Here’s a quick reminder of our 8 group phase games (still a miracle we qualified):
Liverpool v Atletico Madrid – Wednesday September 9, 8pm
LASK v Liverpool – Wednesday October 14, 5.45pm
Liverpool v Villarreal – Tuesday October 20, 8pm
Fenerbahce v Liverpool – Wednesday November 4, 5.45pm
Club Brugge v Liverpool – Wednesday November 25, 8pm
Liverpool v FC Porto – Wednesday December 9, 8pm
Internazionale v Liverpool – Tuesday January 19, 8pm
Liverpool v RC Lens – Wednesday January 27, 8pmMet Atletico in the group phase last season winning 3-2 at Anfield letting a two-goal lead slip (shock, horror!) with Llorente scoring both (shock, horror again) but Virgil rescued things late with an injury time winner.
A mixed bag against this lot home and away winning 4 out of the 9 contests (3 home and 1 away) but a bad defeat against them 6 years ago and please copy and paste the prior paragraph, yep, two up, Llorente double, but this time Morata and Madrid prevailing in ET to knock us out.
AM have made a patchy start their league campaign winning 2, drawing 1 and losing 1 including a 3-0 thrashing at Athletic Bibao yesterday.
Players to watch out for are *Lee-Kang In, Lookman, Baena and Simeone. Note: The six goals they’ve conceded in the league have all come in the second half. *Need to track this lad.
Onto Wednesday!
Who will start?
Alisson, Frimpong, Araujo, VVD, Kerkez, Grav, Mac, Wirtz, Szobo, Gakpo, Isak is my pick/guess. I think Grav will come in and get a game, Szobo as the 10, Wirtz as the 7, Gakpo 11 with Isak up top. Long shot but going for it. Subs, Jacquet for Araujo, maybe Kostas for Kerkez, Grav to come off, Szobo to drop, Wirtz the 10 with Gakpo switching and Munoz in his place. Summat like that.
Intrigued and excited to see how Iraola meshes a CL campaign with a PL campaign.
Madrid is an extremely disjointed team and can only see a home win here. Giving them a goal as they usually score against us. We also have the potential to batter ’em. I mean it when I say they’re all over shop, if we’re on our game, we’ll stuff ’em.

I hate playing these especially in spain. It so important for us and iarola that we win. Its his 1st european game as a manager. He needs ti fet off to a good start. Huge tests coming up to see how he manages the squad as he is not isrd to a really rigorous schedule
I think grav come in. Jaquet looked exhausted last ten v Ipswich.

I would rest Jacquet who is still coming back from a serious injury and play Araujo, Frimpong back at RB.
Gravenberch back in with either Wirtz or Szoboszlai missing out, and who plays does so at no as the 10. Depends on fitness.
Barcola on the bench, Gakpo and Munoz on the wings.

Good Intro Rob.
We have a combination of this game, a Prem game and a League Cup game all at Home. This is really the Vital area we need to quickly fix and put right.
We want to recreate Anfield as a Winning Place. Not for others but for us!
I still feel we are 2 experienced players short to be able to cope with multiple games of this stature. We have to try and stay as much as possible injury free and in good shape to play back to back matches.
I would imagine a little bit of rotation and reducing minutes for certain individuals which is fine. Need to continue to get these games off to a good footing and continue to assert ourselves.
I’ll go for a 1-0 narrow win as Madrid no doubt will try and frustrate us.

Yes I’d be starting Araujo here at CB as well, he’s well versed with Spanish opposition and very experienced.
The problem we’re gonna have and keep asking ourselves for the next load of games is who plays RB?
We have a league game 3 days after this so the manager and staff need to be conscious of this.

Firstly, Frimpong has not covered himself in glory while playing RB.
We’re 3 games into the Prem and we’ve already had 3 different RBs.
That indicates an issue.Secondly, when I talk about management being conscious of the 3 game turn around I’m talking about in the general sense.

Frimpong at best in my eyes his hit and miss. He will focus going forward which is all well and good, but then isn’t as disciplined in recovery.
We can be exposed and forced with our backs against the wall.
At best, Frimpong is better suited being rotated.

The two games he played no one played well especially in the back line and midfield 2.
Our next two games are at home, you’d think that will suit Frimpong better.
Should we have bought someone else? Sure j wanted Kounde, but we couldn’t buy anyone anyway non HG. So it is what it is.
We’ve already played 4 players at LW, does that mean we have a problem there too?

The options that played left wing are actual wingers.
And as you well know Iraola likes to change his wingers in game to try to unsettle the opposition defence.It’s a different scenario for Frimpong.
He’s been subbed/dropped due to poor performance.
The players having to step in are midfielders or centrebacks, this is due to a lack of RB options._____________________________

Exactly my reason, those two are both wanting to go forward. Gravenberch is a carrier, Szoboszlai is a runner, playing both is defensive madness. MacAllister will sit more but isn’t perfect for that role.
Frustrating as Gravenberch has been more disciplined before.

Players more and more these days are really quick and the strategy to adopt 2 blocks occupying the 18 yard box then just sprint on the counter is a modern day blueprint for the opposition.
1 Solution where example of a better fit for both Frimpong and Kerkez is to play higher up. They get the best of both worlds and IF they were really good at reading situations with pragmatism and composure then fans would be filled with a lot more confidence.
Their playing style too would suit better supplemented with a box-to-box or a defensive midfielder to safeguard them should they get caught out.

Agree Rob.
Need someone with bit more defensive instincts or at least curb their attacking instincts.Noticably MacA was frequently seen sat deeper than Szobo and Wirtz.

I know the champions league games are important, but I’d say the league is more important.
I would like to see Iraola rotate some players. Maybe start with nyoni in midfield, and maybe Rio on the wing.
not sure I’d want frimpong to return at right back, but choices are limited.

Yes, he may well get rested / rotated, but not because of his injury. When you’ve had an injury such as ACL, hamstring, achilles, leg break etc, then maybe it’s wise to manage their game-minutes return a bit more carefully. But a shoulder is not exactly a key stress-point in a footballer’s anatomy and I’d have thought that once he’s recovered to a point that he’s been through rehab., training and a few games, then his game-time shouldn’t be compromised by a recovered shoulder injury. If he is taken out of the firing line on this one, it’s much more likely because he’s not yet been battle-hardened to all the cynical tactics that a Simeone team will employ against you.

I agree the manager would want to make a good start tomorrow, but just need to be careful with some players. Maybe start with a strong team and then make changes after 60mins. He’s got to use the bench, even though it may lack the quality.
Probably go strong in this game and the next. Then rotate for the spurs game.
