite and Flow of get up and get after.
I’ll go for a 2-1.

19th August 2026 at 8:49 pm #253422If it was Howe’s Newcastle that sit deep and rarely press, relying on fast counters then I’d play Araujo. If the new guy instills a high intensity pressing game then I’d play Jacquet. I have no idea what his style will be.
I’d keep that format for the season. Araujo has many physical strengths that are good vs quick transitions but seems a weak link when playing out from the back, making him susceptible to intelligent high pressing teams.
Does mean a lot of rotation for Virgil partner which is far from ideal for understanding between a centre back pair but I think you have to be aware of his considerable strengths and weaknesses.

19th August 2026 at 8:53 pm #253423I agree with Glen, we need Araujo for this match, he has had a much greater pre-season than Jacquet. Araujo has a lower ratio than Van Dijk getting dribbled past in the last 3-5 years. I reckon Araujo only needs someone like Van Dijk to command him around, relieve that extra pressure he felt when taking the captaincy of Barcelona. Which ultimate destroyed his career there. He is probably the closest we have seen to a defender like Matip since he retired. Different players but equally good.

19th August 2026 at 9:03 pm #253425All 3 of them in consistent integration. Doesn’t have to necessarily be every on every single game though. Lol on a light funny sort of Side; was just thinking Agger, Skrtel and Carragher. π Something somewhere in this Trio didn’t quite work out in combination π

19th August 2026 at 9:13 pm #253426Agger was the only one with real quality of them, Carra is a legend but he was a mediocre player, same goes for Skrtel. Or the vowel as we like to call him in Iceland.
I think this is closer to Van Dijk, Matip and Gomez. Except Jacquet might be bettter than Gomez but letΒ΄s not forget what a beast Joe is when fit.
Probably my favorite injury prone player of all times, the lad has broken so many bones for us, won so many titles for us. We have to put him on penalty duty in the cups this season when he plays, just in case the penalty happens.
During his actual prime we averaged 98 points a season, I was always a bit sceptic about him because I wondered what kind of leader he would turn into on the pitch but he proved to me that he could do it on his own when fit. His only default is his zero flair on the ball and no goal scoring record, there are a few assists there and his injury record.
We still have not held his testimonial yet and when was the last time we had one of those games?

19th August 2026 at 9:19 pm #253427Like I donΒ΄t think the city can say goodbye to Gomez without that testimonial game actually, where he will probably score his first goal for the club in his last game for the club.

19th August 2026 at 9:31 pm #253430I Totally get that mate. One of the most Decent Professionals I’ve seen in Liverpool Colours; just a Great Guy Gomez. Mirrors Joel Matip. Curse however, they’re Welcome Always.

19th August 2026 at 9:36 pm #253431We need new Energy for Sure. I am already confident with the 2 new guys. This will hopefully take the pressure off Van Dijk
Might be one of the seasons in this one where we tough it out, but with Spirit, Commitment, and Fun π
