Another of the so called βwonder kidsβ we signed a few years ago, Joe Hugill, on his way to mighty Kilmarnock for 30p.

3rd February 2026 at 10:39 am #238447@jm, you’ve got to speculate to accumulate. A lot of these ‘prospects’ we sign probably won’t make it. That’s a risk you take but it’s one we should be taking. I’d rather have players like this in the academy and not make it than have us buying players like this for the first team. I know many would argue we have been buying players like that for the first team but hopefully, things are changing…..

3rd February 2026 at 11:11 am #238449I canβt remember any of βem making it mate. Maybe one or other of the ones we nicked off Arsenal might. Other than that, I canβt see beyond JJ Gabriel.

3rd February 2026 at 12:06 pm #238456Most of them won’t make it being honest, if one out of every 3-4 years makes the first team you’re probably doing well as a club.

3rd February 2026 at 12:10 pm #238457Yeah, but when we get rid we get coppers or nothing, having invested a shitload over numerous years. When Chelsea and City get rid, they generally make good money. Thatβs the difference mate.

3rd February 2026 at 12:14 pm #238458There’s probably loads out of Chelsea or City that go for peanuts, we just don’t hear about them. Even City, you’d have to reckon, Β£32m for Oscar Bobb is probably a steal in the current market. OK, City have a sell-on clause but that’s only effective if he leaves Fulham……

3rd February 2026 at 12:44 pm #238461Maybe we’re just signing the wrong wonder kids and need to review the profile of player we are signing. They can’t all lose their ability once they join us.

3rd February 2026 at 6:24 pm #238493City have made +270m in 5years from selling Academy players .. thatβs an astute way of doing business and they still have some more they can sell β¦ we have definitely been signing the wrong profile for the academy plus we always over hype them and they turn out to be shite who canβt hack it..

3rd February 2026 at 7:42 pm #238509Garnacho, Greenwood, McTominay, Rashford, Elanga, Garner and Perrera will probably bring in Β£150m.

4th February 2026 at 5:56 am #238519Our kids have done extremely well in the Under 18 category over the past few years, which means they are of an equal / better quality than other clubs. I think our main issue is just not giving them game time, which is mostly due to us not having game ‘wrapped up early’ (ever).
Would like to see Ogunneye, Kone, Scanlon, Musa, Leon, Kukonki, Ibragimov, Mantato and, of course, JJ Gabriel get a few minutes at some stage soon… In a high functioning team with confidence up we may see a glimpse of a few players being potential squad players or even starters (Gabriel, Kukonki, Mantato and Kone definitely look like the business)

4th February 2026 at 6:36 am #238520Do you actually watch the u18s Sympathy? I do mate and Iβll be very surprised if any of them make it other than Gabriel. And we could fuck up with him knowing us.
Fair enough about those outgoings, even though we could have got more for Garnacho and Rashford if weβd sold them at their peak. But Pereira at 10 million, Garner at 10 million, Elanga at 15 million, and McTominay and Greenwood at 25 million apiece just about gets you Maguire.

4th February 2026 at 7:33 am #238522@jm1502 – I don’t watch the full matches no mate, so I humbly bow to your superior knowledge if you do… But I’ve watched clips of both our kids and even the players who “made it” at City or Liverpool as an example (while they were playing for their academy teams) and there isn’t a significant difference to be honest at that level – the difference mostly relates to be giving chances.

4th February 2026 at 8:48 am #238524No mate, the difference actually manifests itself when the young lads do or do not make the transition to senior level, and most of ours do not.

4th February 2026 at 9:22 am #238526How many Man City academy players make a full transition to the first team? Foden, who else has properly ‘made it’? Same at Liverpool, Curtis Jones is barely making the grade, Reece James is the only Chelsea player. The only difference is how much they are sold for, and often they sell their players to a sister club like Strasbourg, Girona. Our academy is probably more successful than any PL team in terms of players we actually produce for the first team, our downfall is the amount of money we make when we sell them on.
