I have a suspicion that the new Chelsea owner wants a marquee signing after the PR disaster of seeing them lose the likes of Rudiger and Christensen as well as seeing the Raphinha and Kounde deals hijacked at the last minute.
Going and getting someone like De Jong, who clearly wants CL football, goes some way to clawing back some credit amongst the fans with the new owners eager to get off on a good footing in their first transfer window.
