We meet Galatasaray once again this season after going down 1-0 at their place courtesy of an Osimhem penalty. Despite missing a few big chances we were really piss poor that night. I remember Yilmaz milking Szobo and hope he doesn’t start at right back for this match again. We also got bullied in midfield and too many players were just not at the races. We lost Ali and Ekitike to injury too as well that night. Utter pants.
Not much joy, historically, against this lot with only 1 win in 5 and have never won here.
Galatasaray currently 4 points clear of Fenerbahce at the top of the Turkish Super Lig and have only lost 2 games in the league all season but their CL campaign has been spotty.
Our hosts have got goal contributors throughout the team but the obvious danger is Osimhen as we’ve found out in the past from the game mentioned above to his time at Napoli. Yilmaz, Sara, Sane, Icardi and Lang are others to keep an eye on.
Who will start?
Ali, Gomez, Konate, VVD, Kerkez, Grav, Mac, Szobo, Wirtz, Ekitike and Mo is my pick.
Second leg is a week on Wednesday.
Could go either way this. Galatasaray will be up for it and will want a good win knowing that their fans aren’t allowed at Anfield for that second leg.

It was a shit game, I don´t think we were that bad actually but the injuries that happened during the match offset our rhythm. We also had a off balanced first team to start with, Frimpong and Bradley were both on the bench and both got introduced later on. One of those games where game management costs us. Slot had us all over the place and kept swapping players around to accommodate others.
I´m going with the same team as your except Robbo at leftback, he has been playing more than Kerkez in the Champions League and I think that explains our form there. I think it´s around 450 minutes and 200 minutes.

Well Ramadan does not end for another 10 days, so we will face Galatasaray twice before that. That might work in our favor as I am pretty positive Galatasaray has more muslims that take part than us. Salah is gonna equal yet another record and then surpass it, this one set by none other than Carra himself, 80 games in the champions league, the most by any Liverpool player. Then no Galatasaray fans will be allowed at Anfield in the 2nd leg.

Gala has the most yellow cards in this competition.
They currently have 7 players who if they pick up a yellow in this game will miss the game at Anfield.

Usually playing an away first had its advantages when away goals counted but not any more.
Arguement to be made around the fullbacks for this game.
I’d be starting Gomez at right back for this one away from home just for some more defensive stability. Similar argument to be made for Robbo plus his experience, leadership and partnership with VVd.
Midfield also has a question mark.
Do we start with a solid midfield away from home and then bring Wirtz on later in the game when it opens up or start him from the start.
Front 3 highly likely to be Ekitike, Salah, Gakpo.My teams for this away game would be I think….

That’s quite a blow with Alisson out. Need to be real vigilante when they are on the threat. I’d be happy dragging this one out with a 0-0 and taking the tie to Anfield. Having said that, our defenders haven’t done too bad of late especially with Robbo instilling more confidence and a get-up-get-after so who knows.
Anything above a draw of course would be a boost. Obviously hope it’s not a defeat.

A game we really have to win, and should win, so let’s get down to business and do it.
I’d start Frimpong at Right-Back, though I would not be surprised if Slot deploys Szoboszlai there instead, a move which he likes, to accommodate both Wirtz and Gakpo.

No Rio should start and Szobo should actually sit one out with Frimpong starting as well, I don´t mind Szobo or Gomez starting but Rio needs to start, a part from the set pieces Szobo has not been doing that well. Mismanaged and overworked, I would be tempted to play Wirtz instead of him if Wirtz is fit but there would be no way Gakpo starts on the left for me.

A clean sheet is a must… so gomez has to start, same with robertson. Have szobo in the middle and use wirtz on the left or on the bench. Rio shouldnt start, he might get overawed by the atmosphere and players kicking lumps out of him… The last thing we want is an injury.
Contrary to player ratings and reports, i thought gakpo played well against wolves. Just needs to learn to get his hands dirty and stop being a pussy.. i mean the guys 6ft4 he should be bullying everyone around him and winning most aerial duels.
Lets not underestimate galatasray, theyve got some decent results in the champions league already… plus the 12th man atmosphere… a draw should be minimum.

Asian, that thought definitely in my mind re the Clean Sheet on the back of the Alisson set back. He’s MEGA and has been for a number of years. GK is the most important position in my eyes.
Marma obviously hasn’t played as much so I’m sure he’ll try to do well, but unfortunately, I have my doubts so I do agree being a little bit more defensive and harnessing a clean sheet.
I think Wirtz is back for us, so we will indeed be able to offer threat up top.

asian, Gakpo just lacks bravery, he never goes for those headers or tries to bully a defender. I prefer him up top than on the left, he is not as useless there. He tries to organize the press, I don´t understand why he never joins the press on the left flank though. For most of the time he is just casually jogging around sitting in space in case someone wins the ball, so he can make a run. Someone here tried to point out his heat map as proof of his workrate but he is just jogging around, sitting in space. It such a contrast to both Mane and Diaz, who worked their socks off for the ball every game.
Have you ever seen Gakpo win the ball off the last defender or even goalie like our former wingers used to do repeatedly. Mane used to press until he won possession inside the 6 yard box so many times, he just picked the ball of the goalie and scored. I will never see Gakpo do the same, Diaz used to have moments like this as well. Both of them used to win the ball at impossible angles and then deliver from those angles. Mane especially was so brave, we used to be able to just kick the ball as high as we could on that left flank and he used to bring it down with ease and dribble behind the lines to deliver a goal.
We are just boring to watch right now, we got a boring playstyle, where most of our players are being asked to underperform for the sanctity of control.
