Brutal kick off time having played just last night. No clue why this could not be a Sunday fixture. Recovery day today then match day minus one on Friday. Ridiculous.
Beaten Brighton twice this season, without too much drama, winning 2-0 in the league in December (Ekitike 2) and 3-0 in the FA Cup (Jones, Szobo, Mo).
Patchy at Brighton though having only won once in our last five visits there in the league which was four years ago.
Patchy all season form wise for them but have picked up a little lately winning three of the last four beating Brentford away (which we couldn’t do), beating Forest at home (which we couldn’t do) and then them matching the result we got at Sunderland. They only narrowly lost at home to Arsenal too in the middle of all that. Be a tough game this.
The usual culprits to watch out for of course that seem to always cause us issues in Minteh, Welbeck, Mitoma and Dunk.
Not looking at the league or who our rivals are playing as we then usually balls it up.
Who will start? After last night, has to be one or two rotations.
Ali, Frimpong, Konate, VVD, Robbo, Grav, Mac, Szobo, Gakpo, Ekitike, Mo.
If Mo isn’t fit, then stick Rio out there. If Gomez is fit then he comes in at RB and Frimp as the 11. Wirtz could start but suspect Gakpo will get the nod. Jones could come in too, maybe for Mac.
Brighton 2 Liverpool 2

19th March 2026 at 2:30 pm #241992If Slot keeps up this formation we might hit some form, there was a lot different yesterday from our usual gameplan.
It looked to me like we were playing a 442 diamond, Ekitike and Salah upfront, Gravy, Mac, Szobo and Wirtz in a really tight diamond for most of the game, Kerkez and Frimpong added some width.
We have only had a handful of games where Slot has deployed this system, we have actually played pretty decent football in most of those games but every game we have suffered injuries that disrupted the game.
You just need to compare the two fixtures and how we played, especially Salah who had one touch inside the box in the first game while hugging the line, then 12 or 13 in the 2nd leg from a more central position, where he could make his usual runs into the box.
Then that midfield box dominated the midfield, we won almost every 2nd ball, I don´t remember one counter from them where they managed to play through us.
If we revert back to our old formation with Gakpo on the left we are gonna have a hard time, if we keep this formation we might get the result we need.

19th March 2026 at 3:16 pm #241999Rob, good point, and I was thinking the possibility of an 8pm, but Sky have Leeds Brentford, and this is a TNT; I remember our Jurgen absolutely loving these haha 😀
It’s down to for me the same line up using the diamond. That Suits us perfectly in my view.
I think Mitoma is 50/50 for them.

19th March 2026 at 3:22 pm #242000Was gonna add the point of the United playing at Bournemouth Friday Night which could be tricky and they could drop points. But usually whenever we get given a gift, we throw it back in their faces and flunk every opportunity, so I think I will try and stay quiet.
We need to be able to turn up and wake up!!

19th March 2026 at 4:12 pm #242003No idea which LFC team will turn up, we could win 0-4 or lose 2-1 …..and therein lies the problem!

19th March 2026 at 5:20 pm #242006That depends on Slot who is more of a tinker manager than we have ever had, he surpasses Houllier and Benitez in that regard, his interviews remind me of them both and of Rodgers or even Hodgson.
If we revert back to the 433 formation we might struggle as we rarely threaten from open play, we might dominate possession, have more shots on goal etc. but we rarely have a good chance.
I´m wondering right now if there is any truth to this power struggle rumor with Slot and Hughes butting heads, I can see Slot wanting to move away from the tactics of Klopp or the 433 and wanting to make that 442 formation in his own style.
Cause most of the time we do not have the squad to play a 442 formation, despite most of our forwards being able to play as a front two. That´s all down to injuries and planning.
My only hope of seeing us turn results around during the clutch season is if we play the same formation as we did in our last game. I don´t even think Slot´s training methods right now are for the 433. Such is the difference in the quality of performance.

20th March 2026 at 11:06 am #242039This game is going to be a good test of whether we can keep up the same intensity,
playing style and appetite to win as on Wednesday.Whether Slot will stick to his Diamond 442 formation for this game, remains to be seen,
but Gakpo (if he starts) is a proven striker, so that will not be a problem if he goes down this route.A tough ground to play at, so we have to give 100% with no stupid mistakes, to win the game.
Now let’s win it, total focus and no complacency.
Alisson
Frimpong Konaté Van Dijk Kerkez
Gravenberch Mac Allister
Szoboszlai Wirtz Gakpo

20th March 2026 at 11:43 am #242042I’m actually thinking Rio or Chiesa in place of Mo to stick with the Diamond, but this is my problem with the guy and the likelihood of him ‘reverting to type’ because of one player out.

20th March 2026 at 5:45 pm #242060I have criticized rotation and that’s coming from the angle of when players are mis-placed out of their natural positions. I’ve never had a problem with tweaking and a change in formation as long as it’s right.
As long as we have a squad of players that are READY to step in and commit themselves then that’s good enough for me.
Looks like an outing for Marma. Smell a bit of a Vibe with training and everything else maybe a little too much for the players to be ready for a lunch time game. It’s travel and hotel today.

20th March 2026 at 6:44 pm #242064As good as Alisson is I think we may need to start looking for a new #1 next season or at least start planning his exit. Injuries have been racking up the last 2-3 years now and that hammy of his worries me and clearly it worries him as his distribution especially into zones 3 and 4 has been erratic. I don’t think he trusts it.

20th March 2026 at 10:07 pm #242111United drop points so that leaves them 6 ahead of us, but we have a game in hand.
We flunk tomorrow as we can forget about 4 5 and 6th Positions.

20th March 2026 at 10:57 pm #242131Rob I disagree, a keeper like Alison comes a long every 20 years or so, we should rather focus on getting in someone like a younger version of Kelleher. Alison got another 2-3 years in him and I have to say since he got in he has been arguably top 3 goalkeeper of the year every season. He has even now outlived his rivals in the league, he got to be classed as the number one keeper in the league, I reckon everyone would trade in their goalkeeper for him in a heartbeat except maybe City but that´s just because of bias.
Alison as a keeper has it all, there is not a single category he lacks in, distribution is up there with the best of them, one on one with the best of them, he commands the box, he is brave and never out of position. Then a leader and a role model. We can go on and on about him, I would say he is the best goalkeeper in the league since Cech. There are perhaps rivals in past seasons to compete with him but he has outlived them all and kept up his performances.
This is a professional that will know when it is time to step down, I trust him to do that, I have never been more assured about a goalkeeper in my life than him.
We broke down our squad enough last summer, we don´t need a repeat of that, if Marma is upset about lack of gametime. Then I´m sorry but he should blame his agent for that.
Then again if given time he could be a really commanding goalkeeper, that is a big lad, I call everyone above me in size a freak of nature and that is what he is. I don´t really think he was ready for the physicality of the English league when Alison went out but he needed that introduction.
When called upon again he actually did his job and got MOTM. For 30 million I actually think we got a bargain but he can only work harder in training right now. There is a big threshold from him to Alison, Marma is a contender to become world class but Alison has stayed there since before he arrived at the club.

20th March 2026 at 11:06 pm #242132“Rob I disagree….”
You disagree that we should start looking at a replacement for a keeper whose contract runs out when he’s 35???
That’s quite a strange stance.
Using others logic, he’s massively injury prone.
