Agree nil it’s way too much for potential. He may become good but for that price I’d expect a senior more experienced international to walk into the starting 11.
Hughes does seem to pay over the top. I know we’re pretty good with the money side but he seems a sellers dream at the moment.
I’m guessing both Konate and Gomez will be off in the summer. I would expect someone like Schlotterbeck to come in to have a handover season with VvD at LCB.

2nd February 2026 at 12:19 pm #238385Very high price for potential but I am hopeful that Konate might be convinced to sign a new contract after this buy. If the reports are true about how good he is, then he should be knocking on the France international side pretty soon. Or are we buying him to replace Ibou? It’s 15 million less than what we paid for Van Dijk.

2nd February 2026 at 12:23 pm #238386Gomez still has another year on his contract, I would not be surprised to see take the option up but his future should be in his own hands.

2nd February 2026 at 12:29 pm #238388Bingo he’s a right sided CB so not a VvD replacement.

2nd February 2026 at 1:03 pm #238393Certainly is a head-scratcher. Now we have taken ourselves beyond net spend. Should their be a change of hierarchy, he’ll then be challenged in tightening the books (should it be the case).
We’re taking ourselves to the wrong heights and that’s not really the Liverpool way. Not the right business model.
Leoni should be back in training you’d think and hope come pre-season. One or two I mentioned in Gomez and Konate will likely come to departure.
My thinking now is more towards using an example of 60 million and buying 2 30 million pound players…

2nd February 2026 at 1:03 pm #238394Actually will update that, he’s right footed but seems he has played as the central CB in a back 3/5 this season.
Gearing up for the arrival of a coach who has had success with a back 3 system? Probably not, at his age he can surely adapt to either a 2 or a 3.

2nd February 2026 at 1:04 pm #238395I don´t think he was brought to replace Van Dijk either, this is a defender for the future, Van Dijk has 18 months left on his contract. We need able bodies in as we only have two central defender that can be relied upon. I´m sure Leoni will come good eventually but he is another one for the future. I don´t expect a 20 year old defender to be a starter for us. Van Dijk, Konate, Gomez, Leoni and Jacquet. Either Gomez or Konate will probably leave if not both. I´m just wondering cause in a season or two this lad should be knocking on the france team, that might entice Konate to stay. They could develop a good relationship both for team and country. Ibou is one of the better defenders around Europe, he is just about to enter his prime and is capable of leading the defense when Van Dijk eventually retires.

2nd February 2026 at 1:15 pm #238396Konate is either a 9/10 defender or a 4/10 defender. Most of this season he’s been the latter.

2nd February 2026 at 1:28 pm #238398We also don’t know if Konates father just died suddenly or if this was on going illness for the last few months.
If I was working in another country while my father was dying at home I’m sure it would impact me._____________________________

2nd February 2026 at 1:34 pm #238399Judging by what romano and rumours kicking about, we might get upamecano from bayern! Was a monster a few years back dont know if he could handle the premier league. His moving into his prime but wages would be the issue with him… the defence needs sorting, gomez is too injury prone, konates leaving and van dijk might be gone in 2027. So thats 3 defenders needing replaced.

2nd February 2026 at 2:36 pm #238411ginger his father passed away what 2 weeks ago, it was sudden a heart attack, I think he was just arranging funerals arrangements and helping out his family. I looked it up as I was hoping he had some time with his father on his deathbed, it always nice to hear some final words from your loved ones but that was not the case.

2nd February 2026 at 2:40 pm #238412Some guys mentioning jacquets age.. when he arrives in the summer, he would be the same age as we signed konate, 21. Now konate did play second fiddle to matip.. but apparently jeremy jacquets of a higher standard. Just hope he stays injury free at liverpool and lives up to his potential!
We have signed a ndiye, leoni and now Jeremy… so we are looking good defensively for the future. Just need 1 here and now defender and that might be schlotterback or upamecano… and thats us for the defence for the time being.

2nd February 2026 at 2:49 pm #238413We must really like him, we went away from Guehi who could have been signed for 20-25 million albeit on higher wages but pulled out of that deal. 60 million is some statement signing for the future but if Konate leaves we need someone like Bastoni in. I love Gomez but I will never feel comfortable with him as a automatic starter for us.

2nd February 2026 at 3:49 pm #238422Bingo, I do subscribe to your thinking in further down the line, and the boy has obviously loads of years to offer us. Even as ‘Investment’ 60 million is a Seismic amount of dosh on one very young player. I have not seen this before.
I am at suspicion and question-marking our recruitment team in how business savvy are they? Or whether they are naive and easily taken in?
For example, were Chelsea really in for him or is this simply the agent’s classic “somebody else is also interested” tactic to just inflate the fee, at ridiculous amounts too might I add.

2nd February 2026 at 4:12 pm #238423I do not worry about player prices, the higher they are the better it is IMHO, the higher the wage bill the higher chance we have of winning trophies. It´s as simple as that so I never worry about transfer fees, that kid will hold his value while under contract and likely to double in value if signed to another contract.
I spoke some years ago about player prices reaching these kind of levels, I don´t remember anyone agreeing with me, they always correlate to the commercial rights of the league and its distribution. Like I honestly doubt there would be a big difference in % between Shearer for 15 million and Isak for 150 million. It´s just inflation.
It does look like Edwards and Hughes are mostly concerned about the long term future, not the short term, I´m happy we lost out on that Slot signing from Sunderland but I still maintain we need two senior defenders, be it Konate or Bastoni I don´t really care but Bastoni will cost around 80-90 million or something and on a huge contract. Replacing Ibou in the lineup would require investment of around 160 million. Cause I doubt Bastoni would join us on anything less than 300k, that´s 78 million over a five year contract.
I am more worried about the defense than I was about Mane, Henderson, Bobby, Fabinho or anyone else leaving. This is the biggest transition we have seen at the club, it´s the hardest one, we can not put all our eggs in the same basket and buy U21 players. We need a senior defender alongside Van Dijk until he decides to retire or leave the club. I can see him extending his contract actually but I doubt he would do it unless he got 2 seasons. Which should not be a problem, if his knees go, his name is big enough to attract any other club in the world for another season just for the experience he has.
I have a feeling they are making a side for someone else, I doubt it will be Alonso, I think it will be Nagelsmann or Luis Enrique. If it´s the latter it would explain Slot´s obsession with PSG. There is no amount of money that will keep Enrique with PSG, he has openly stated that. He wants to manage in the premier league because of the passion of the fans.
